Default Cosworth balance shaft delete/F2 oil pan baffle installed

I had completed the balance shaft delete months ago. The kit was a cheap 30 bucks from Focussport. They were advertising the Cosworth oil pan baffle as well but no longer had them in stock. After speaking directly with Cosworth, they had no plans to make another batch so I was basically SOL>
"Averia" from the 6 club stumbled on this F2 Motorsports pan baffle(made by Gillis Motorsport) and forwarded the link to me. If you don't know, these are crossover parts from the Focus Duratec engine. You may ask what other parts "corssover" and I'll answer, that's about it lol
It was 125 bucks. I honestly would have prefered the Cosworth piece over this but it will do. The fitment was OK due to elongated holes and choppy fabrication but again, it will suffice.
The removal of the oil pan is super simple

a bunch of 10mm bolts running along the front and back of the pan
there are 4 - 8mm bolts that connect the side of the oil pan to the timing chain cover and there are 4 - 14mm bolts that connect the other side of the oil pan to the transmission housing.
remove all of them, use the small "pry" area in front near the oil filter housing to seperate the pan from the block>then the messy fun begins
*you will also have to remove the 8mm bolt holding the oil dipstick to the intake mani>pull out the dip stick

If you attempt this, be prepared to spend a lot of time cleaning the block mounting area and the oil pan itself.
A parts washer is a valuable tool during this mod.

One of the highlights is that your engine will now hold almost 7 quarts of oil(I use 6.8)
If you are concerned with $, then don't do this.
I use Eneos oil and 7 quart changes every 4K isn't cheap lol

The car revs noticable quicker
And by removing the balance shaft assembly, you are removing about 17 lbs. of metal from your engine
It's one heavy SOB

We could speak for days why you should and should not remove the balance shafts and if you like let's discuss....

Mine have been removed for over 8K miles or 2 oil changes
This is my third oil change with the B/S removed and now the baffle installed.

Enjoy the pics and ask away if you need some additional info

this is a pic of the engine with the balance shafts removed - the gear you see "was' turning the balance shafts

this is the Cosworth B/S delete plug - which blocks the oil that "was" feeding the balance shafts

this is a pic of the OEM pan with the OEM small side baffles

these are pics of the F2 baffle & installed

Wow dude, perfect for those draggin or doing serious road course racing!

So, since you put it out there, i understand the balance shafts are considered necessary in 4 cyl motors to remove vibrations.

So you havent experienced any more vibrations from their removal?

I could give you a better answer if my engine mount wasn't upgraded before the balance shafts were removed.
I have the 88 dur AWR mount that has made my speed a heavy duty vibrator since that was installed. So basically it wouldn't matter either way to me and decided to take advantage of the quicker revs, improved oil control, increased oil capacity, less weight, etc etc etc
Not an instant HP gain monster mod but I think a worth while mod

Great, informative post you made. Too bad about the Cosworth oil pan baffle, that would have been nice to have.

Hey Woosh,
You ever make it down to south VA to virginia international raceway? I figure if you're installing better baffles, you've gotta be tracking or autox'in!

We have the baffle with a windage tray coming out for it here very soon. I wonder why the skipped on the windage tray when they did the baffel? Odd.

they copied the Cosworth and they probably realized that it wasn't needed. We offer the option of the balance shaft delete with our built motors. It would be much easier than reinstalling the balance shaft. I've built 5 of them so far and no one wanted the damn delete.

Any way that the BS assembly could strip the gears when the power starts to get up higher? 17lbs is going to be tough to keep up with the motor if things start getting to much for them power wise. As far as the tray goes, big ass flat piece of metal to bounce the oil back up into the crank? I am sure Cosworth did there homework but come on, that can not be good or eff in getting the oil back into the pan.

Any concerns that the increased vibes might destroy the oil pump or other components?

I'm asking because, with the Miata engines, replacing the crank pulley with a light-weight aluminum billet one induced vibrations into the oil pump causing it to disintegrate in the engine... The stock crank pulley had a dampener in it...
This wasn't an issue with rebuilt blue printed and balanced engines.

Just wondering if this has similar effects on this engine...?

Not too sure honestly the gears are pretty beafy but there really is no way to tell until it does happen I guess. Cosworth removes it on their race engines though.

Yeah my car has been sitting for about 4 months now. I 'm sure all the oil has drained to the pan - now is the time to do this for me.

I like to think that anything is possible but this senario is not likely

Our crank pulley is a dampener as well

17lbs is a bathroom weight scale measurement of the entire B/S assembly after removal>not rotating weight

the big ass plate sits higher than the oil level of the pan and is there to reduce the windage effect as well as control oil during hard cornering/acceleration

I do think that a few drain holes wouldn't have hurt but I seriously doubt that oil starvation will be an issue. Especially since the pan has an almost 7 quart capacity now that the huge B/S assembly is no longer submerged in the pan

it should only be around $20 for the "kit".... which consists of the plate and the bolt.... and if there's already no oil pan on then there really isn't anything to it.

F2? I found their BS kit but not the baffle. I'm going to do this I guess.

This wasn't an issue with rebuilt blue printed and balanced engines.

Just wondering if this has similar effects on this engine...?
Shouldn't. There is no proof that removing the BS assembly can cause dangerous conditions other then those that you can not create because of the redline. The LW pully's on the other hand have been linked to many destroed oil pumps and gearotor assemblys.

I want to ask again, does anyone think that if your going to put a huge plate in the motor should you not also but some sort of way to wipe the oil from the crank, windage tray anyone? Something other then a huge ass metal plate that is perfect for bouncing the oil back up into the crank.

Basically a piece of metal that helps prevent oil from splashing onto the crankshaft from the sump. This helps prevent hp loss from the crank having to deal with chucks of oil being thrown at it while its spinning around. Usually works in conjunction with baffles to provide excellent oil control in high g situations.

Here's a photo of one installed.

again, forgive my ignorance, but what harm comes from splashing oil onto the crankshaft?

Keeps the oil where its supposed to be, allows for efficient drain of oil away from the crankshaft, and prevents horsepower loss from the oil splashing on the crank while its trying to turn. (ie. Only the oil thats supposed to be there is there).

Thank you. I thought it was only me thinking that a windage tray or at least a crank scraper would be a nice option to have on that set up.

I completely agree. If you're going to have the whole thing apart and in pieces, you might as well put everything you can on there .
