Default SWAS - DISCONNECT ON A GEN2

Thanks to @Dano for his writeup. It inspired me to take some pics after doing mine so some of the Pus can know what time it is.
Dano thread for gen1: http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...disable-90739/

This how-to is an extension of the one done by @harryclay so props to him. Heres his thread: SWAS on 2010

1st step: Disconnect negative battery terminal. Pump the brakes a few times to drain all remaining power from the system.

Heres the view on approach.

I only undid the 2 screws underneath the steering wheel and bent them far enough out of the way to get to shit. Use the tilt/telescope and bring the wheel out as far as it will go. This allows the two peices to come farther apart and give you more than enough room to work to get it done.

Heres the area you will be working around.

Undo the little thingy for that holds up the wires. This is to give you more room to work. I found it to be necessary and since it takes 3 seconds...wtf not?

There it is disconnected. Also notice i kept the white harness underneath the yellow harness disconnected to allow more room to work. This probably was unnecessary but fuck it.

This is Harryclay's picture. Shows what the connector looks like disconnected. It is almost impossible to take a good picture of it. But heres the best description i can give you to disconnect it:
1) Use the flathead to undo the latch that keeps it connected. You will come from the left side(engine side) and get it at just the right angle to unlatch it.
2) Use needle nose pliers to grip the connector with your right hand.
3) Simultaneously unlatch the connector with the left hand and wiggle it downward with the right hand.
it will pop out pretty easily.

Note the two yellow lights on the dash that will now be permanantly illuminated. TC/DSC can not be toggled on or off. It is permanantly off. Do this mod at your own discretion.

Tools used. 10mm wrench was to disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Then tuck it back under and button everything up.

Afterwards I went for a drive. Upon returning into my hood i turned the wheel and launched it. It spun...a lot...so there you go. No more traction control and no more SWAS nanny.

I'm gonna go out and do this now. I disconnected it a while back but put it back, but I think I'll try running it for a little longer after reading Dano's post.

in before random airbag deployment.

thanks for looking into it for gen2s. im sure theres an easy enough way to provide constant voltage to the sensor so it thinks the wheel is straight all the time, i just dont have the skillz to do it. yet.

At very slow speeds (idle in first gear) if you turn one way then the other the power steering will cut off for a second. If you push in clutch or gas, it kicks back in. This is the ONLY time this occurs, and IMO is not bad (steering just gets heavy but still easy to control).

This is a very simple how to:

1) look around and find two screws on the bottom of the steering wheel column (remove them and never put them back in so you can help some fool in like 2 seconds on msf)

2) pick a wire and pull it out (don't start with the big scary green harness)

3) check how car behaves and if your turn signals or controls don't act normally, choose again

4) when you get two warning lights and your traction control button no longer functions (it is just off now, at least for me) you are done

but, if you want to do it right the first time, pull the wire in the pic below... use the bottom set of wires in that wire bundle for a guide

I dunno about those lights but i dont give a fuck as long as its not a CEL

And its worth a shot to see if you can brake boost. Although I would bet they are separate systems.

But give it a shot and report back

There might be a better way to fix this coming soon...

I have been testing a fix from Cobb this weekend trying to eliminate the SWAS rich condition through tuning instead of unplugging the sensor. Prior to the fix I was randomly seeing WOT AFRs in the 9s for the entire run and now its gone. I do not know what they changed I'll try to find out more. From what I gathered it's a table exposed in the latest version of ATR but not visible to the end user. I'm hoping this makes it into the next beta release as it seems to have cured my problems.

Next up is testing the display and logging of boost > 22PSI on a 3 bar MAP for Gen2s.
Bucker, rfinkle2 and neofandango like this.

I'm not 100% positive but I think it's more like the commanded max enrichment table giving you the ability to set AFR during certain conditions. I'll keep digging and let you guys know.

You can not log over ~22.6 PSI using the AP. I know. I have a 3 BAR MAP, but it didn't change that.

Hey guys try this out and see if it helps with your rich condition. The guys at Cobb let me know what they changed in ATR. I thought the tables were not exposed in ATR but they are available. Below is what they sent me when I was asking about what they did to correct my issue.

In the latest release of ATR (Shifting Control Tables):

Set Ignition Timing Limit (Min) (Throttle Closed) and (Throttle Open) to -3.0 (Stutter Fix)
Set all Load Based and Load/RPM Based Fuel Compensations to 1.0 (Post Shift Fueling Fix)

I have been running my car all weekend without a single rich condition. Attached is what prompted me to contact them. The "WOT 9s" file would occur randomly once every 10-15 WOT runs.

I will update you guys in a few days on the Boost > 22. Waiting on the Alpha fix...
Attached Files
File Type: csv WOT 9s.csv (5.0 KB, 39 views)
File Type: csv WOT Clean.csv (6.1 KB, 39 views)
rfinkle2 and eppopipe like this.
