Got ticket for missing muffler need help.

Hey guys, I have a cp-e triton cat back exhaust for a gen 2 ms3 i bought it used. I have a problem i got a ticket the other day cause i have no muffler on the exhaust. This comes optional when one orders from the cp-e website. I called cp-e and was basically told that it wasn't possible for me to order the muffler separately. I would like to get the muffler they use and have it installed here at a muffler shop since i'm in canada.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Like can i just buy a magnaflow muffler and have that installed. I figure one would just cut out the current center section at the back and weld in a muffler in place?

Any suggestions would be great here cause i just want to fix this without changing the whole exhaust.

Would be nice to have someone from cp-e chime in here and let me know why it's not possible to buy only the muffler you guys use. It would really help me out here.

Thanks

Your best bet is to call or email them.

nekret 07-23-2015 01:08 PM

I asked them before about this and they wanted $400 to ship the mid-pipe with the muffler. I decided to just leave my foot off the accelerator while I was around the local cops. FWIW if you really want one, the one they offer is a 12" long straight through muffler, get a stainless one from ebay or your local muffler shop and have a local shop weld it in, probably cost you less than half of what CP-E wanted.

Thanks man this is basically what i was looking to find out. I'll get one put on myself.

Do me a favor and take before/after clips, I'm starting to get tempted to do this again!

Sure no problem I just have to find something that fits...

Has anyone ever done this before. Cause i went to a muffler shop today and the guy wasn't sure he could find a muffler that fits. If anyone could please advise as to exactly what will fit it would really help me out cause the fit is really tight and i need to make sure i get the right muffler or i'll be screwed if it doesn't fit.

Here is a youtube vid of the exact exhaust i have you can see at the back that the fit is quite tight.

Thanks!

BTW raider i did call them twice they said they would call back and still haven't they basically seem to be of no help at all.

The first time i called the girl asked me to send pictures... Which is pretty retarded considering they MAKE the damn exhaust.

If they could chime in here it would be nice. I just need to know the dimensions of the muffler that they sell with the exhaust as an option with it.

Anyhow as always any suggestions you guys have would help a great deal.

I'm wondering if this would fit... I measured the resonators (i think that's what they are) They are about 12 inches long. So i'm thinking if one were to cut the pipes off of this magna flow muffler so that you only have a half inch of pipe on either end total length would be 12 inches. I should be able the have the resonators cut out and slip this muffler in and have it clamped or welded. Actually now that i think about it they could probably just flare the pipe and slip it over instead of cutting it .. That way they could just use clamps cause on one side it looks almost too tight to weld.

http://images.magnaflow.com/02product/parts/11378.jpg

I think this would be best solution and it should fit... I think... Comments?

Really? The CPE CBE is more quiet than my UR. I get no looks whatsoever

Djohns 08-04-2015 05:33 PM

I was told once a 1989 Camaro muffler would work

Nah it's loud as fuck.

nekret 08-04-2015 05:41 PM

I think they weld in a 12" muffler into the midpipe section (the pipe that connects to the downpipe)

forgive the blatant ripoff of corksport's images but i'd be willing to bet this is where they put that additional resonator.

O.k so forgive my ignorance here but the canister in that pic you just posted is a resonator right? Mufflers and resonators do different things. Right?

http://www.rallysportdirect.com/cata...cbem2_3_lg.jpg

These canisters on the cp-e triton that are on the back these are also resonators too right? If they are then i would assume that would mean cp-e probably adds the muffler in the same location corksport puts their resonator. cause it looks like corksport put the muffler on the back.

nekret 08-04-2015 07:34 PM

Yeah resonators and mufflers are different, I vaguely remember cpe saying that it was a straight through resonator but I'll see if I can find the source for that

Found the source and i stand corrected, cpe says its a muffler.

Cheers man!

I should be able to figure this out from here. I'll post back with pics when i fix.

nekret 08-04-2015 11:23 PM

Awesome, excited to see what you come up with as far as a suitable muffler!

MagnaFlow Exhaust Products - For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

Look for 5in. Round, Center/Center, 3in. in/out. This will 100% definitely fit because I managed to fit the Vibrant 1119 right above the mid chassis brace (the black steel plate with an oval cutout). My exhaust guy (AR Padua Motorsports - Toronto) was a beast and knew exactly what to do to in order to reposition the piping in such a way as to allow the Vibrant 1119 to fit. However, the 5" round Magnaflow would fit MUCH better in that space above the chassis brace, and cause way less hassle in terms of fitment.

How is it after the install? Cold startups used to be an absolute bitch - the noise of the unmuffled exhaust exploding all around the car, rising to a frenzied pitch then slowly settling down to something resembling normalcy, was very upsetting to most people (including myself sometimes). With the muffler in place, cold startups are still loud, but in such a way as to attract WAY less attention. The high pitched notes of the exhaust have been cut down, basically. With my muffler installed, I can still have a conversation with someone standing near my car as I do a cold startup. Before the muffler install? Not even shouting worked, even if the other person was just a few feet away. It's absolutely ridiculous how loud the CPE Triton is without the muffler, and I cannot imagine anybody ever wanting the Triton *without* the optional muffler - as far as I'm concerned, it is not optional.

Driving around is another pleasure regained with the muffler - you no longer have to feather the throttle in the first 2 gears so that it doesn't blast the sound out like a ricer kid. It's not super quiet by any means, but I'd say that about 60% of the crap has been cut out and you get the best of both worlds - an aggressive note, deep rumble, but definitely NOT obnoxiously so. I went to Mexico and did some WOT pulls after the install and you still get the aggressive sound that you want from the CPE Triton at full blast, but it's not glass shattering like before.

do you have a sound clip of your car with the vibrant 1119? i have thise muffler in my storage and plan on doing a custom piping for it.

speedfreak44 08-05-2015 10:31 PM

The vibrant one that sells for like $100 on ebay is 3" in out and an oval style should work perfectly.

@Elusivellama Thanks for the info just ordered this: MagnaFlow Exhaust Products - For Trucks, Suv's, American Muscle, Diesel, & Sport Compact Vehicles

As far as the comments about the triton exhaust i agree 100% cold start ups make my house shake in the morning so i'm sure my neighbor loves it. It also does drone on the highway imo. I would recommend getting this with muffler as well if ordering from cp-e i bought mine used so i didn't have the luxury.

I'll post pics once all is said and done.

Shwa 08-06-2015 08:22 PM

@sh4d0w;

Please please do.

I absolutely love the exhaust, best sound from any 4 cylinder engine I have heard. But yeah cold starts are retarded loud I just don't want to change the tone, just make it a tad more quiet. That has kept me from getting a muffler, worried it won't be the same exhaust.

sh4d0w 08-07-2015 08:07 AM

Just got muffler from purolator going to be getting it installed tomorrow.
@Shwa I agree 100% the exhaust sound it self is nice just a bit over the top in some cases. I'll have pics and sound clips of everything once i'm done. I took a sound clip of a start up this morning and couldn't help but laugh when i played it back cause jesus is it ever obnoxiously loud.

Elusivellama 08-07-2015 11:00 AM

If you just want it softer, then go with the Magnaflow that I mentioned as it has a 5" body and thus less sound deadening material than my Vibrant. It will also fit very nicely. If you can find another muffler that is smaller, then obviously it'll still muffle the noise but to a lesser degree than the Vibrant. I would describe it as a significant taming of the exhaust noise and drone while retaining a decent amount of the Triton sound characteristics.

If the raw CPE Triton is a 10 in terms of noise pollution, then the Vibrant CPE Triton is a 6.5 ~ 7, probably closer to 6.5 IMO. Think of it as a somewhat louder version of stock with a deeper note and the CPE sound. It's definitely muffled-sounding and significantly more civilized as a result, but it depend on your individual taste whether you like it or not. I mean you can still hear it from the outside and it'll still sound like a CPE Triton, but it won't be at ricer sound levels

tl;dr The 5" Magnaflow will fit, and you'll be happy with the amount of work it takes to install it(less work), and it'll quiet the exhaust down to a level that is still aggressive and loud, but not obnoxiously so. You will get used to it after a while and won't think twice about having tamed the CPE down. For me, the significant drop in dirty looks is enough reason to have had the Vibrant 6" installed and would not swap it out for anything with less sound deadening.

I can try and get a video up later.

Elusivellama 08-08-2015 11:31 PM

Glad to have been of assistance. Now you can actually use throttle without attracting too much attention.

pyrophelia 08-13-2015 11:51 AM

Wow - that looks super clean. Kudos to the shop and I'm glad your muff problem was solved!
