Default ATR Win8 Problems

I just got a new laptop over the weekend, and it has Windows 8 on it. While I am not completely sold on Windows 8 yet, I figure I would give it a chance. But, I cannot for the life of me get ATR to install. It won't see the AP. I installed AP Manager first and it installed the drivers, and everything works. But, when I close out of AP manager and start the install of ATR the AP disconnects from the computer and the ATR installer doesn't try to reinstall the drivers and it won't continue the install process.

Has anybody had any luck getting ATR to install on Windows 8? If so how?

Thank you

Same here, I believe it is just a driver issue for the AP.

Same here as well. Probably just a driver issue because as I understand it Win 8 isn't THAT much different from Win 7 underneath.

Just found this on Cobb's forums. I'll give it a shot when I get home around 1.

I tried this, and it does work for AP manager to install and the AP to be recognized as long as AP Manager is running. But when you close AP Manager the AP disconnects as well.

I am thinking that Cobb needs to update the Driver Install package in the ATR Install app the same way that they did for the AP Manager Install app.

So you're saying ATR works as long as APM is open? Good enough fix for me until Cobb releases a new version.

No, even if APM is open ATR still won't see the AP as plugged in. I think what is happening is that the ATR installer is over writing the drivers that are installed by APM. Cause after you try to install ATR you have to go back and reinstall APM to get the drivers to work again.

FWIW-
I upgrade installed win8pro over win7, not as a new install.

-this was prior to any Cobb released win8 drivers being pushed, beta or otherwise
-both APM & ATR worked on first click with no changes
-the beta release of APM including the signed win8 driver installed & worked perfect

AFAIK, neither apm or atr will work on Win8 RT

I have an Asus Slate (Asus Eee Slate EP121) and touch as an interface is working well, selecting multiple cells & such is easy and works well. Also in Excel for logs.

Would you be bummed if I said it looks exactly the same as it does on Win7

cause, well, it does...

Mostly I like how easy it is to use in the car compared to a normal laptop, and the Dashboard functionality of ATR is total WIN. Enough so that I sold the DH

Edit to add- I'll start a new post on it with some screen shots such over the weekend. I've been meaning to do that just cause of the slate -vs- laptop thing.

I got it working with Access Port Manager 2.0.2.3 and Access Tuner Race 2442. I had to disable code signing for device drivers. If you remember when installing on Windows 7, Windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software and you had to click install this driver software anyways.

Try at your own discretion:

To get that prompt in Windows 8, I had to run these commands from an administrative command prompt (on the start screen type cmd, right click on it, and at the bottom of the screen select Run as administrator):

BCDEDIT /Set LoadOptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS

BCDEDIT /Set TESTSIGNING ON

I also ran gpedit.msc (can type from start screen) and navigated to User Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Driver Installation |

Double click on "Code signing for device drivers" and set it to Disabled.

Then I restarted my PC and was able to install Access Port manager and Access Race Tuner.

I couldn't get this to work with Windows 8 Home. But it got me to thinking. After some serious google searching, there is a way to turn off Driver Signing checks temporarily in the home edition. It just only works until you restart the computer again. I just did this and was able to get ATR to install.

Here are the directions to temporarily disable the signed driver check.

To get started:

From the Metro Start Screen, open Settings (move your mouse to the bottom-right-corner of the screen and wait for the pop-out bar to appear, then click the Gear icon).
Click ‘More PC Settings’.
Click ‘General’.
Scroll down, and click ‘Restart now’ under ‘Advanced startup’.
Wait a bit.
Click ‘Troubleshoot’.
Click ‘Advanced Options’
Click ‘Windows Startup Settings’
Click Restart.
Profit!

When your computer restarts, select ‘Disable driver signature enforcement‘ from the list. (number 7) You can now load your modified driver.

Once you have done this you can click on the installer for ATR and it will proceed just like it did in Windows 7. A pop up box will ask you if you trust the driver and such, you will click install anyways. ATR will install just as planned.

Now restart you computer and everything should work. I now have ATR and APM working and my AP connecting to my laptop.

Thank you all for your help and ideas!

So, from what I've been told, the current "solution" is to update APM to "Beta". This should allow you to connect the AP via ATR. You'll need to have APM and ATR open together.

Let me know if this fixes it.

With the Beta APM installed I'm able to use ATR in the car with full connectivity to the AP- dashboard gauges & logging, without APM open.

I've attached the only shot I've got just for giggles, I left it full res so you can see the APM icon at the bottom is not active, and the green connection box.

My car is going in today to see about getting the TC/VVT done before I cross 70K, so won't be able to get good screenshots of the working system till I get it back...

I tried all the steps listed here and I still wasn't able to install ATR. I found this alternate method to install on the Cobb forums.

Reinstall the AP Manager and verify the AP can connect to it. Next, download 7zip and install it. Right click the ATR installer and open it with 7zip. Extract the license.ini and tunerRaceXXX.exe.

Create a directory C:\Program Files (x86)\AccessPORT\AccessTUNER Race

Put the license.ini file in C:\Program Files (x86)\AccessPORT\AccessTUNER Race.

Right click the tunerRaceXXXX.exe and open it with 7zip. Extract the contents to a temporary directory. Put the files not in any subdirectory in to C:\Program Files (x86)\AccessPORT\AccessTUNER Race.

Open the docs directory in the temp folder. Move the DLL files and DOCS directory in that docs directory to C:\Program Files (x86)\AccessPORT\AccessTUNER Race;

Open the plugins directory in the temp directory. You will find another plugins directory. Move it to C:\Program Files (x86)\AccessPORT\AccessTUNER Race.

Open the XML directory in the temp directory. You will find another XML directory. Move it to C:\Program Files (x86)\AccessPORT\AccessTUNER Race.

Create a shortcut on your desktop to the tunerRaceXX.exe file in C:\Program Files (x86)\AccessPORT\AccessTUNER Race.

After doing all that I was able to run ATR normally.

so you essentially just extracted the program files to the needed locations and voila- instant ATR?

Handy. I had wondered if it wrote any files to the registry, but suspected not since it won't associate with PTM files, or open them without license errors.
