Default JBR camber arm installed backwards, results in fail

One of my jbr camber arms failed because I wasn't careful and I installed them backwards. Please learn from my mistake. Pay close attention when installing your aftermarket parts. I could have been seriously hurt, could have hurt someone else or worse.

How does that look beat up? Looks new with some grease marks but otherwise fine apart from the break.

i have had my new arms on the car for well over 2 months, i inspect all my aftermarket suspension parts on the regular as well as many locals parts to be sure everything is intact and good working order, it usually takes longer than couple months for the Powder coat to wear like it has. but I could be wrong it was only an observation.

And Jamie is taking care of OP so no worries.

We'll take a look at it when it comes back and send it out for analysis. 2 months is indicative of a material defect not a design defect. We have been using the same material on these for 2 years. We over do all the components we make so I'm not going to jump to conclusions just yet.

I've seen similar bushing sleeve failures on off road trucks when urethane bushings are used. They can act as stress risers and oval out the sleeve eventually causing failure. It sounds like the part is plenty strong when installed correctly.

Is the threaded section welded to the bushing section? If so, it looks like it cracked right along the weld... which could actually be due to the weld IMO:

I'm far from an expert on weld failures (sure i can weld, but i'm still very much a noob at it), but lots of things can contribute to cracks. Not enough penetration, too much penetration, poor shielding on the top, poor shielding on the bottom, contaminated welds, contaminated filler, incorrect filler for a given base metal, too large a HAZ (heat affected zone).... the list goes on. But considering you said you've been using the same tube stock for 2 years, and this is the first time you've seen it fail, that would lead me to think it's the weld more than the material, right?

At least that would be the best case scenario. Cause if it was bad tube stock, and you build XX units from it... that could potentially mean there's going to be XX more failures to occur. Hopefully (and most likely) it's just the weld.

While I would agree that it was a material issue and not a design issue, a thicker tube with a similar defect may not have had the issue. Then again, a tube the same diameter with a different material may have bent instead of cracking.

I will say this- it appears that the material broke in the heat effected zone of the weld.

Very well could be DJ. I'd to speculate until we get it back.

I have already reached out to our supplier, who has a very advanced metallurgical lab and they will be taking a look at the material and the weld for us.

Did you use the instructions for installation? I mean there's not much to mess up...but if you used the instructions I don't know how you could install them incorrectly.

Looks more to me like the weld damaged the integrity of the pipe portion/wall wasnt thick enough and I'm thinking a simple fix as mentioned before is thicker wall which can handle the forces with the weld joint better.

Did you remove them yourself from the car and where was the adjustable portion of the arm located? It sounds to me like you did not install them correct?

Thank You for your honesty!

They were installed backwards.

The adjustable portion should have been located at the wheel. I could tell by looking at the bushings and that they made contact on both arms.

There is almost no forces on the outside bushing. The inner bushing takes the load and that's why it's reinforced with additional gusseting.

Looks like we have gotten to the bottom of this quickly....Thank God! and thank God you're OK.

You should add pictures to the how-to Jamie, would probably help avoid this kind of mistake. Good catch.

Don't be embarrassed man for any reason. We've all installed shit backwards, stripped bolts, etc. If you want, I have a list of fail I could send you a mile long of things I've done and had to repair on my Speed. Shit happens seems applicable in this case.

Glad you got this sorted with JBR.

Thanks JBR for being all over this and your continued support for the platform.

I remember trying to give a purdy lil lady a jump start once... Had my buddy with me, which was a mistake. He put the cables on backwards and made me look like a complete ass (although, he didn't know he put the m on backwards). Lost me my date!

in4NewInstructions. Also, I will be ordering JBR shit... love this guy. He put my car in his gallery

I have spoken with the OP the arms where in fact installed backwards. We are grateful for his honesty otherwise, we would have never been able to get to the root cause of the issue.

I also accept responsibly for this because as pointed out, the installation instructions should have been better. We take great pride in our installation instructions and these should have been better.

I am sending a new set out to the OP and I will be updating the instructions today.

I know how sensitive the the community is over camber arms and I would like to apologize for not providing better installation instructions.

Thanks!
