Default upgrading miater's sound system

i know nothing about audio.
there are four total speakers right now, two in each door. i have the bose package.
where should i start? the shit just isn't loud enough.
start with a head unit?
or upgrade the speakers?
if i want to amp the speakers, how many channels? 2 or 4?
head units have different wattage ratings...can i go the cheap route and get a 50watt head unit?

New radio up front, 8" comps in the front door(you can fit a massive speaker in the doors of those things), a good two channel amp for them.... Swap the rears for a decent coaxial and run them off the radio...

I passed an intrepid on the way home that was burned out from the rear doors back. I bet his buddy to him "we can do that amp shit easy"...

Come by my shop in NC Philly, and I'll give you half off of double price....LOL

The miata is pretty easy to work on though, just watch the dash around the radio, that plastic gets brittle after a few years in the sun..

a new headunit I doubt would put out 50 watts I thought they would put out maybe 20.

I would start with speakers then go from there. My next move is a 4 ch. amp for my Infinity Kappas I have in my doors then to sub/amp off of factory stereo

in older cars usually new headunit does the most... was the case in my old 99 civic. I added speakers after headunit, and it helped some of the clarity and low end sound, but headunti really did the most, having more power behind everything

Go with a new headunit (will make a huge difference, and yes, they can put out 50w x 4) and some better 6" speakers for the doors. Maybe tweeters (probably make the biggest difference with the top down). You can get some that you can stick to the top of the dash or some you can put higher up in the door. Personally, I wouldn't put too much $$ into it just for the fact that regardless of what you do, it's still not gonna sound great because of the car being a convertible.
