BOLT ONS!! Q & A

Hey guys, I'm sure you can see our Big Turbo thread about questions you might have and ideas you want to run past us. We thought that since more people do bolt-ons than anything else, it would be a good idea to get any questions about them answered as well. Ask us about intakes, inlet pipes, downpipes, etc. You can ask about fitment, design, performance, warranty, or anything else. Ask away!

By the way, we carry most everything that can be put on the Mazdaspeed cars. Even if we don't, we'll still answer questions.

EdgeAutosport.com 09-28-2011 11:03 AM

Keep in mind guys we will do package deals on these parts if you want to buy more then 1 thing at a time!

I have a question about intakes, inlet pipes, downpipes, etc.

How is the fitment, design, performance, warranty, or anything else?

I keed I keed. I want a BT but I am taking my hard earned money from work to finish my degree and cannot afford right now... how about BT for good grades????

I'll have to check out your website.... any new products?

DerrMS3 09-28-2011 11:29 AM

Do you recommend upgrading to urethane exhaust hangers when going with a cp-e dp and ultimate racing cbe combo? Do these parts come with the correct gaskets to hook them up or are other parts needed? Thanks!

Ive run the stock hangers for as long as ive known and never had a problem. Also that cpe should just mount straight to the UR CBE without a hitch.

I would definitely run stock hangers. Rubber = less noise, vibration, harshness. Bad for motor mounts, good for hanging exhaust on a street car. :) No other parts are necessary. You reuse the turbo gasket and the CPE DP is made with a large beaded end so it replaces the donut gasket from the factory and just hooks right up to an aftermarket 3" exhaust.

Any of the inlet pipes create the louder whoosh. I've actually never been in one with a CAI so that might be louder.

what? you're not just gonna tell people to search?

2011speed 09-28-2011 03:06 PM

if i wanna stick to stock ride height, which offset should i go with on a 18x8.5 inch wheel? also if i wanna go with a lil bit higher profile than stock to close up the wheel gap a bit.

LOL this is the place where you won't get bashed for asking questions. We want to help people. Just because someone has done it before, doesn't mean the newest MS3/6 owner knows all about the car. Thanks for that question though, sheds some light on what we're doing here.

I would go with anywhere between a +35 and +45 offset for a 8.5 inch wheel, possibly even lower than 35 depending on how aggressive you want it to look. The GenPu (2010+) MS3's have been blessed with much bigger wheel wells than the Gen1. Even though you could do that on a Gen1, you'd be pushing it more than on a Gen2. It just depends on how you want it to look. You can put up to a 245 width tire on an 8.5 inch wheel. If you did the same 40 series on that width it would raise the tire height 8mm. That's quite a bit because it's really 16mm of overall additional diameter. If you did a 245/35 tire, it would raise it 5.75mm from stock appearance tires (+11.5mm overall diameter). You can do a 235/40 and it would raise it 4mm on each side from stock. Remember though that all tires have different internal dimensions so it's not quite as straightforward as that but you can bet on that being pretty close to those dimensions with about any tire.

Ok a little too late for me to ask but want a answer, is my turboxs flick too big? I haven't noticed lag and for the price I got it new there's no way its overkill. Thanks

Do you guys carry a cast exhaust manifold for use with the stock turbo or iwg gtx?

people usually run the stock mani or the steedspeed manifold. At the moment we are very limited to choices of manifolds but hopefully that will change soon.

R3L3NTL3S 09-30-2011 01:54 PM

I was just wondering because I'm thinking about going with a UR CBE instead of my Magnaflow. Then I thought about getting an exhaust manifold instead and replacing the manifold and turbo (GTX3071) at the same time without going externally gated.

Have the MSCAI already. I know a good portion of this crap already, just want to memorialize it so others can learn how to tip-toe around in Cali.

I Haz questions:

1. What's the normal oil temp when car is fully warmed up?
2. What's the normal oil pressure at idle?

Jw for when I get those gauges I know what to expect. Thanks

I think I got the answer to #1 which is 180-220 max....

but IDK what the pressure supposed to be at idle. I know it will fluctuate as you rev up.

Ya I really don't know. I would guess that it's about 40-50psi at higher rpms but that's just a guess. I'd just be concerned if it doesn't raise at speed or if it drops really low and stays there. That's what you need to watch if you're monitoring it.

I currently have a testpipe but want to run a catless long downpipe is that bad for the k04 considering backpressure? And will I need internals with the DP?

I don't have an AP yet and plan to just to moniter and tune a little but for now I have nothing to monitor with yet.....

My current mods are in the sig thanks

I'd suggest getting internals and an AP first, seeing where your car is at, then getting a downpipe. As for backpressure, the stock cats do nothing but restrict the turbo, making it less efficient. Make sure you get denso itv22's, and maybe run a thicker oil, just to ward off any smoking from the turbo

Do either the CP-E or UR FMIC require cutting any part of the front bumper cover or undertray?

Those are my 2 choices right now due to the larger core and included bumper beams.

I know they don't require cutting the front bumper and I know the CPE doesn't require you to cut any part of the undertray. The UR kit should be the same for the undertray, no cutting. But I will shoot UR an email and find out.

Okay, no cutting of either for both.

Synthetic 5w-30 is what's recommended by the factory. That should work fine but if it's smoking, it's not an oil issue. A different viscosity might help with the issue but ultimately it doesn't change the issue.

im taking the car friday to the dealer to see if they'll replace the turbo but if they deny me due to being catless ill try the oil to at least reduce the smoke a bit
