Default COBB Front Mount Intercooler Kit for Gen2 MAZDASPEED3




COBB Tuning is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the COBB Front Mount Intercooler (FMIC) for the 2010-2012 MAZDASPEED3. Based on feedback received from MAZDASPEED3 enthusiasts, the development of this Gen2 MAZDASPEED3 FMIC focused on three specific areas; high-efficiency, outstanding build quality and excellent fitment. The final product is a tidy package that fits symmetrically in the front radiator opening, retains the stock crash-structure and has a thermal efficiency of over 80% through most of the rev-range with a maximum pressure-drop of less than 0.75psi at 21psi of boost.


This performance is achieved through attention to detail in selecting components for this kit backed by extensive testing. The 24”x6.5”x3.5” aluminum core with cast-aluminum end-tanks is extremely efficient while creating as little restriction as possible. 2.5” mandrel-bent aluminum tubing carries pressurized air to and from the intercooler and feature formed ends to eliminate hose blow-off. Five-ply silicone couplers and stainless steel t-bolt clamps are used throughout to further ensure reliable, leak-free joins.


The fitment of the COBB Gen2 MS3 FMIC kit was just as rigorous as ensuring its high performance. This kit fits with the stock crash-bar in place, retaining factory passenger safety. The kit bolts into place with no cutting of the front bumper cover and only simple and straightforward trimming of the front undertray is required. Custom brackets allow perfect fitment in the tight confines behind the front bumper cover.


The appearance of the COBB Gen2 MS3 FMIC is second to none, once again due to attention to detail. The intercooler core is visually striking, positioned dead-center in the bumper-cover opening, with polished cast end-tanks and laser-etched COBB logos. The intercooler piping is powdercoated in a dark gray and includes integrated brackets with the COBB “C” logo. The five-ply silicone couplers also bear the COBB logo and are available in blue or black to best match your existing engine bay modifications.


The COBB Gen2 MS3 FMIC is supported with AccessPORT Off-The-Shelf maps for intercoolers and a variety of other power-producing modifications. Simply install the COBB Gen2 MS3 FMIC kit, select an appropriate map from the extensive Mazda AccessPORT Off-The-Shelf Map Database, flash the ECU and go experience heat-soak-free power. Over and over and over! The COBB Gen2 MAZDASPEED3 FMIC is the ultimate combination of performance, quality and attention to detail.

I wouldn't worry too much about bat's on the sauce.

Not that charge cooling isn't important, but much less so with e85.

@Evan@COBB... Any idea as to the cfm this core will flow?

I have not flow tested these cores with the endtanks on them, so I can't tell you for sure. However, I wouldn't hesitate at all to run this core to the 400 HP range.

I tested Bell's 24"x6"x3.5" (1615 CFM rating) core and found similar efficiency with a smaller pressure drop on the core that I've chosen for this project. Granted, I believe those numbers to be without endtanks.

A good flowing K04 in the dead of winter will do 300g/s at sea level which is about 500 cfm as rfinkle pointed out. 400whp requires somewhere in the 650+ cfm region.

Seeing less than 1psi drop WITHOUT given the flow amount doesn't mean much. A GT35 will flow a lot more at 20psi than a K04 and then pressure drop across the core will be a lot larger. I assume the above test is using the flow of a stock K04.

If that's the case, the IC is quite efficient for a K04 turbo and well suited. I like the shortened piping. I would consider going bigger than this if pushing above 380-400whp which coincides with stock fuel system limits.

I might have reason to upgrade from my Corksport TMIC eventually. I love my setup, but the only thing that stopped me from going FMIC was the stock crash bar replacements. This negated that

Looking @ those graphical representations of the hard data, this looks like an excellent fmic.

I usually see companies boast a pressure drop of <2 psi, and this core has <.75 psi.

CorkSport 24x6x3.5 with really long piping...$874 (powder coated black of course)

COBB 24x6.5x3.5 with normal piping....$1.095

I think it's worth the $221 more for the COBB, I love CS products but I think have the best design when it come to "Keep your crash bar FMIC"

@Evan@COBB how is the clearance past the High side ac line on the front of the engine?? my current FMIC sits against the High side AC line and melted a whole. just curious if you had the piping routed differently or if you made it so that it clears the high side line
