Did my oil change today. Ran a PureOne filter (after reading this thread) last change that I chopped open today. I never knew about theses differences discussed here and have been running all types of filters in the past (without issues) and all seemed to have the rubber gasket that stuck to the plate like a mofo. Sure enough, my dremel went through the PureOne like butter and it was noticeably easier to remove due to the treated gasket.

I picked up a Bosch Distance Plus D3330. From looking inside I can see that the valve is silicone, the gasket is treated, and it comes with a coil spring instead of a leaf spring. I'll open this one up next time and post pics.

Thanks for the informative thread.

One thing I wonder about is the bypass psi value on these "equals" vs the oem filter which I havent found anywhere. In the subaru world this is critical as they have much higher than normal rates and a lot of the cross referenced filters published don't have the correct bypass psi value. I just ordered up a spin on conversion but without knowing what the correct bypass psi is, I'm a bit nervous about going with anything other than an OEM filter. Is it the normal 8-11 psi or is it higher for the turbo motor?

6 years of using these products has proven that they work. No need to reinvent the wheel here.

I dont doubt that they work but my concern is that using a filter with a lower than spec bypass psi will open the valve prematurely, say during a cold start or WOT for example, which causes a no-filtering situation. You'd never know it was happening. Not once that I've seen from all of the threads I've read lists what the OEM filter bypass valve psi value is... I may be nitpicking here a little but I find it interesting that no one seems to be concerned with this especially considering how prone these motors are to getting dirty oil fast.

I tried the Napa Gold Filter per OP's recommendation. It does look as high quality as you say. It's a bit smaller than my last filter (K&N) but I change my oil every 3000 miles so that's no biggie. I've religiously used K&N since I respect the hell out of that company and can get them pretty cheaply. I don't mind changing it up to another quality product.

Also, after reading the OP I decided to inspect my K&N, I was expecting to see a rubber valve and leaf spring but when I looked inside I was surprised to see a coil spring and a silicone valve. Guess they've changed that since you wrote this. Might be worth noting.

Mann filters are good, been using them on my Audi/VW's for a long time, for those motors it is preferred.

In case anyone wants to see how much bigger the WIX 51516 filter is compared to the OEM size, here you go.

Do the spin on conversion if it doesn't have it already, and just use the wix/napa gold filters for a Mazda 3.0 V6 and never worry about it again. More oil and filtration capacity.
