Had big problems with the head, and pretty much lost all ambition on the build, and bought an FR-R.

I picked up a used "rebuilt" head a long time ago. When I got it, the valves we so caked with carbon I came to the conclusion that "rebuilt" meant hot tanked.
So I decided to clean the valves myself and use the head anyway.
I bolt the head down and run a leak test. All the seats are leaking. I pull the head and figure I'll lap the seats. After a week of lapping, I said, "fuck this" and decided on sending the head to get Freekbuilt with a 5 angle grind and port work. I asked that the head be inspected before any work was done to ensure its viability before wasting any time and money.
The work was done, I got the head back, bolted it down, and the holes on the timing cover to the side of the head didn't line up. I measure the head to the stock untouched head on my oem motor and there is .035 missing from the machined head. Back and forth with Justin went on for a while until I pulled some pictures of when I first received the head and could tell that it had been skimmed before ever going to Justin's machinist, not inspected by the machinist as requested and another .004" removed.
I rolled with it. Continued the assembly. Did another leak test. Numbers were worse than before the 5 angle grind. Pull the head again. Valve seats weren't touched at all. I was refunded a couple hundred bucks for the 5 angle grind the machinist didn't do, and was left to lap all the valves in myself, again. Head sat on my kitchen island for the entire month of December while I worked a valve at a time testing with water.
Head is now on, and I haven't gotten around to doing a third leak test. I need to borrow a compressor. Haven't checked to see how tight I've made my tappet clearance yet either. I removed a shit ton of material to get these valves to hold water without leaking.
That's where it sits.

Ouch.

In my experience just lapping the valve seats can change the valve clearance quite a bit, let alone removing that much from the head deck.

I know it would be a step backwards, but have you considered just swapping on the untouched head from your OEM block to get it running? Or possibly sending that known good head out to be ported instead?
