(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Hi, I have a 2008 Mazda CX-7 with a 2.3L turbo engine with 143,000 miles. I drained the oil from the oil pan and after looking at the oil found glittery metal shavings. After doing some more poking around the engine and removing the valve cover it seems that the timing chain is rubbing on top of the valve cover causing metal shavings to be distributed throughout the engine. What would cause this to happen? Could I solve this by replacing the valve cover? Any input would be extremely helpful! Last edited by Crazy8Ballin; 09-26-2019 at 09:27 PM. |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Doing some further research I also realize that chain tension & the VVT can be a contributing factor to cause rubbing on the valve cover but my chain tension seems good...so I am unsure of where to go from here. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score You need the timing chain/VVT actuator replaced. That's one of the worst cases I've seen, the chain actually chewed through the ribs of the cover. Your car is a ticking time bomb. Get it replaced ASAP. |

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score What exactly does a bad VVT actuator do? Does it cause slack in the chain that in turn causes the chain to rub on the valve cover? |

| Not Ranked : 0 score It stretches the timing chain until your tensioner can't keep tension, hence the gouges you see on the valve cover. |

| Not Ranked : 0 score Symptoms are classic for VVT actuator failure. Known issue. Mazda issued a bulletin and offered free fix up to a certain number of miles by a certain time deadline. Basically an extended warranty on that issue only. Had mine done then. They replaced the chain as a part of the extended warranty. Do it or get it done before it jumps time and royally fucks up your engine. When valves are still open at the same time that pistons reach top dead center, they collide and the result is catastrophic.
