| Not Ranked : 0 score 70-80 foot pounds and you're fine. Don't over torque, because that will lead to more problems even if you don't strip the lug.

| Not Ranked : 0 score Speaking as an engineer, the torque spec (+/- 20lb/ft) in the manual is pretty useless. The good thing about such specs is that there's plenty of "slop" designed-in. I wouldn't exceed the spec'd range, though (such as 90 lb/ft) since you risk over-stretching the stud and possibly causing deflection of the brake disk. For what it's worth, I checked my lugs and found that they were torqued to 80 lb/ft. I have no idea if the factory or the port or the dealer set them, but they're within the specified range. 80 is a nice round number, so I'm sticking with it. Hope this helps...

| Not Ranked : 0 score I have always torqued the lug nuts on all of my vehicles @ 75 FT/LBS. I also always brush a little white grease or a quick spray of silicon grease on the threads of the lug nuts when ever they have been removed. It's a quick insurance policy to make sure you never have to worry about gauling the threads and even if you slightly overtorque you have less of a change of breaking the stud when you remove the nut. JUST NEVER USE ANTISEIZE ON HIGH TORQUED HARDWARE. It reduces friction and resistance and causes you to over torque.

| Not Ranked : 0 score I agree. For some reason my left side wheels were torqued tight enough that I broke a 3/8" Kobalt breaker bar and the damn nut didn't even budge. I had to use a 1/2" breaker bar with a 3ft long tube to get the damn things loose. I used this same breaker bar to loosen the 150 ft/lbs torqued factory axles on my SRT4. So these lug nuts must have been way over that for me to have snapped it the way I did. After finishing up, I did apply some antiseize on the studs since they were looking a bit rusty and torqued to 85ft/lbs. Some dumbass probably had the impact set to the highest setting and just zipped them on. (Edit) Turns out I was ALSO a DUMBASS for applying Antiseize to my studs. As "ebnash" mentioned already its a terrible idea. Nothing bad came of my situation thus far, but the info posted makes perfect sense. No more antiseize on lugs or studs for me. Glad I learned something new. Thanks. Last edited by SLOWHATCH; 04-19-2011 at 07:03 PM. |
