CX-9 sized brakes on a CX-7

The size of the backing plate and similar offsets on the caliper brackets suggested that the CX-7 and CX-9 shared similar brake parts. So after buying one caliper bracket and confirming that it did fit, the rest of the parts (rotors, pads, other bracket) were ordered and put on.

This would fit on a CX-9 too.

Old rotors, caliper bracket, pad.. quite a difference

Very cool. In theory, since CX-7 shares a lot with MS6, CX-9 brakes may fit Speed 6!

If the backing plate is the same size, then it probably would haha

It was the most economical bigger-brake upgrade that I could think of (was originally my friend/mechanic's idea). Corksport and Brembo seem to be the only choice otherwise, but there are other things I'd rather do first with ~$1.5k..

The only reason I did this was because it was relatively cheap ($300 total parts+labor) and my front pads/rotors were almost done anyways. The rear rotors, after 76k miles, still look pretty clean and even now the pads seem to have plenty of padding left so I'll probably leave those until they wear out.

Also long time no see raider, you still got your 7? (im ryoonc from mcx7.com a while back, the site seems to have died)

Would be awesome if this actually ended up working on the 6 as well. Cool idea

What size are the CX9 brakes?
Also aren't their calipers twin piston?

I know the cx7 is twin piston, and I'd bet the cx9 is too

As for the size, a quick search yielded:

D1258, Rotor Size: 12.6

So the rotor diameter on the CX-9 is the same as the MS3. The calipers are the same CX7 and CX9.

Old thread bump -

So will they fit on a ms6 or no?

JVal1283 07-26-2015 05:12 PM

I'm assuming this is just a front brake upgrade...I don't see the rear needing much

Also, I would just need to buy the bracket, rotor, & front pads for a 9 correct?

Old thread bump as I need to replace my rotors and pads.

is there anyone that actually made it and can confirm the new minimum wheel size with those cx9 brakes. I need to replace brakes on my wife cx7 but she just bough brand new 17inch winter tires this year and i would like to be able to re-use it...

I ask because while hauling the camping car with it, having better brakes could help a bit...But if it need 18inch minimum, i may just look into more agressive pads and keep factory size.

By the way, i can confirm the cx7 2010 factory size front brakes are smaller in diameter than Ms3 or MS6, but the disc thickness is heavier on the cx7. (i have both in hands.)
So ms6 swap could give more ''bites'' but could probably fade a bit faster because of the thickness difference

The ms3 and 6 are close in diameter and the ms6 caliper + braket would bolt up there (I mean replacing both caliper + brakets and disc) but not with the 3 hardware.....

what year CX-7 does the OP have? Gen 1 or Gen 2?

or all the front brakes on the CX-7 the same?

Also anyone experiment with the Gen 2(16-19) CX-9 front brakes?

shopping for brakes for the cx7, rotor and pads seem the same for all years....

old mazda was using fomoco parts with ford but new cx9 are no longer half a ford so i expect less chance to fit...maybe more from an escape or something similar.
