Default Rebuild Turbo?

Long story short, I'm having a buddy do an engine swap for me. He has the old engine out and pulled it apart to see what's going on and he told me

"Bolt that feeds oil to turbo has lots of metal particles on it and I should get the turbo looked at"

Turbo has very minimal shaft play, has about 30k miles on it, I drive pretty hard but try to let it cool down and idle for a min or so before turning the car off after driving w boost.

At this point what are my best options?

Say fuck it and put in the turbo and hope for the best?
Can a shop open it up and look at it or something?
Rebuild it?
New turbo? Don't really want to do this.. already drained a ton of money into the swap

He says the turbo at least needs a clean, but he's not comfortable with opening it up right now, anyone know good shops around Seattle area?

No point in wasting time and money rebuilding a k04 when you can find lightly used ones here for a couple hundered bucks.

Sell it to me for $50 and I'll give you a k04 from a cx-7.

it's a win/win.

In all honesty, I would say have it rebuilt. It's been good to you for 30k miles, and cheaper than buying a brand new one. Just make sure you have it done by a legit shop. Or get the parts, rebuild it yourself, then take it to a shop and get it all balanced.

I may as well rebuild it.. I'm trying to look for a solid rebuild kit on Google, but can't seem to find anything.

I have the ATP variant if it matters (Garrett GTX2867R 475HP Dual Ball Bearing Turbo - less turbine housing : atpturbo.com)

Can someone link me to a good rebuild kit?

My turbo guy said he couldn't rebuild ball bearing turbos because nobody would sell him the rebuild kits/parts. He only rebuilt journal bearing turbos. Lucky I didn't need a rebuild but still interested if you find a kit/parts for a rebuild.

I emailed Garrett and got a response back, they also confirmed ball bearings aren't rebuildable and I'd just need to contact ATP about their ball bearing exchange program. Basically send old one, they send new one for a discounted rate.

You'll need a press if you're going to rebuild it yourself, watch a couple Gt series rebuild videos on youtube, its really not that difficult.

just make sure you mark the wheels to the Chra so when you reassemble it it'll balance out the same.

I suggest buying CHRA. It will be already balanced for you.

Scratch that I looked up prices and holy fuck its over $1k. I paid like $200 for K04 CHRA, with one year warranty from rotomaster. Looks like rotormaster doesn't make CHRAs for your application.

@shamie

Got a response back from ATP, here's their response

Sorry to hear about your turbo. The exchange program is Garrett's recommended service. Through the program you exchange your damaged Garrett GTX2867R CHRA (rotating assembly only) and purchase a BRAND NEW Garrett GTX2867R at a significant discount; $690.00 plus shipping fees.

If you would like to participate in the program, please provide the following information and we will respond with shipping instructions:

1. Full name
2. Address
3. Telephone number

Thank you
