Just want to say thanks again to everyone who have helped me out a ton over the past almost 2 years now. Thanks to DJ for making this possible, and thanks to jmhinkle, my mentor from back in the n00b days on 6club, and Skates & Joe for all you've taught me through your posts, and private tutoring via gchat + celly. Thanks to all the BT guys on here that have posted great info and have been helping me out a lot lately... Joel, Skates, Rigor, Tim, Gerry, Brian, Lenny & Skates, Dano + DJ again on tuning. You guys fucking rock!!! I'm sure I'm forgetting some people but I'm liquored up and tired. Just wanted to say thank you, and <3 MSF.

HUGE thanks to Tim (spnkr21) whose helping me w/ the install, and all the other guys that offered their help and may be there as well. NE bros FTMFW!!!

After driving Skate's 76 back in Nov, I was like 76 for sure. Thing is tits. Aside from the super sexy top mount pics Joel has posted (and I've robbed), it was this early video of his car after set up that made me pull trigger with no doubts in my mind (I probably watched this 100 times):

One coupler arrived... wtf, haha. I was missing a couple trinkets that weren't on the list that Joel put together, and he clued me in about them last night:

Some coolant line & a union (coupler for coolant line).
4" T-Bolt clamp for intake
Extra vac line to make it to ewg (had this already)

When I was testing my fmic for leaks, I noticed 3 worm clamps had managed to move in... wtf. So I ordered the big t-bolt, and the three others that escaped. I also ordered 5 new, thicker ply straight couplers to replace the skimpy ass CPE ones from SiliconeCouplers.com - Silicone Couplers | Intercooler Parts | Hose Coupler | Turbo Intercooler. I also ordered 13' of high temp vac line from here: Silicone Hose - Silicone Vacuum Hose Platinum Cured Silicone. Thanks Tim & Skates, respectively, for the links, lol

I wanted to replace all my vac line with some good stuff anyways. I'm fucking done w/ chasing small bs boost leaks. I ordered the couplers + t-bolts this morning, and they already shipped! So, I'll be upgrading those this weekend. Hopefully the vac line will come too so I can do it all at once.

Next I need to get new t-fittings... I may do this later. I want to get all aluminum ones from McMaster's Carr, but I don't know all the sizes, so I'll have to check. I don't like brass... except for my balls, lol

Nothing exciting here... my intake & outlet couplers came, as well as most of my battery tray assembly, lol. Denzo 24s, new couplers for the fmic and new vac line on their way. This is more of a reminder to myself so I don't forget shit.

Still Need:
-2 Mani Bolts 10mm (1.5 pitch) not sure of length. 2 don't fit w/ SteedSpeed Mani, so I can either buy a couple OEM ones and cut them, or get the right length and order them.
-Borrow my buddy's Angle Grinder. WILL need this regardless to chop my hot pipe. I almost forgot!
-Buy more zip ties & T-fittings
-Coolant line and a Union. Not sure what size/length just yet
-Not sure what else, but will know soon -Thanks Joel!

Prep to do before install:
-Cut one ring off of 3-ring prong on neg of battery, and solder the 5 wires into two sets of 2 and 3 wires to remaining two prongs (it's in way to move battery back 1").
-Swap out stock battery tray for new one, and move batter back 1" to clear new intake
-Replace 5 fmic couplers with new ones once they arrive, and replace 3 worm clamps w t-bolts
-Replace all vac line when new stuff arrives
-Cut base map when laptop arrives

I'll be able to do ^that stuff this weekend, pending weather, and getting everything.

Is it just the top mount manifold that doesn't fit with 2 of the stock studs, or is it a design in the flange and a stock mount won't fit either?

Jmhinkle said he shortened one on top where the T3 flange is and the other goes directly below it for the EWG flange. Hang on I'll post the pic he sent me. From the thread I posted asking about the size/pitch of the stock mani studs, it sounds like normal mount SP manis only have 1 in the way, but I can't confirm that.

Well, I think I'm FUCKED. I was looking at Joel's pics, and realized that I don't think the CPE hot pipe will fit with the new intake. It would be super tight at best, and won't know until I have the intake, which is coming soon. I wanted to go custom fmic anyways, but need to scrounge up the loot for the pipes and core (aka family loan, which I hate). So pissed I didn't realize this sooner or I could have planned for it better. I even posted when I got the CPE fmic because I wasn't sure if it would clear the intake... and it just fits.

Maybe a custom pipe will work, but I'm not even sure of that. That would at least be a lot easier (I haz no garage). As soon as I get my mitts on the intake, I can take some measurements and see if it will fit (95% sure it wont), but I'll also be able to see if a funky custom hot pipe will work. <OR> I'll just order the custom fmic pipes + core tomorrow and go custom before install date. I hate borrowing money though.

FUCK!

I was already looking into a custom hot pipe before ($250!) so I wouldn't have to chop the CPE kit, and I could sell it intact. It makes more sense to just do a custom now, but I don't have the time/$/garage. I'll have to look tomorrow to see how I could possibly have that pipe re-routed. Ugh... I'll know some more tom. Thanks for the suggestion!

EDIT: Joel thinks I maaay just clear the hot pipe. The intake does come up a bit higher the the cobb sir/tip. Worst case scenario is the hood won't close = tow it home after install & do custom fmic later when I have time/$. I'd rather have this thing installed and undrivable than put the install on hold. Been too damn long, and need this shit done. Plus, I need to get the stock oil lines back to DJ. I'm ready to cut a hole in the fucking hood at this point, haha

Keep the CPE we'll make it work.
You should save that money for anything else we may run into.

yup, i agree. Keep the CPE.

I dont believe it would cost $250 for a custom hot pipe. that sounds a bit high?

Usually you can get an entire universal piping kit for $200 or less. If you're planning on ditching the CP-e FMIC anyways, why sink more money into it? It basically comes down to whether you want the car NOAW or if you can't stand to wait until you do the custom setup.

Oh and if you look at the 'BIG MOUTH' threads over on mazda6club, you should be able to hammer one of these out in a day in someones drive way.

2 hrs of labor + the pipes... that was the 'high end' of the quote. Shit around here is $$. I know another place I can try that's excellent, but IDK if it'd be much less.

Yup. I was about to go custom when the cpe + hks went up FS for a decent price and I hopped on it. I do want the car NOW, haha. It's more like I have a cpa exam in less than 2 months, and I need the car done so I can focus on that. With shit lingering, I can't concentrate. Sad, but true.

I'm familiar w/ the BIG MOUTH threads over there... iirc both jmhinkle and qwik6 were rocking those, but now Joel is going for a the TR10 as he maxed his out w/ the ts3076 + high boost. I wanted to go w/ a huge custom too, BUT next spring when I have more time, & $. The TR10 will take a lot longer because you have to weld a custom bracket to mount it, cut out most of the crash bar, and then weld it to the frame. I didn't want to go 'medium big' if going custom only to max out the fmic (like Joel did) and then go TR10 later. But thanks for the suggestion though . One thing I'm short of is time... big exam July 14th, so getting signing off & cracking the books!!

EDIT: The other thing is my Cobb TIP has a tear in it. Skates noticed it when we were doing the egr delete. We just put silicone RTV on it, and then electrical tape. Then it was gouging in again (rubbing bottom metal part of PS res), so I had to repair it again, this time w/ epoxy, tape, and tapped a sheet of aluminum on there. SO, that thing is a ticking time bomb, and I'm not buying another tip for a few weeks.

As Ice Cube would say... today was a good day. I got about 4 hours of studying done, which isn't enough, but it's a good start to knock the cobwebs out of my head. However, I was interrupted 3 times this afternoon by the mailman, Fedex, and then UPS, haha. Here are some pics of some of the stuff (couple stragglers are on their way).

As the guys suggested I just picked up some 1" ID radiator hose from Advanced (3' for $5), and I've had the SU upper radiator hose for a year, lol. I may put it in as the hot pipe may need a little more clearance. If I don't I'll just sell it. There's my new battery tray & tie down, and the rods are on their way too. That's a Denzo ITV24 plug in the pic too... the other 3 are on their way:

My Amsoil Filter, 2.25" to 2" outlet reducer and 4" to 3" intake reducer on the left, 4" intake clamp, Jegs Hose Sealant, breather filter, & free Jegs hat center. Hat would be cool if it was different colors. To the right are the 5 2.25" couplers that will replace my current CPE couplers... they are almost TWICE as thick as the ones that came with the CPE kit, and a few worm clamps I was missing.

I order 4 (yes 4) ex mani bolts, and I'll be chopping them up maybe this weekend. For $1/each from ATP, I'd rather have a couple spares in case I mess it up. I'd also like to get as much bs stuff done ahead of time. I'd still prefer to order the correct size that will fit if I get the right length? :/

Still Need:
-3' Coolant Tubing, 3 small hose clamps and a 1/4 barbed house union (Thanks Joel!). I may get these tonight after dinner
-Borrow my buddy's Angle Grinder. WILL need this regardless to chop my hot pipe. I almost forgot!
-Buy more zip ties & T-fittings
-Not sure what else, but will know soon -Thanks Joel!

Prep to do before install:
-Cut one ring off of 3-ring prong on neg of battery, and solder the 5 wires into two sets of 2 and 3 wires to remaining two prongs (it's in way to move battery back 1").
-Swap out stock battery tray for new one, and move batter back 1" to clear new intake
-Replace 5 fmic couplers with new ones, and replace 3 worm clamps w t-bolts (Saturday)
-Replace all vac line when new stuff arrives (Saturday)
-Cut base map when laptop arrives

Is that amsoil for the cp-e big maf?

If so, what's the part #? I don't feel like looking it up.

Thanks

I got the same hat when I got the ARP studs to do my seals with last week.
It was a nice surprise!

I'm not running the cpe big maf.... the intake/sri is custom from Dustin and it's 3.5". I measured the Amsoil cone, and it's 3.5" ID and 4.0" OD... inside is has threads on it (that I'm not using afaik) but here's a shot of it anyways:

Ask DJ if jmhinkle's air filter will work w/ your set up. Here's the part# and link: Amsoil Air Filter #EEAU3650 AMSOILAMSOIL Ea Air Filters - Nanofiber Technology. Just be careful because when that link opens the drop down box defaults to the top filter. You want part #EAAU3560 from the pull down list (if mine/Joel's will work for you).

BT n00b for sure. The only intake I've had is the cobb, and it's not ribbed like the condoms I use to mount you.

I picked up 4' of 1/4" fuel line and two 1/4" barbs, 4' of 5/16" fuel line and two 5/16" unions. That was the closest I could get to coolant line. I also picked up a 10pk of 1/4"-5/16" worm clamps, as well as that big ass tube of assorted zip ties from Autozone. So.... one of those lines should work NP. They don't even stock 1/4" coolant line near me. They said not to use fuel line bc the coolant will eat through it over time, but Joel said it was NP. And that looks like it!!!! I FINALLY HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED!!! The shit that I'm missing has already been ordered and shipped. Expecting the last things to trickle in by Friday. I just need some extra "T" fittings but I already have a bunch in case some break when I'm replacing all the vac line, so not really necessary.

I called my buddy who has a lot of tools, and I'm gonna bring the ex mani bolts to his place this weekend to cut them. He also said to swing by whenever to grab the angle grinder and any other tool I need. This is the same dude that wanted to grind me a set of keys to his house last summer so I could work on my car in his huge driveway when he wasn't home, and use the 50' extension cord for my compressor. Good friend of mine. Props to you Mike!!!!

I still need to do this shit, and I'm hoping to knock most/all of it out on Sat/Sun:

Prep to do before install:
-Cut one ring off of 3-ring prong on neg of battery, and solder the 5 wires into two sets of 2 and 3 wires to remaining two prongs (it's in way to move battery back 1").
-Swap out stock battery tray for new one, and move batter back 1" to clear new intake
-Replace 5 fmic couplers with new ones, and replace 3 worm clamps w t-bolts (Saturday)
-Replace all vac line when new stuff arrives (Saturday)
-Cut base map when laptop arrives

That's it!!! I FINALLY have all the parts, and it feels DAMN good. It's been bugging me for the last two weeks knowing that I didn't have some stuff, and it was worse that I didn't know some of the things to get. MAD PROPS TO JOEL for putting the list together, checking his pics for last parts, and giving me a crash course on the BT install tonight on the phone. Thanks again man, and good chatting w/ you!!!

1/4" line for coolant? Did I miss something? The stock coolant lines are 3/8" I thought. Unless you're talking about cooling your MV-S or somethin?

Only thing left to build is the dump pipe.

Jmengineers stuff is pretty close to finished as well.

Sweet! Did the rest of the stuff already ship? I recall something about you sending that stuff out, but I don't remember now. Carrier? I'm praying I'll get it all by Friday... I'll pay a bit extra for Fedex Ground to get the stuff here in time if necessary. Thanks again DJ!! Oh, did Tial come with all the springs?! I hope so! haha

Awesome dude. I just yanked bumper and changed all the couplers. About to post some pics then do some other prep. New couplers are WAY better. Is there a local place to buy one 2.25" hump hose?

So, I didn't sleep well, so studying would be a waste. However, it wasn't raining out, so I took that opportunity to swap in my new couplers.

Comparison of Vortex Couplers VS. CPE Couplers (thanks for link Tim!!)

And here are the new couplers installed. They fit MUCH better and are way better quality than the CPE ones that are prone to leaks imo:

And here's the last one:

^^Thinking about all the clearance issue of the hot pipe above and the intake kept me up last night. Then a lightbulb went off. I can probably cut the bottom of the hot pipe (where it attaches in pic above) by like 1" so the pipe sits lower. I was looking in my engine bay, and I think it'll work NP. I was talking to Joel last night and he was explaining how to 'clock' the turbo to get it in the right position. It later occured to me that I could simply chop that end of the hot pipe, and maneveur the hot pipe so it will reach the trubo. There isn't much room, but with no tmic, I can just clock the turbo 20* higher (or whatever it takes) to mate up w/ the hot pipe if dropping it causing it to gain a few inches in height.

I also have to cut the hot pipe at the outlet end of course, but that should make it even easier to reach. I'm not sure of the clearances between intake and hot pipe (or Joel's cold pipe), but I'm pretty confident my solution will work! I'll sleep much better tonight, and I'm glad the new couplers are in .

EDIT: I may need one 2.25" hump hose connector to replace the coupler in the last pic above to buy me some manuverability. That's why I was asking Tim if they have something local. As you can see from the pics, hump hoses will not fit anywhere else on the CPE kit. It was pretty snug between the pipes w/ the much thicker couplers + t-bolt clamps. Glad this pita is done. The rest of the prep is cake.

MOAR prep work done. Went to my buddy's house and took care of the three ring prong on the battery. Problem is I need to move the battery back about 1" to clear the intake, but I had 6 w/m ground wires running to a 3-prong ring, and one of the prongs was in the way!

So, I cut off one of the three ring prongs that was in the way, and snipped all the wires off. I then all and soldered 4 20 gauge (420) wires togther, and then the 16 gauge and 18 together. They fit perfect:

My buddy's crimper broke, and I didn't have mine, so I just used some electrical tape to hold the wires in the connectors. You can also see (kinda) that once the last part of the new battery tray arrives, I'll be able to move that battery back about 1 1/4"... so I'll have room for the intake. The third prong used to be in the way, right next to my Labonte Controller... but no more!

FINALLY, as my buddy had the right socket, I pulled one of those damn mani studs out so I could measure it. I called some bolt specialty places to find one 1/4" or so shorter that still had a hex head, and it ended in fail. But I figured I'd take down the dimensions in case you guys can find them. I'll try McMaster-Carr later.

I also picked up my buddy's angle grinder and dremmel. I'm gonna pick up a few OEM ex mani studs (as shown), and cut them in advance to help speed up the install. Almost ready to go... just need to get + cut bolts, replace battery tray, and replace vac line, and it should be a smooth install!

*Just a reminder to myself*:

Still Need:
-Buy a cutting wheel for Dremmel @ HD to cut fmic piping
-Pick up Mani Studs @ Liberty Mazda Monday afternoon or Tues.
-8mm box end for turbo bolts to rotate hot side (borrow from mike when returning DVDs + give him battery)
-Get New Sticker on Tues & pick up plates

Prep to do before install:
-Swap out stock battery tray for new one, and move battery back 1" to clear new intake
-Replace all vac line when new stuff arrives (it arrived)
-Go to Mike's and cut 2 mani bolts + smooth. Put nut on stud, wrap mani in rag, vice, cut, unscrew to get excess crap off.
-Cut base map when laptop arrives (26th)
-Find crimpers and crimp wires

-Waiting for Delievery:
-Battery tie downs, 1 Denzo ITV24, DJ's stuff, Maybe pipes + hump hoses.
-Laptop (26th)
-ATR .exe

^Seems like more than it is, lol. I just don't want to forget anything here.

New tie downs FINALLY arrived, and I moved battery back. Naturally none of the holes lined where I wanted it, so I drilled me some. It sits perfect... with the battery against the back lip of the tray, it leaves about 1/8" before my meth controller.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

I'm PSYCHED because I've had to look at this POS piece of wood under my stock tie down since early last Fall, and it was all I saw when I popped the hood. Well, first thing anyways. I also plan on cutting like 3" off the new tie down rods... I was wondering if my hood would close, LOL. So here's the last pic before top mount for your viewing pleasure (sans wood):

I also changed out some of my vac line when I was down there w/ some better high temp stuff. I didn't bother w/ any of the vac lines going to the ebcs, tip, and fs bcs as I'm ditching all of that anyways (for now).

I also orded two 2.25" L pipes, 1 2.25" straight pipe, two hump hoses and 4 t-bolt clamps to make a custom hot pipe for the top mount (Thanks Anthony). I ordered it yesterday, and hopefully it will get her by Thurs or Fri at the latest via Fedex ground. That way I can sell the CPE fmic kit intact when I go to do a custom fmic.

We did Carlson's 2.5" fmic today too. Moving the washer tank is way easier than I thought. Two bolts hold the tank, then you just spice the wire harness and extend the pos/neg wires to the pump, an extend the stock fluid line. It's really not bad at ALL. After getting some experience making the custom hot pipe, I'll start thinking of doing the custom fmic w/ 2.5" pipes sooner. I just need to figure out a core. I wanted TR10, but I don't have the means to make a custom bracket + do the welding, so maybe something slightly less insane. I don't mind cutting the crash bar, but I'd rather not have to weld shit. We'll see .

-Cut Battery Tie down bolts, as they're like 3.5" long, lol
-Cut base map when laptop arrives (26th)

-Waiting Delievery of:
-2 L-Pipes, 1 Straight Pipe, 2 hump hoses, 4 t-bolt clamps, DJ's stuff.
-Laptop (26th)

^^Nice to see the list getting a lot shorter!!! Lots of little things to think of and address

I want to see this happen too man, haha. BNR2/ts3076 are different ball parks... Not sure what I've spent and some of it is classified . However, with the custom set up, since you're replacing the DP/SRI/Intake/mani, you can sell all that shit when you go top mount, and get a good chunk of loot back.

Thanks bro. No set whp goal per se. I'll be taking it 'easy' until I'm done w/ my studies. I'll be running spring... working up to 22.5psi spring once I get the maf cal'd right and all is well. AFRs probably a modest 11.8. Pretty damn conservative. My ricer math says that should put me around 350 wheel, probably less... I really don't know. It depends what I do w/ timing, and whether I'm gonna run meth at first, or just spray water. Probably will just be h20... just want her up and quickly tuned safe so I can focus on the books.

Once I'm done w/ studies and get a good job, then I'll upgrade maf + fmic, turn up boost, lean her out a bit more if I can, spray meth, and we'll see. Not interested in a dyno queen at any rate. I want to learn how to launch w/ her and get up to the track. All in good time. I just wanted it installed and running well and tuned safely for now .

INSTALL IS BACK ON FOR THIS SAT 28th!! And a lot closer to me ~20 miles.

Thanks to Ben and Carlson and Ben's garage, the install is back on! I just saw those guys yesterday and they did Carlson's shocks and we helped him swap fmics, haha. So, I'll be in good hands.

its not money thats gonna help me decide between BNR and this its ease of install lol. I'm willing and able to install anything as long as all parts I need can be bought and minimal customization is needed. Good Luck!

Then this sounds like a good set up for you. Plus top mount = easy access. I can't imagine going otherwise if I had a choice. Plus I may swap out for a larger hotside 1.xx hot side, not sure yet. The point is, I can do that myself in no time if I choose later on. So, it keeps your options open to play around with different turbo set ups for not that much cost, and very little labor.

You need to edit that first post man. It's .78 AR not .73. It's even in your sig. Stop buying shit you don't need to spend money on. Pull the two studs out that run into the mani and cut them like my pics show. I've started labeling more of my pics with titles and descriptions to help you out.

All photobucket pictures are titled and commented for your guidance. Have a laptop handy if you need to refer to them during install.
