Default holset hx35?

holset hx35

Anyone else thinking about trying a setup with this turbo? I am. Tell me what you think. It is capable of 500+ HP...I know it will take some fabrication and intuition im up for it tho. Ive seen used ones go for 250-400 and looks like they sell them brand new for about 700. Theres tons of info in the link.

Holset and Garret are always easy to build and there's so many varieties it's easy to find one to suit. KKK and the Japanese turbos like the KO4, always seem fussy to play with. I can rebuild a T3/4 practically as fast as a Marine can field strip an M4, it's that easy.

I think it would work well once we are able to make the power... on the L28 (2.8L) the HY35 is good to ~550HP at 21psi if I remember correctly. A rebuild kit was $75 at a local shop. I wish they were water cooled and Ball bearing though.

I have thought about putting one on my MS3...

Like stated above they make good power and spool faster than you would think for a turbo of that size. A lot of dsm people are getting into them recently, and as long as you have a good oil feed/ return setup they are lasting long. I actually have a holset H1C i was planning on putting on my dsm, which is basically the same turbo as the hx35, but my plans changed.

If they were BB, they'd get harder to rebuild and uncheap, you can't have your cake and eat it too. No water cooling means just a minute of idling cooldown after hard running. I do that anyway, even on this water-cooled car.

Time was, Holset really opened up the options for BT, over the Garrett offerings. It seemed Garrett either had too small turbines or too large for alot of applications, forcing people to go hybrid, etc. Holset brought a whole bunch of new options to the party.

So what do you think of it for this car? What are the things i would have to change in order to make this happen id like to start a list of pros and cons. Basically i want to know if choosing this turbo over a 3076, being that it is way way cheaper, would still be worth it.

That's actually a diesel turbo. Technically diesel turbos are not designed to work on gasoline engines since a diesel engine burns so much cooler than a gas engine. Because of the heat difference, and the fact that gasoline is so much more caustic than diesel, the turbo probably won't last a long time without needing a rebuild.

if you worried about price you could always get the journal bearing version of the GT3076 and save some money. that would be the T3 version only though as ATP doesent offer that version.

You know how many HX turbos I've seen in gas applications? TONS. It makes no difference if the turbo wasn't designed for gas. So yeah, there's turbos designed for diesel OTR truck applications. These typically have large turbine sides in relation to the compressor because diesel trucks tend to run long periods of steady state throttle at high loads and throttle response and acceleration aren't as big concerns. There is NOTHING wrong with running one of these on a gas engine, as long as the user sizes it for the use planned.

...and since we're not planning on running a draw-through carb or injection, how caustic gasoline is is not a concern at all.

You'd be pretty surprised how flexible turbos are when used outside of their intended application. It's one of their great charms.

Yes diesels run much cooler than gasoline engines, this is why 9/10 times you buy a used holset the thing is mint and theres no rebuild needed. They are great turbos to use on gasloline or diesel applications.

I think it's a good idea. Block off the water line, get a manifold and away you go. I've been thinking more and more about this... and I think I'm going to do it.

that's good to hear I'm going to start collexting the parts for this soon I found a used turbo on eBay that needs a rebuild for 75 lAst night

Things I will need:
t3 manifold ewg..and wastegate
turbo
4in custom intake
custom downpipe
oil line/fittings
most likely an electronic boost controller

hopefully the turbo will mate up with my I/c piping if not I will have to have someone modify it. I'm also hoping I can find a used manifold that way I don't have to have it custom built.

I will also have to make some type of restrictor for the oil pressure since it is crazy high compared to what these turbos are used to

I'd rather use a custom mani... no sense in using the stock POS if your gonna upgrade the turbo...

im talking with a company now that makes adapters for exhaust manifolds to use different turbos. Im trying to see if they will make one that will adapt the stocker to a t3 hopefully they say yes. I wonder who else will be interested.
i might depends on price... im looking into a couple diff options now myself

Yes hx35...i havnt decided on weather i am sticking with the stock exhaust housing or what....theres a place that makes a housing with a "universal" looking flange style that might allow me to use my turboxs downpipe with it. I still have to look into this more.
That turbo cost me 250! No shaft play spins beautifully it has 40,000 miles on a very good rebuild from a very trusted diesel shop.

you figure out what manifold you gonna use or if your gonna reflange one... i have decided to reflange. so if i go that route i shoud have the turbo in a week or 2 and have it on the car with in the next 2-3 months.... just in time for spring and warmer weather

Its an 8 blade HX35. It has a 56 mm compressor wheel and flows 52 lbs/min. It has a T3 12 cm twin scroll exhaust housing. Using the stock exhaust housing and an open T3 manifold with the 2.3 liter motor I would bet it should hit 20 psi by around 3k-3.3k rpm. Should make for a very good alternative to the GT3076. Its a journal bearing and is oil cooled only. No water ports.

The reason the compressor wheel looks so small is because the sheer size of the compressor housing itself. Holsets are known to have massive compressor housings. This housing is easily larger than a T67 housing, yet has a smaller wheel in it. I don't know why Holset does this. Lol.

This should make for a very interesting setup on fagwagons car. Him and I have been going back and forth (hes my roommate) about what to do about the downpipe and exhaust manifold and we havn't really figured it out yet. I'm hoping that by this summer we can have this in and have the fuel system installed that we've dreamed up and have a full write up (plus pictures) on how to make big power with these cars without spending $6k.
