Easy answer? Leave it alone.

Looks like rust is forming underneath, prob from a rock chip and moisture getting under there.

Going to have to sand and re paint, if you mess with it the way it is you will prob flake off the paint. Sucks

edit - Raider might have a point, isnt there a rust waranty?

It is probably a "rust through" warranty. Meaning that Mazda will not touch it until there is a hole through the body panel, and by that time you will have gone past the 100,000 mile mark. Oh, and if you happen to have a hole due to rust, Mazda will say they do not cover it because it was caused by an outside environmental influence (AKA a rock that impacted the hood). My advice, find a good body shop, and pay them cash to fix it, you will usually get a better deal.

Its a 2007 and I still have 2 years of warranty or 60 000KM still...

I dont see any rock chips on there at all... i mean I see some minor ones and one had been touched up by previous owner (he told me) but this just seems like a bubble forming under the paint... im sure if i chip it it will be rust. There isnt anything under the hood in that area...

however when i do open the hood i do see some minor bubbles forming in other spots. The car however seems fine besides the hood.

Anyone know for sure if this would be covered? I guess I could always contact my dealer but then id be having totake of intake and its just a pain... but i would do it if need be.

Its not a big deal to take off but I would have to take the time and do it and find all the oem parts. I know the previous owner and he bought the car new. He said he touched up one rock chip himself and it wasnt in that area. So I am almost certain it wasnt repainted.

I probably wouldn't even bother with if it is oem paint. If you took it to a body shop, they are going to want to paint the surrounding panels to blend it, and in most cases, I'd rather have oem paint with a small bubble than a half assed paint job on the entire front of my car.

Sorry to be negative, but there simply aren't many painters who can lay a factory quality paint job, and that is a small spot not worth taking a chance, imo.

Actually I have never felt an aluminum hood before (that I know of)... My automotive experience is limited to my car and my friends cars and everything I know has come from taking them apart and putting them back together (a lot), not scratching off paint to see whats underneath.

In hind sight I guess that was kind of a stupid post considering I could have educated myslef with a quick google search, but still...

Fuck I also misspelled besides!

I guess the only honorable thing left for me to do is swallow this little cyanide pill I've been saving for just such an occasion...

Sorry to be negative, but there simply aren't many painters who can lay a factory quality paint job, and that is a small spot not worth taking a chance, imo.
It isnt really visible but you know when its your own car you notice those details... I will take a better picture tomorrow without the flash. Matching that color and clear perfectly wouldnt be an easy job so I guess I will just sit on it.

And for Kingston Mazda I dont deal with them unless I really need to... i plan on going big turbo by the end of summer so dealing with them wont happen really.

Thx for replies guys.

lmao.

It's actually a good point though....why DIDN'T Mazda give us an aluminum hood?
My 350z and s2000 both had aluminum hoods. No reason Mazda didn't other than cheap bastards.

Because we have a ton of shit that mounts to our hoods and aluminum is expensive. Remember, Mazda sucks lol.

The secret to Evos (before the X) being so light is that almost every body panel and floor pan is made of aluminum.

Yeah my speed6 is doing the same thing, I got a few, it sucks but i try and hide it with wax, the front bumper doesn't hold up well with the paint as well rock chips and looks like the clear coat peels too, I took some touch up paint and made it look as good as I can, if not from long maybe later on have to get the car painted and have it done right and not so chicken shit from factory.

Yeah, so my 06 is doing the same thing along the front edge of the hood.

I couldn't stand it looking like shit anymore so I decided to wet sand it down to at least get the rust out so I didn't end up with a hole there. To my surprise I get it opened up and it's the grand fucking canyon in there.

Looks like it was a crappy contaminated weld that rusted it's self from the inside out.

I brought it to a guy I know and he said its 150 bucks just to mix the paint... second it would have to bed wet sanded or sand blasted and if it goes through they wont want to touch it (i can see rust under in same spot) so it will probly pierce through.

He said if he fixed it he would have to spread paint and it probly be 600 to 1000 bucks...

My options are quick fix and then vinyl over the hood - 200$
Find a new hood and have it painted - 1k $$
Buy a carbon hood 1k $$
Have it patched and repaired (could come back) 800$

In such cases the touch-up paint kits really work. I have a bunch of stone chips (like one every 7-8mm) and because I took care of each of them the hood never rusted.

Just keep in mind that the paint from the touch-up kit paints (the Mazda original ones) is a bit soft and you need to be careful when you polish the car or even clay it. On the other hand, because it's so soft, it seals these holes pretty good. But for such big holes I'd still go to a car paint shop (Standox?) and get a bottle of like 1oz of paint with with clear coating and hardener added to it.

Family owns a body shop, I painted cars for a few months, I have the same issues, but on top of that my fenders/quarters are also rusting, and this is in a 07 speed3 driven in chicago area.

I've spoke with dealers, mazda HQ, sent pictures, contacted BBB, with no luck, mazda will not stand by their product. Rust needs to be through the panel, and even then they will claim it's caused by the environment.

The paint is shitty! The rust is actually forming under the paint, which makes me think it was incorrectly prepped, or there was no rust protection applied to the metal. I believe mazda claims to apply rust protection.

So your best bet is to do it yourself, find a good shop to stop it now, the more you wait the more it spreads. Make sure the shop has been in the business for a while and will warranty their work.

Good luck!
