Default Tired of Doing My Best Steam Train Impression...

...is what I've been doing for the last year or so. My k04 has been smoking for a while now. Only for four or five minutes after a cold start, and only during idle. It's not the end of the world, but it's annoying. I'm tired of trying to look casual while my car "idles" at 1500 RPMs (which is me sitting there with my foot just barely touching the gas), but I don't want to actually raise my idle either.

About the car... It's a 06 MS6 with just over 130K miles. Engine/power-wise, it's got HPFP internals, AP, SRI, TIP, upgraded TMIC, CS catless downpipe, CS catless, resonated race pipe, Forge BPV, and a Cobb dyno tune good for 277/337 AWHP on the stock, well-used k04. I've got a second, used k04 that I picked up that's supposedly not smoky. But I realize that it, too, will probably start to smoke eventually given my meager mods. After giving it some thought, I figure it'd make sense to upgrade.

Honestly, I'm happy with the car's power level now. It's fun. I'm not looking to be the king of Mexico, or a dyno god, or to wave my e-peen at people online. I really just wanna replace the k04 with something more reliable and less shitty than the k04. BNR seems to be pretty damned popular, and a S1 looks to be a direct drop-in. But everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY says that I might as well get an S3. Reliability is my first, second, and third priority. And I don't want to do any add'l supporting mods... At most, I'd like to drop in a turbo and get a get a tune.

If I splurge and get a BNR S3, can I drop it in with just a tune? If no, what about a [discontinued] S2? Stick with an S1? Corksport? Rebuild my k04?

I'm open to all advice and/or suggestions...

Get an S3. No reason to get anything else.

Will an S3 require any other supporting mods?

No. It's a drop-in turbo. The only thing you might find yourself needing is an extension for the hose that runs beneath the turbo inlet (though I didn't have this problem).

If you enjoy your insta-spool on the K04, then be warned: anything bigger than the K04 will cause a noticeable amount of lag.

The S3 is a sweet spot for these cars in general. Both the S3 and S4 will have noticeable lag compared to a K04 on a well flowing setup. The S3 is similar in size to a 2871 and spools around 32-3300. The S4 is like a baby 3076 and spools around 3600. Personally I prefer the response of the K04. You can buy rebuilt K04's from BNR for $400 I believe, with upgraded turbo seals. No core charge.

I went BNR Stage 1 because I'm only interested in replicating the K04 flow with my modest mods while getting Garrett 28 series CHRA in the K04 housing. Its a good option with my mods. I like the fast spool in a daily driver and am satisfied with the power level and curing the smoking problem for good.

I'm in a minority on the issue, but 300/300 is good enough for me and uber reliable.

I've decided to go with the Corksport Turbo. It's super direct install looks to be super direct, and it comes with a 3.5 bar MAP for the super low price of free. Although I didn't want to do any add'l supporting mods, it looks like I'll be picking up an EBCS and a larger intake as well before getting a tune. I may as well take advantage of the turbo's extra oomph. EBCS' look pretty similar; I couldn't find any discernible difference between brands. I'll probably go with Corksport as well. Them intakes, tho'. I'll probably stick with JBR since the JBR stuff I currently have is quite nice and works well. But I don't know if I should go with 3 inch or 3.5 inch. From what I've read, the 3 inch should be sufficient (and it wouldn't involve a smaller battery, battery tray, and moving the ECU around). The 3.5 would be more in line with future-proofing down the road in case I ever decided to go legit big turbo (and/or providing a bit of downstairs compensation), as I couldn't find any real benefit over the 3-incher in this particular application.

To be clear though, would there be any noteworthy benefit in running a 3.5-inch intake with a BNRS3/Corkspot-sized turbo as opposed to a 3-inch?

How did the install go?Did you wait before getting a tune? I'm installing a cs turbo tommorrow and haven't heard anything back from pdtuning yet.
