Default BlueStreak goes BT

I've been mulling going big turbo for a while and finally decided to pull the trigger. Yesterday afternoon, I gave StreetUnit a call and put in an order for the ATP GT3071R and the Perrin EBCS.

Following @rodrigo's write-up, I ordered some silicone couplers from siliconeintakes.com to complete the package.

I was going to order the CPe Big Turbo Inlet and Big MAF Intake but rumour has it that SURE is coming out with a one piece intake/tip for big turbos so I'll be running my COBB intake with the PG TIP and a silicone reducer in the mean time.

To make things interesting, a few weeks ago, I ordered the Devil's Own Direct Port Meth Injection system and will be installing this along with the SURE TIGs, VTCS and EGR delete. The plan is to run 4xD03 nozzles for a full spray of 12GPH. Of course this could be accomplished with one large nozzle but direct port meth injection sounds too cool to pass up. Haha.

Direct Port setup.

I will post pictures of the turbo as soon as it arrives.

After the install, I will post a detailed write-up on tuning my car with the 3071 along with documenting every fail I encounter in doing so.

Cheers,

Dave

Right on! I'll keep an eye on your build... Curious to see how your meth setup turns out. I'm guessing with a setup like that, you'll be tuning for power with your meth setup?

Good call on the 3071r vs 3076r, IMO. It feels a very similar to the k04, just with a lot more kick.... Although I keep eyeing that FP3076r I have in the garage and I'm tempted to slap on an ATP hot side and bolt it on lol.

Who's doing the install?

The gains are to ensure a somewhat even distribution of w/m to each cylinder. In some communities, meth is frowned upon, because of the inability to distribute the meth through all cylinders under high boost. The evo 4g63 had issues with this. youd get detonation on the last 2 cylinders from being starved from the meth injection. And when i say frowned upon, im just saying that most people dont pony up for a good meth system, and worry about the distribution through the cylinders. Ive heard of tuners and what not that wont touch meth in certain cars. But most of what ive seen with meth are pros! Subie's do well with it, so does the MZR. My old dsm took well to it, but it was injected at the turbo. Ive seen a SRT4 blow because of meth though. Heard horror stories about evos though.

Damn, I've got a meth kit coming next week, what else would I need to convert it to this ... Luckily I have an extra intake manifold too... Not that that would have stopped me.

I'll have one "hail mary" map that will take advantage of the meth with more aggressive timing. If anything, it'll just be used on the dyno. As a DD setup, I will tune on 94 octane then spray meth on top to keep things in check.

Yeah, like you, I went with the 3071 for better spool. I don't want to be noncompetitive in autocross :-)

I have a few friends that will be helping me with the install. I don't expect major issues.

400hp at 20PSI seems doable from what I've seen. Chances are, I will be tuning on a Mustang dyno so the numbers won't be so high. After the tune, I'll see if I can strap it on a dynojet so I can feel better about my car and therefore, myself. Haha.

You can order the direct injection kit here from Devil's Own. You will need to buy appropriately sized nozzles as well. I purchased 3xD03 nozzles and sourced the 4th D03 from the Stage 2 kit.

good shit man!

my concern is about your setup for autox...since autox in this car doesn't involve much high-rpm work like a vtec would, how do you plan to take advantage of direct port meth injection for relatively lower rpm work? I understand you're using DO3 nozzles, but I am trying to wrap my head around the tuning necessary to to keep from bogging in the lower rpm/boost range...

I agree that this will likely produce huge dyno numbers tho! And prevent you from leaning out per cylinder.

Good luck man!

I thought about that. In hindsight, a more complex meth controller would've been a better buy.

Buuuutttt I'll try to get around that as I will be using a hybrid load/boost tune. In other words, I will target a certain load (in second gear for instance) and hopefully, it'll equate to less boost and therefore less meth being sprayed on spoolup.

I hear you about a "more complex controller"...it's almost like you'd want to be able to control it in a table in ATR as per load and boost...maybe even gear based...lol...

idk exactly, but others have used the CP-e Pro-Fuel controller to control meth...

I know the Snow Performance controller can be set up to run off injector pulse width. That would allow you to scale meth according to fueling.

Another idea I had was to hook up the Stage 2 controller to the MAF signal. Assuming they both run on 5v (I know the MAF does and I think the MAP sensor does as well), you can do a quick swap over then use the adjustment knobs to tune onset and full spray. You could then use datalogs to optimize the voltages.

I haven't noticed bogging in low RPMs. The progressive controller I have starts spraying at 8psi and reaches max flow at 20psi. It's meant NOT to bog the motor...hence the "progressive."

On a 100* day here in TX, with this meth setup, the car pulls just as hard as when it's 60* outside (which is basically only 1-2 months out of the year).

I'm referring specifically to autox...where a progressive controller wouldn't do anything to help...when you want quick spool on, helped by hotter exhaust gas...where you also are never on the throttle long and hard enough to actually affect the charge.

having said that...if he's tuning for meth and running 100% as a fuel, that will also require a bit of tweaking in the lower rpms/laod where he doesn't even enter OL...

again, I'm referring to specifically autox conditions...not roll racing and hwy pulls.

*MINI UPDATE*
All the BT turbo parts (save for the Perrin EBCS) have arrived in Buffalo, NY. I will be driving down Friday morning to pick everything up and will begin the install at around noon with a few friends. If everything goes well, we should be online by Saturday.

I will be calling around the Greater Toronto Area to get a hold of some dyno time on the Saturday to get this thing singing. It may be difficult as it is a long weekend here (and I believe in the US as well). I will tune the car myself and will post a step-by-step in the MS3/MS6 Tuning section of the forum.

Nudes of the turbo, exhaust side of the engine and associated parts will be posted ASAP.

Good luck with your install. JRP carries (As in stocks) a lot of random fittings (AN, etc), in case you find you missed something.

After two (almost full) days, the turbo was successfully installed in addition to the direct port meth injection, VTCS delete, EGR delete and TIGs install. Now, onto the pictures that matter.

The required comparo of old vs. new, small vs. big. Bigger is better. Ha!

VTCS flappers gone. I kept the switches and associated vaccuum lines to avoid a CEL. I was going to open up the port on the right-hand side but didn't have the right Dremel bit. It was also a long weekend so stores were closed. I'll take care of that next time.

Intake manifold tapped and meth nozzles installed. Those are 4xD03 nozzles giving me the equivalent of 12GPH spray.

One more.

Intake manifold all buttoned up in the engine bay with the meth system hooked up. The downside to running direct port is that the spray occurs AFTER the MAP sensor leaving you with no measurable decrease in BATs. In high heat situations, the ECU may default to the lower timing maps even though meth is spraying. You can also see the IM TIG in this photo.

GT3071R in its new home. I am using the new Perrin EBCS in 3 port mode to manage boost but forgot to take pictures.

Tuning has already begun but I am not done yet; still ironing out bugs. Once tuning is complete, I will post up a thread in the tuning section on the steps I followed to get the motor singing.

I will also be converting my meth injection system from MAP based to MAF based. Stay tuned for a write up on that as well. As it stands, full spray at 20PSI in the 3.5K RPM range nets me some seriously rich AFRs (10.0 or so).

Cheers,

Dave

is there any science behind picking the particular location for the injection? or did you just go closest to mix area?

could you read decreased temps via EGT?

I selected the nozzle location based on clearing my CPe TMIC. I couldn't mount the nozzles any further up as they would make contact with the shroud. It worked out perfectly since I could mount the meth distribution block just behind the hood release and not kink the hoses.

I could read the decrease via EGTs as I do have an EGT gauge inside the car. At any rate, I know its spraying based on the changes in AFRs. I do miss seeing the drop in BATs tho...

Haha.

The TMIC can flow the required air and the meth is more than enough to get BATs as low as they can go.

If I went with a bigger turbo, I'd definitely move to a FMIC but am certain this is fine given the turbo selection.

Did you need to fab up oil and coolant line or was it all ready to go?

No fabbing required. The kit came with everything.

I'll find out.

EDIT: FORZDA1 was able to flow ~350g/s at redline with the ETS (I believe) intercooler and the BNR Stage 3 turbo. I would expect similar results with the CPe unit. Granted, it's not a complete apples to apples comparison since they are different brands. I have emailed Sander in the mean time to get more info on flow rates.

Correct.

In my initial tuning runs, I ran off spring pressure and had no issue with boost creep. Boost stayed at 12-13 PSI until redline.
