(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score I was in third gear hit it boosted car was gutless.. It didn't pull hard and then gutless it was just gutless from the beginning.. Drove about 500 feet and my check engine light came on and would flash every minute or so. Stopped and the car just died. No idle... Started it again and somewhat held an idle but LOTS of white smoke was coming out of the exhaust so there's water/coolant somewhere I'm guessing cause that's what causes white smoke right? Pulled a plug tip was white which means one of 2 things, running lean or water on the plugs from the distance I drove before stopping... Any help?

| Not Ranked : 0 score Ummm...whatever it is, sounds like you are pretty boned...check your coolant and see if there's any oil in it. Pull all of your spark plugs and make sure that your cylinders aren't full of coolant. If there's nothing in there, do a compression test. I'm thinking the CEL is going to be p0300 - random misfire. The light usually flashes when it's a misfire. I don't think it's your turbo because the only way it would affect your idle that much is if the wheels broke or somethin, but you would hear that. If turbo bearings fail, they make a lot of noise.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Welp pulled all the plugs did a compression test and cylinder 3 was low. Stuck a quetip taped to a straw down into the cylinder and it came out bright green. His head gasket fucked his couch. Oh and fwiw his coolant smelled like gas really bad.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Talked with a local Ford stealership and they quoted me about 1200 for parts and labor so I think I'll just go through them. Everywhere else is 1600-1800.. Also talked to them about the VVT Chain and it wouldn't be any extra cost for putting it in, I'm just paying for the chain itself. They are giving me a bit of a deal on this cause I am just barely 1200 miles over my warranty and want to help me out haha. They also replaced my smokey turbo about 8000 miles ago so I trust them. I bought it from Larry Miller and he doesn't have any Mazda dealerships so Ford is the closest thing. I'll let you guys know what the cost is final out the door because I haven't been able to find anyone that has had this done yet other than them doing themselves. How likely is the Hydrolock? I drove roughly 2 miles after this all happened..

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score I am pretty confident in the guy working on the car, he has built quite a few Sti's and Evo's but never any Mazdas.. I was a little nervous about this at first but after talking with the guy I feel comfortable. I'm certainly not rich lol but what has to be done has to be done. Also found out the head gasket was perfectly fine so the poopatrator of the incident was most likely the rod breaking. Haven't gotten that far yet but only 1 cylinder was full of coolant so and the head gasket looked fine. I have been running lean do to mods and NO TUNE. Let this be a lesson to people like me that said fuck it I'll get an AP later. Something that could have cost 600 tops is now costing THOUSANDS. Anyway I'll keep you guys posted on the build. Is there a section I should move this thread to?

| Not Ranked : 0 score The epic fail thread... Jk Burton. Hope it goes smooth for you. Id do a lot of searching to see what the best parts to get for the rebuild are. Rebuilds require A LOT of attention to detail so make sure he is being spot on. Is this guy offering any type of warranty on his work? If not I would maybe recommend looking into a shop that will warranty their work, even though you feel "somewhat comfortable" with his work. Its better to have your ass covered in case something happens again. Ill keep a look out for the parts you were asking about on utahmazdas

| Not Ranked : 0 score Running lean may not exactly be what broke your rod. You might burn a piston or a valve, but knock/too much torque is what typically breaks a rod. Yes, you can knock from running lean, but usually it's from bad spark timing. I have a couple datalogs of running as lean as 13.5 AFR at full throttle, but had absolutely no knock because my spark wasn't crazy. You had a case of bad luck combined with no tune.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score Yea I was considering just fixing the car and trading it for an 09 that is still under warranty haha! I wouldn't mind having an 09 anyway just cause I like the interior's more. But anyway I'm not to sure if it's even a busted rod yet.. I just know I have a hole in my 3rd cylinder wall about as big as your pinky finger. Not to sure what cause it yet but should find out by later today. I think this was a ling time coming because I feel my fuel pump has been going for some time now. Every once in a while I would be in 3rd gear between 3000 and 4000 RPM and would stomp it and my car would feel like it would cut out for sec but come right back. To me this sounds like fuel cut.. Any ideas? BTW not sure if I mentioned but the mods I was running were SRI, TIP, FMIC, HKS BOV full atmos and a gutted test pipe with no tune. From what I've read our fuel pumps cannot keep up with the amount of air these mods push. Not to mention no tune... FML I'll let you guys know what happened as soon as the car gets torn apart!

If you look at the top of the piston is appears you have an odd spray pattern from the injector. Also, look at the side, above the hole.... it looks like something was hitting/spraying on the cylinder wall. Just my observations. Last edited by HPFPUPGRADE; 02-24-2012 at 07:26 PM. | Not Ranked : 0 score OP forgot to mention that he ran the car out of oil a while back.. I'm sure that played a major role in the eventual death of the motor.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Sorry, just a question for any knowledgables in here I'm fully bolted like this fellow here was, (cp-e CAI TIP FMIC corksport TBE) and don't have the money atm for a tune. I'm a broke as hell college student. Fortunately I DOOOOO have a cp-e HPFP. Will having the fuel pump save me from anything like this happening? Or at least decrease the likelihood significantly? I know, I know. "Get a tune you idiot." I know all that jazz. I know the error in my ways NOW but it's a little late and now I have to wait until this summer and the possibility of consistent income.

(Thread Starter) | Not Ranked : 0 score So the mark above the hole is actually BIG grooves in the cylinder wall, I'm guessing from the piston bouncing after hitting the hole if that makes sense? Also the weird pattern I think is basically just from the coolant "steam" cleaning the piston and cylinder ha! If you look at it compared to the other cylinders it's super clean! I'm not doubting your observation by all means just saying shit was steam cleaned like the presidents suit! Anyway I think I will replace the injectors anyway just cause I'm already in there! Thanks for the advice too, much appreciated! And @ReD BoY I would get the AP ASAP! It's really not worth risking it.. I know you may not have the money which is the reason I didn't have one but what could have cost me 600 at most is now costing 3000+ That or never WOT until you do get one.. Having the pump may help out a lot but knowing what I do now and how temperamental our cars are I would have mowed lawns or got a paper route to get the money ha! Just be safe and save everywhere you can to get an AP. In the mean time for a cheaper route get a dash hawk and monitor the shit out of your car. Sorry for the long post...

| Not Ranked : 0 score I wouldn't jump to replacing the injectors.. You can get them cleaned and tested for a fraction of the cost.. Our injectors haven't been too prone to failure.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Yup, go to InjectorRX.com. I had 4 junk yard injectors that all turned out to work perfectly and InjectorRX flow-matched them for $125 shipped.
