Surging at low RPMS, occur (simply) when the engine is not flowing enough (think exhausting enough or fast enough) for what the turbo is trying to "force" into the engine, causing a significant pressure rise (opposing the compressor flow direction) at the compressor outlet.
Essentially, the turbo is trying to move more air into the engine than the engine is capable to ingest (high PR at the low RPM issue). The housing allows this excess air to be relieved through ports in the compressor housing as opposed to causing huge swings in pressure over the compressor wheels and causing shock waves. This can damage a turbo if left unattended. Anti-surge housings also do not increase compressor efficiency or flow and in some (very few) cases, can actually lower the compressor efficiency by 1 or 2 points. But nothing that is an issue.
Because of the larger size (volume) and the ability of the DI 2.3 engine to flow fairly well at low RPMS (not a volume or flow restriction), IMHO, an anti surge housing for a T3 series Garrett is not a "necessity" on the street. But, that is just my opinion and nothing else.
Thanks for clearing that up. I suppose its just a difference in design of the porting. Id rather buy ported and not need it, then buy ported and fing out I need it.
