Default Custom SRI made using factory MAF housing.

Ok.... so a little while age, I posted a how to on a way to make ur own bov and Cai for under $100. Well, that was my first fail... I was completely wrong. I was messing up my car and diddnt even know it. I had a cheap MAF housing bought from autozone that was way too big and making my car run lean as hell. So here is what I did... since I'm building on a budget, I had to go cheap but safe. My buddy Chris has a true Greddy RS bov that is cracked on the outside. I took this bov and took out the guts and put them into the shell of the immitation greedy type rs bov that I currently have. They fit perfect and no more comp surge. Now the sri was a little more difficult. I removed the factory airbox and used a hardening putty to fill the stock MAF housing. Once the putty hardened I knocked it out of the housing and had an exact diameter of the factory housing. I then took this molding to a local piping shop here in SC, and had them fabricate a pipe around the molding giving me almost an exact replica of the factory size MAF housing with a whole drilled into it for the sensor. I then carefully cut out the mounting bracket of the shitty 3" autozone MAF housing and mounted it on the new fabricated pipe. I then sanded it and painted it red to get rid of the ugly metal color (red was just a personal preferance). I have attached a pic of it and basically just want everyone's input on it. Whether you think it will work or not and why an how it looks. Obviously if I ever get some damn cash, I will invest in nicer parts but until then, is this safe? All together it cost me about $35 plus the price of the filter and red boot. So about $60. I have gone about 2400 miles since it was installed and no CEL's. Car runs excellent and Def feels like it has a little more power.

Well first off I think that after the first fail and now this I think you could have bought a used intake from the forum already after the time and money spent on this and the prior parts used. I can't tell you if this will work or not because I am new to mazdaspeeds, but I think you have already wasted time/money even if this new one works. Even if the new maf housing works, you still have that shitty acordian tubing in there which will never make your intake as effective as say a cobb or cpe intake. I am glad you came up with the idea with the putty and stuff (very creative), I just think you wasted so much time when you could have just bought one used for well below new purchase price. Last I checked there was a used Cobb for $110 shipped on here. Not sure if you returned those parts you used before, if you didn't/couldn't then you spent well over what that cobb would cost you.

troof.....

basically when you install a piece to your car, you want to get the best product for your price, if want something legit and not to pricey i suggest the cobb as well, granted it is 11 hp gain over stock it is alot better than a piece that you can pick up a pepboys.

i had a failed attempt at this awhile back say 6 years when i got my celica intake off ebay, granted i thought i was saving money by doing but in the long run only damaged the car by doing so.

granted the things we pay for might be pricey but no only are we paying for a name brand product. we also get the piece of mind that these people designed the product for our car.

i was looking at your pictures and the constant is that you keep the flex pipe there. im not tech or design guy but that right there is your biggest problem. you want smooth turbulent free suction something that stay's constant from the filter the the throttle body. nothing that changes diameter/shape/etc.

so in closing i say. save your money. and get the right mod for your car, in the long run you will enjoy your car more and the mod and not have to worry if your mod will soon fall apart. remember it is not a hobby, it is a lifestyle.

I'd have to chime in and agree with everyone above - that accordion looking rubber pipe is definitely not doing you justice, although great idea with the MAF housing. The corksport SRI (including the turbo inlet pipe) is $240 new, which is a steal. Their turbo inlet pipe by itself is $89 new as opposed to the cobb tip at $165... I would look into those as viable reputable options.

Although, I've seen someone sell their CP-e SRI tubing by itself on here, so probably if you can get a hold of any of the COBB, CP-e, or Corksport tubings from somewhere then you can just change that out and keep what you have for a low price.

Definitely sounds like too much to worry about though. Look around the For Sale section, I am sure you will find something useful.

well your accordion tube is going to add a lot of turbulence to the flow...you want a smooth bore...second...you dont have a full 3 in intake there....yes the MAF housing on all of the aftermarket intakes are stock size....however they open up to 3 in. ID from there....so you arent going to get nearly as much power as you would with one of those...i applaud you for the work you did....but sometimes it is better to just spend the little extra money to get something that has hours of R&D invested....

he may have wasted money and time, but hell, he learned something, he did it himself and he didn't just toss in an off the shelf part.

I say props to ya man!! Anyone can just buy something, but engineering your own is pretty damn cool.

When you get the rest of it sorted out, it should work well.

Of course all the R&D costs make this one setup not cost effective because the Corksport one is really nice and not much more, but if you could build another one, you could do it better, faster and way cheaper on round 2.

Thnk you kind sir.... U r probably right. In the beginning, I diddnt think it would even cost the small amount i put into it but I had already started and well, had to finish I guess. Its still working though with no problems
