Default Tim Bailey Remote Tune

I've talked to a few guys about this on the forums and text messages and stuff, just wanted to bring it to a thread. A few of us have emailed Surgeline/Tim Bailey asking about the possibility of getting a remote/email tune based on datalogs. I know Numbnuts23848237423894 (or whatever the numbers are) got a reply saying they can do this for $150. I'm guessing he will tweak the tunes until you are happy for a flat rate. Someone else emailed them and they didn't really seem to know anything about it. I have emailed them and have not heard back yet (It's the Holidays, I'm not surprised).

Again, just wanted to share and let you all know. Hopefully we can figure out for sure if they will do it and if they're iffy, perhaps if we show enough interest they will break down and do it.

I'd like to know when ATR (AccessTuner Race) is coming out, to help decide if I want to do this. Either way I think I want to though, I know there will probably be no pro tuners in my area for quite awhile, so this is probably the next best thing. And then when ATR comes out hopefully I can fine tune and tweak my various maps.

I'd be interested, but not until spring.

I dont think ATR is coming out, I think ATP is whats coming out, which costs 10s of thousands of dollars and is for pro tuners.

I'm 100% down on dropping $150 for a remote tune via e-mail and datalog's. Would love to have the ATR software so I could hop on this! Hopefully they will update us on more concrete information and maybe even release date of ATR!

I've been in line for a few weeks now for an e-tune. From conversations with them (the sales guys) it sounds like they want to move you to the idea that you'll get what Tim thinks you need, then if it needs fine tuning with logs and all that, they'll back up the tune.

I'm not pushy though, so someone else might get a different response. I didn't get the impression that this is an ongoing program for the ms3, more like a good idea and let's see if we get any takers. They're not that familiar with our car, being, like most, a subie shop essentially. So the program may work well with subies, but not with us?

I'm just waiting to see what they do and how they respond once I get anything (they have my card number.)

In person, sure. I'm talking about the e-tune program. And I was talking to the sales guys, not Tim or the mechanics. There's obviously a large experience base for subies, but little for us. It sounds like Tim is my kind of guy though, so I'm hoping for the best and waiting patiently.

LBV, Tim I believe was out of town tuning down south. Anyway we also got dumped on with snow/ice so much of the city was shut down. Give them a call. I'm sure they are willing to assist.

I e-mailed surgeline tuning over 2 weeks ago about the same thing and no response ... will do it myself when the software comes out from Cobb.

I gather you load them to the ap.
However, how do you tweak them with the ap?

I hold 18 psi in 4th and 19 psi for a good part of 5th with the Cobb maps, and I don't think you're going to do any better with just an intake. Since I don't have a dyno in the garage there's no way to know what tweaking the spark and fuel does power wise, so e-tuning with anyone is pointless at this time for output seems to me. What I want is the output of the Cobb maps, but with better throttle control. My guess is that the on/off nature of the power, boost spiking and low rpm cuts are all tied together, so fix one and you fix them all. We'll see.

Now if the AP had a timer tied to pedal position, maybe we could do it. It should be easy to do, and a 4th gear pull might be good enough to show differences in power. It would basically be a 50-100 mph run, and if the user could do it consistently, enough of a gain to matter might show up in the times.

I haven't run the g map for weeks. My car was unhappy with the 103 maps in general, no idea what was wrong, but I opened the hood a few times, started at it and it started running better So I switched to the j fmic map. Then I got the surgeline map. Now I'm running the 103r map to compare to the surgeline. I've got a lot of thinking to do, getting tired of screwing with maps, and not sure which direction to take.

But when I was running the g fmic, yeah, that's what it did for psi. My car always meets and usually exceeds the Cobb map boost targets.

Yeah you have a point. I'm amazed he does it too and sometimes I wonder if he even remembers what he did to the previous calibration LOL. I didn't know what you meant by personal attention I thought you meant to be an attention whore, my bad.

It's a very basic map, no where near as developed as the Cobb maps. But that makes sense, with all the work Christian has done and all the feedback he gets. Now that I've got Tim's email I'll hopefully be talking to him directly, so we'll see how it goes.

I wrote Tim and told him I wasn't really interested in developing a map from scratch - just doesn't make sense to me with the Cobb maps available. He replied that he was happy to tweak my Cobb map, so just to get things started I sent him a v103r, a pic of a DH log and my notes on what I thought I wanted. I figure I can make all the AP logs he needs later.

What I'm after is part throttle boost control and the cuts I think are associated with it being too hyper. If that goes well, next would be the "false KR" issue - see what he thinks about it. I did mention the "cold cut" issue to see if he had any input.

That's where I'm at - waiting now for the tweaked 103r.

Am I the only one that hopes Tim can create a hotter more aggressive map than the v103's? I mean, I like the 103's but I'd like a map that takes stg2 to the limit. Personally, I'm not worried about driveability. If I need it to be docile, I'll stay out of boost (not easy w/ the tiny k04).

I was also hoping he could do something for the bigger turbo guys. I'd love to slap a 3071 on the car W/O building the motor... It just seems so crazy to me that these engines can't take a turbo upgrade. It's ridiculous really.

Hell, I'd even like to see Tim do some work with SST and re-worked k04's. If I could have a fully bolted and re-worked turbo putting out 310-320 whp w/ a mean & fat powerband, I'd be very happy.

I'm hoping 2009 will be a great year for the MS3.

I think pdximportracer has cobb front mount, and all cobb exhaust and put down almost 350 hp.

that must be new...maybe 350 crank. I think you're mistaken. I've watched his progress pretty closely for some time now and I don't recall seeing him break 310whp.

Just drive on out there, I'm sure he'd do whatever you want. For me, I don't see how you could tune to the edge through email unless you had unlimited free time on a local dyno. My long-term idea is check out Tim and the business with the e-tune -> do meth -> try a S2+ map in my S1+ car -> think about driving out there for a full tune. I like to take baby steps, one thing at a time.

Found this link. I believe is he up there though. When I talked to him last maybe he said it was at that now. I just stopped by the shop a few weeks ago and he was at the shop. Can't remember. Even 320tq is good to me as in this link is nice.

Here is another one at 305 but fuel pump couldn't keep up. PDXimportracer has an upgraded pump so I would think he is over this number.

Ah I see....yea, I remember those threads. I even posted in the first one. Awesome numbers for sure but a far cry from 350 whp.

Yeah, I'm going to be real curious what you can come up with tuning for meth on a S2 car/stock turbo/no meth failsafe.

I think about meth like I've already got it, and I don't even know what system to get yet But what I come up with is if you don't failsafe it (and I don't want to anyhow) then you can't go too far. Unless you want to carry the AP everywhere you go, you'd have to have a tune where you can safely drive it, even if you "forget" your meth failed. Hmmm ...

So you got fuel, spark and boost. If you're an AP car, your fuel is already leaned out pretty good compared to stock. Spark, well, a few degrees more advance, but that's not going to make a lot of difference. Boost - I could just run a S2 map and get my 20 psi on a S1 with meth, but you'd have to go what, 22-23?

That's where I get confused thinking about it. Meth lowers your BAT, but that's after the turbo, so any stress on the turbo from excess boost is still there with meth, right? I don't know. the stock turbo is just as hot, with whatever issues that brings up, with meth or without if I'm thinking about it right.

I'm lucky with a S1 in maybe I can bump boost (with a race pipe and meth.) I like the idea of meth making all the performance that's there available all the time.
