I've done this... I have a MS CAI and when (though not often) we have heavy rains I make the CAI into a SRI, I cut the tube in the appropriate place and slid cone on..works great. The when the rain goes away I put a silicone coupler with 2 clamps on where I cut the tube and its back to a CAI. Works good either way. But I have seen on the dashhawk that when its a CAI the intake air temp is about 20 to 25 cooler. Hope that helps somewhat.

i also have done it to mine. twice.
first i cut it because i was tired of it getting wet when it rained.
the second time i had to cut it shorter for my custom front mount.

I had mine in SRI mode for a long time when I had a FMIC and then even after I took the FMIC off.

Just remove the lower tube and put the filter on the top pipe. You may or may not have to twist it from the inlet to get it to fit correctly. Make sure you put that relay box thing back on the side down there since it's attached to the CAI

Are you running the air straightener as well? Also does your filter cover the Mazdaspeed logo?

I did this today and have the filter and air straightener on, but it was a tight fit.

Can you twist the upper pipe to give more clearance?

Yeah I fiddled with it some more and covered a little more of the D as suggested, and it gave me a little more clearance. It still rests along the side 'frame' so to speak.

Hey MS6PC,

how were you getting the CAI wet? Did you not have a hydroshield that comes with the mazdaspeed CAI? I'm just curious, because I ordered my mazdaspeed CAI this past week and if there's a problem with it getting wet, I'm worried. I've heard it does not get wet unless I truck through like 12 inches or more of water.
