personally i like to see all this progress. its fun to see pictures and work out details along the way. what if sean comes across a problem and needs some advice? technically we are all testing this manifold as we are giving our opinions to further improve it. carry on!!

Its on.

Man, i dont know how you guys like the sound of an open wastegate dump. sounds like shit.

i have some tuning issues to work out. And a few more pics... you can see how much i had to cut off the studs on the head. the size to get those studs out is an e8. same socket as to get the fuel pump off.

Steed

I would recommend modifying the design to allow more room to get at the nuts.

It appears Speed3shon was forced to use the open end of the wrench due to insufficient room to get the closed end in on some of the nuts, and they are partially rounded off as a result.

Just my 0.02.

I think the factory nuts and studs will need to be changed for something less bulky in those 2 locations. I'll source ARP studs and nuts etc and include them with the manifolds. How far are they threaded into the head? 10mm fine or coarse thread?

Thanks for the great work Sean and keep the pics coming + let us know on the wastegate pipe arrangement.

That would be an excellent upgrade. I unfortunately do not know the answers to your questions.

Keep up the great work. Some of us have been through the prototyping path before and understand that you are doing an excellent job. Please keep sharing.

If I didn't already have a PG manifold, I would certainly be in line to get yours.

having this thing dumping is not an acceptable noise level. Since i will be getting a production manifold, i will be holding off on a recirc tube until i get that.

I will just have to lay off the boost until that happens, which should be easy enough, my motor build parts will be here soon.

Do you have a dump pipe connected to the waste gate? A dump pipe though still loud will probably make it a little more bearable as it would be under the car.

I agree. Its loud right now because the wastegate is dumping inside the engine bay. My Civic had a pipe routed out the side through a hole in the fender and it wasn't bad at all as the noise goes away from the car.

LBV,

this is not a QC problem. The holes on the wastegate flange are not tapped through because they must have been tapped after being welded to the flange, and you need a special tap to tap the hole through, as the clearance on the back side doesnt allow for a normal tap to tap through. This is a prototype afterall.

As I said, this adapter is choice otherwise. I have no problem with having to make small adjustments as the test fitter. The production manifolds im assuming will have a relocated EWG flange rather than use an EWG relocating adapter. So there should be no worries on your end.

-Shon
FYI: It's not really a "special" Tap... It's just a bottoming tap. Most cheep tap & die kits only come with the tapered taps. http://www.stuartmodels.com/images/a...50-72061lg.jpg (notice that the thread is not fully formed until roughly half way up the tap). Not a problem if you have room to run the tap all the way through.

Bottoming taps are for holes that are "blind" (not through the work piece) or holes that have little back clearance such as the EWG flange. http://www.armacoil.com.sg/Enlarged%...oming-Plug.jpg (Notice the threads are fully formed after roughly 2 threads).

Chances are the machinist grabbed the wrong style tap by accident (I have done it before). It's by no means even remotely a tiny problem as it only takes 30sec (IF that) to run a bottoming tap through the hole to form the last couple threads. Minor error easily fixed.

Note: A taper tap should be use before a bottoming tap when hand taping, as a bottoming tap requires more torque and is more likely to break when running full hole. A taper tap is also easier to square up to hole hole, as the is more play in it.

-David

Thanks for the info, i know this, but was just too lazy to type it all out. But as you said, most sets come with tapered taps.

your car probably doesn't sound very good because you don't have your dump pipe on yet
dumping right out of the EWG in the engine compartment will sound crappy
once you have the dump redirected back into the D/P or at least 12-14" screamer pipe pointing toward the ground, the sound will be sweet

if the sound is really that bad you could dump it back into the downpipe.

I suggest you dump it back like myself. Even w/ the screamer pipe, you will like it for the first couple of month but......It will eventually get to you.

With it recirculated, you will slightly hear it. You will also hear the sweet whine of your turbo more.

I was going to have the re-route tube made today or tomorrow, but the shop didnt have the flanges available, so i had to pick them up from atp. I ordered 3 flanges. One will go very close to the downpipe, so that the reroute tube is removable to make the dp easier to remove.

I will have the work done when i get back from costa rica in february.

If someone can get me a DP and a stock turbo (blown is fine) I can make up some downpipes with the wastegate routed into the DP.

If it's too loud for you, use a motorcycle muffler and dump it out the bottom.

Not at all. I just need to set up a jig to locate the manifold, turbo, downpipe and wastegate so I can establish the relative positions and create a custom pipe that follows the same path and will meet the stock exhaust system.

Looks like I have the DP sorted with Kingpin being a short drive from me. All I need now is a stock turbo to mock the rest of it up. A blown turbo would be perfect. If you are thinking about getting my manifold and can help with this you get the prototype downpipe $0.

In response to your made-to-order policy, are T25 inlet / C5 outlet flanges for non-ATP GT28s going to be an option? A C5 flanged DP w/ EWG dump pipe would be great.

With the latest design changes I can send you a manifold with a separate turbo flange which can be switched at any time for another flange of your choice.

I passed my emissions test last night (no cats either, lol), so I can send you my stock dp whenever. I'd want the new one set up for a BW S366 turbo though. I don't remember if those are 4-bolt or v-band. PM me your address when you get a moment.
