I know it's made champion labs... I saw a great YouTube video of a breakdown of the filter and compared to other champion lab filter (unused) ten I watched a YouTube video often breakdown of a use royal purple filter and the person in the video reported that after 10k the filter felt as if it was made of cardboard and looked like it didn't filter very well... I'm just wondering if anyone personally use a royal purple synthetic filter???

The PureOne still smacks the planet. Racing filters are a different story because they need high flow rates.

To be honest, I can't see why we haven't done a remote oil filter kit with the biggest PureOne available. *shrugs*

I just chopped open a Bosch filter (Bosch 3330 Premium FILTECH Oil Filter).

It IS a purolator pureONE filter. The only difference is the gasket is a black rubber and the pure one has the orange treated one. I am kinda relived because I have a dozen of them here and started to think I has some crappy filters because of the assholes above who made shit up about it being from an inferior manufacturer.

Also, you can get these for $5.50 on Amazon and they are eligible for Prime free shipping. Make sure you get the FILTECH one, I have no idea what is inside of the other one.

Purolator is a Bosch product and has been since 2006.

I am running K&N about 3 times the size of the mazda spin on. It rubs a lil with the tub though. This is the only pic I could find.

Raider likes this.

You fuckers are all wrong. Everything is made by a 12 year old boy in a dirt-floor factory in China. The only difference is the Wal Mart house brand "Great Value" is just a can of Fanta with the lid cut off, and stuffed with straw.

So for the 1st gen users, do you recommend to get the spin-on oil filter conversion kit?
I'm currently using Royal Purple 5w-40 with the OEM oil filter but I already got the spin-on oil filter conversion kit, I'm just wondering if I should take the chance and change to a different oil/filter when installing the kit.

I use a spin on for simplicity and higher filter surface area but I don't think it's really needed if you are going to change filters every 3-4K miles.

That statement was more toward the companies that make multiple grades of filters for the same application (Gold, Silver, Platinum, premium, premium plus etc.).

I prefer/recommend the silicon valve over the rubber. Wix, no doubt, makes a good filter.

I have seen a few kits have problems sealing, creating leaks and another point of failure. I do like the spin ons for the same reason as Tomas, and have to agree wit him, if you keep up on your oil changes and don't leave the filter in there long enought to get clogged with crap you should be fine. There still (as far as I have seen) have not been any real improvments on the cartridge style filters.

If you live in a really dusty area, or stretch out the changes a little bit longer than you should it might be a good idea, due to the increaced capacity and better filtering of a spin on.

Nobody seems to care about the pressure gain/loss that results from using a non-OEM filter. What has been said about the STP/Fram filters is correct, but in the end, when it comes down to judging by filter media (Mobil 1 as an example has a LOT of it) folks don't realize what that can do to the oil pressure that the engine is expected to operate under.
I've always used OEM Mazda oil filters for my 400whp RX7 and they've served me very well. Additionally, if you happen to come in and have warranty-related engine work done, they may say "well, you used XYZ brand oil filter, it doesn't have the same specs/ degree of protection as our OEM, and we won't cover your repairs." You will be hard-pressed to showcase that the XYZ brand filter is better without going through some scientifically challenging experiments (which will include oil pressure as one of the criteria).
Just my two cents.

I have used Carquest spin on filters since I got the car. From what I remember the inside was orange. Are these filters ok to use?

You should be ok with carquest. Take a pic of the bottom and post it up, or if you are feeling friskey, buy 2 and take one apart for science!

I think we've done a good job covering which filters are well made but I'd really like to hear more about the effect they have on oil pressure and flow rates, and if this is something that needs to be strongly considered with our motors.

Just my two cents.

Dunno waht was your mileage, but I did VVT change by recall/warranty this summer and dealer asked only for receipts for oil change and those from my mechanic have only generic "5W-40 oil + filter" line and were accepted just fine.

My Dad told me a couple years back that Consumer Reports rated Toyota's OEM filters were among the best available. No idea who makes them or if they have a suitable one for our application. Anyone else heard about this or know more? I can tell ya, with 120,000 miles on my Mom's V6 Camry, the one thing she's never had a problem with is the engine or its performance.

Consumer Reports is a fucking nutswinger magazine. I wouldn't listen to a damn word they say about cars.

P.S. my Lincoln has 470,000+ miles on the original engine, and my dad always used FRAM filters. Doesn't mean I'd fucking use them.

Great info!
I'm one of those guys that uses fram oil filters. I have 105k miles on my 10' ms3. I've used fram w/mobile1 since day one. After reading this thread I'm switching to Napa gold. I did not know how crappy fram filters are.

Default Oil is covered, NOW what is the best oil filter?

I don't know if I've already posted this in here or not, but FWIW I have a GenJuan spin-on conversion and run a larger-than-stock Motorcraft FL-400S filter. I had to trim the undertray slightly to get it to fit.

Anyone see the new Fram in town?

That's right, I just said a dirty word.
BITOG like it, tho O_O

It's a revamped XTragard or w/e the fuck they called them:
FRAM Oil Filters and Air Filters - Choose your region | FRAM®

Dual layer synthetic media reinforced with a durable metal screen to deliver up to 15,000 miles of engine protection.2
99% Dirt Trapping Efficiency 1
Traps and holds more than double the dirt of leading economy oil filter brands 1
Silicone anti-drainback valve holds a reserve of oil in the filter to help protect the engine during start-ups

Advanced Oil Filter Media Gives The FRAM Advantage

With an ideal balance of dirt-trapping efficiency and dirt-holding capacity, every FRAM oil filter uses filter media with a special blend of fibers and resin providing excellent engine protection.

The most commonly used filter media is cellulose, which is a natural material that presents a random and irregular field of fibers to the oil. By itself, it can only deliver about 80% dirt-trapping efficiency.
By adding microscopic synthetic fibers, small windows are created that trap the smaller dirt particles without affecting the flow of oil. Blending synthetic fibers with cellulose increases a filter’s dirt-trapping efficiency and its dirt-holding capacity for higher levels of engine protection and longer filter life.

FRAM Group testing of average filter efficiency and dirt holding capacity using FRAM XG3387A, XG8A, and XG4967 and their leading economy filter model equivalents under ISO 4548-12 for particles > 20 microns.
Follow recommended change intervals as noted in your vehicle's owner's manual. 15,000-mile change interval under normal driving conditions using fully synthetic motor oil.
From what I can see, they're well-made, have a high-capacity and are still considered Unicorn Jizz at your local WalMart.

I'll do a UOA on one sometime if I can find one.

^ been using the Fram XG series filters since 1,000kms. No complaints and is pretty heavy. Feels like a decent product but no analysis ever done

No, not the original XG. The Purolator PureOne > OGXG.
However, the new one is a different story.
