Mystery MX5 Engine - Can you Identify it?

I found this engine in a local shop and have done a Google search on the serial number with little success. I'm guessing this came out of a Japanese market MX5?? I need to know what it is exactly and what it came out of... Any help would be appreciated!

Stamped on the engine block: L820283533
ECU: L859 18 881B

Looks Like a Miata NC Disi N/A Motor. So 3rd gen miata based on the same architecture as the MS3/6 but with higher compression and no turbo.

I'm not familiar with Miata engines, what year range would that put it in? Is it a 1.8 liter disi?
It has a bolt on cooling fan which I've never seen and the serpentine belt is running slightly different than I've seen.
Sorry for the questions, I'm a rotary guy learning as fast as I can...

This not a BP 1.8L engine. Those are from 93-05.

This is from 06-13. I don't believe anyone has done an engine swap between the chassis, and I don't believe any of the parts are interchangeable.

Definitely NC, can't tell the year or displacement though. You'd have Betsy luck on a miata forum

Cool, thanks for the help I'll check miata forums, but I still dont think it came out of a miata... look at the tranny, its got a side linkage like out of a truck, not a sports car, any ideas on that?
I found a Mazda "Bongo" and Mazda "Scrum" with the same tranny...
This engine is true JDM, not US import.

I think it's a 1.8 NC motor, not available in the US, but available elsewhere around the world. It's pretty much a POS compared to the 2.0, and was probably only made available in countries where being 1.8L or smaller dodged taxes of some sort.

Also, NC chassis has more in common with the RX8 than the NA/NB miatas.

Ok, for anyone still paying attention, this is an L8 out of a Mazda Bongo... 116 hp, so not the deal I was hopping for!
