Default The Miata Thread!

Seems like quite a few guys on here also own Miatas..and who ultimately led me to pick one up myself. Post up pics if you have one and discuss anything Miata related!

Here is the '99 I got a week ago or so:

Completely stock, but want to turbo it in the near future. No plans to build the engine or do anything crazy.

LS1 would be awesome. I can't think of anything that sounds cooler, but I just don't think it's feasible in my current setup/location. Maybe something like that one day down the road.. of if I blow the stock miata motor

Gonna need new tires soon- which means new wheels and tires together. Probably 15x8 or so and run 225 tires. Also want to swap in 01+ headlights for the projectors and get an HID kit (halogens suck ass).

As far as turbo stuff. I want to get my tuning up and running first on the stock motor. They recommend getting the car running with the standalone ECU as is.. then add injectors.. then turbo, so I'm gonna follow that route. For tuning I will be getting DIYPNP (megasquirt). Injectors... popular options are 440cc or whatever those RX7 injectors are or 550cc. I think for stock engine 440cc would be enough, but I'll just have to see and look more into it. 250whp seems to be the safe limit for stock motor and 5 speed tranny. As for turbo.. not sure, GT2560 or similar. I want to keep the 5 speed tranny and get a 3.9 rear end torsen (car has 4.3 gears now, would be too short for turbo IMO).

Other than that, I need to look into it more, basic suspension stuff, nothing top end or crazy like waht Mr_mazda has. and probably some little visual stuff here and there

rpf1's! bigger tires will slow down your car quite a bit, so it'll motivate you to turbo it

those 6ULs or whatever seen pretty nice too. and I can get them in 15x8..whereas I think the RPF1s I'd be forced to get 15x7 (i think)?. I guess on a 225 tire, 7" would be fine. Always been a big fan of rpf1s too.

Nice 99.

A rollbar is a must

The 99 motor has solid lifters and better flowing ports but also higher compression.

The motor can take 250whp all day if tuned well. Most people burn them up due to improper tune or cooling.

MS is a great system - I've built many and tuned many. 440-460cc injectors are fine for 250whp, you'll need 550s for anything more.

Supercharger is also an option on these cars.

I'd also get some chassis bracing, suspension, sway bars, and with some sticky tires, better brakes, and an LSD it will own with 250 to the wheels. The turbo you mentioned may be on the small side however. Check out miataturbo forums - lots of people sell turbo parts and kits you can get for cheap.

You will need a new clutch for 250whp. If you can find a 6 spd tranny and swap it in while you're at it, that's the one to get.

As far as cooling... what is needed for let's say 250whp turbo?

I've seen the coolant re-routing kits that are supposed to help a lot- would this be sufficient? Miata Coolant Reroute System

Pretty much what you mentioned Lex is what I've been looking into and plan on doing.. Any specific recommendations on roll bars? Never dealt with them before.

I've heard the 6 speed can hold a lot more power, I just don't like the short spaced gearing. If I could get something like a 3.2 rear end it would be perfect I think.. 5 real gears and a true over drive. I think there's 3.6 gears out there, but they only come from Australian models...so they are rare and $$$$. I've played with lots of gearing calculators and I just don't want the lower gears to be totally useless like with the ms3. I've heard good stuff about the 5 speed with 3.9 gears from turbo miata guys- that sounds pretty good to me. 6 speed would be better im sure for pure road course..but fact is ill use it 99 percent of the time on the street.

I stalk miataturbo.net all the time. Right now there's a GT2560 with less than 1k miles for 625...tempting....

I've thought many, many times about buying this '92 off my neighbor and making it into a track toy:

The homo-flames would come off. But I think he sold it today for $1500. Replaced it with a 2001 V6 Failstang.

Go with a coldside supercharger kit.

I had a '99 10th Anniversary Edition with the 6 speed and Bilstein suspension package, amongst the other goodies like alcantara seating and polished wheels. Great car, but got rid of it a long, long time ago. I wouldn't mind picking up a used one and supercharging it.

I had a hotside JR Racing supercharger on mine running 5psi and it was a high 14 second car with 160whp.

those flames are too much.. lololol

any reason you say SC over Turbo? turbo just puts out a good bit more power which is why i was leaning that way. with a proper sized turbo lag doesnt seem to be an issue

I've been told (by a dealer who probably doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground) that the next Mazdaspeed car will be the MX-5 with the 2.3L DISI and MS3-style power.

That would be kick-ass for the track.

94s are cool because they are the last year to have a 'real' oil pressure gauge... not just the low/high crap

Does it really matter for a car of that type? SVT Focus have a real oil pressure gauge too.

Nice Aaron! Looks like you're thinking the same things I am with mine. Except I'm leaning toward supercharging (coldside ftw) because I already have a turbo car and my dad has an M45 supercharged NA.

Here's some pictures -

The 99 has the best engine for forced induction; the heads off those engines cost a pretty damn good penny if you ever decide to part. I had a 97 that I sold about 1.5 months ago which I dearly miss but had to sell.

Note: if you get the car to output about 220 WHP, you will be in deep doodoo

a miata is good fun. i did brake upgrades and springs and autox it often. it keeps up with faster cars at the autox.

suspension tuning and sticky tires goes a long way with this chassis.

Oh yay.. a gay miata thread. lol. I have a 97 and it currently has a Jackson Racing supercharger on it runnin 5psi. Good fun, but I am planning on going turbo by next winter. Most likely the BEGI S4 kit with a GT2560R on it.

Aaron.. I would definately go with the 6ULs and 225's. I have RPF1's for my Street setup which are 15x7's 225's RS2's. My track setup are 14x7 +19 8lbs and w/e R-comp i chose in a 205/55. And for suspension aaron, check out the FCM's http://fatcatmotorsports.com/FCM_Bil...er_revalve.htm . Still spending a lot of money, but i wish these were out before i bought my ohlins just cuz they are so customizable and ride better too.

Miatas still look queer. Only way to get the cool factor back is with some huge tires and a nasty blown v8 under the hood.

That's actually an easy fix. Search for it over at Miata.net.

I like the SC route because it's got a more natural power band. Table flat torque "curve" and rising power right to redline.

In a car that weighs under 2,500lb, it doesn't take much to get it moving. 200whp will get it in the 13's.

My '01 is alive and kicking these days. I need to replace the starter and slave cylinder, but it is on its second motor and running strong!

The stock wheels were bent so I put some TR Motorsport 15x8" wheels from tirerack on. It's almost Mexiflush and needs a drop badly.

Flying Miata has good parts but you can find most of them used. They carry a lot of good roll bars for around 350 new.

An SC is easier to plumb and install but the power potential is smaller.

Loved my '91.

Had it for 4 years, but last summer it was time to get a more family-oriented vehicle (MS3). I found a buyer who was going to drive up to VA from TN the day after this happened:

No lie, the drive home from work that night was to be the last time I would ever get behind the wheel of the Miata. Well, it was...

The positive thing in all of this was that I got more from both the insurance settlement and the parts I removed and sold than I would have if I had sold it to the dude from TN.

I just brought my "Monster Miata Project" home last week, purchased solely to put the V8 in to it and have a $hit load of fun w/ it :-)

That is totally how mine looked too, minus the rollbar and the supercharger haha. Same color, same wheels, same moss low-pro, turn signal intakes... i miss it :[

BTW - if anyone wants I have a full set of EBC Yellowstuff for stock 94-97 brake calipers... $150 shipped?

Other than that, I need to look into it more, basic suspension stuff, nothing top end or crazy like waht Mr_mazda has. and probably some little visual stuff here and there
Those are pretty good EMS. I build and tune MS on a very regular basis. Its easy to use and is very adaptable to almost anything. They nice the about the miata is you can just buy a prebuilt PNP off the shelf for it.

I love Miata's...and I test drove several before the G35, and also before the MS3...just can't get away with it being my only car...

And I love Stoya as well, Mr. Mazda...

Yeah sadly they don't have actual PnP MS units for 99+, but they do have DIYPNP which is basically the same thing... except you have to solder some stuff still- BUT some guy on the forum in his spare time will do all that stuff for you, so end you end you can buy a PnP unit... I am probably gonna pick that up here soon and get started playing around with that.
