Default Mitsu TD06-17C turbo (NEARING COMPLETION!)

I am in the process of doing a top mount setup using a spare sy/ty TD06-17C I had sitting around. After some searching around I don't see much if any guys running mitsu turbos, so this will a bit different build, which is cool. The turbo has a T3 footprint. Compressor side of the turbo is a bit bigger than the k04, however the hotside (8cm TD06) is quite a bit larger, so i'm hoping it will flow decently up top. After I get it running and tune it, I'm hoping to be in the mid to high 300's. Down the road, if i decide I want more, this can be machined to fit a 20/25g pretty easily/cheaply. Motor should be getting pulled this week for a forged build and things will be mocked up in the process using spare motors my buddy las laying around. Ron Floyd @ RDMotorsportz.com will be doing the build and fab work. I'll keep everyone uodated on the setup. I'm curious to hear everyone's opinions.

Progress is being made. Motor is built and in. Now we are trying to mock things up.

with the turbo sitting directly on the manifold, it cleared everything just fine, but it put the turbo in a position that would make routing the downpipe and intake pretty difficult. The attached pic shows a wedge that we are making to sit the turbo higher and closer to the valve cover. This was the first try at the piece, it obviously still needs a bit of modification to get it where we want it.

The revised angled piece was still a tad off so we made a cardboard template to give the welder. Should have the finished piece on Monday. I'm a little surprised at the apparent lack of interest in this venture. I kinda figured there'd be a little more interest in this project since its a pretty cheap option for a (little)big turbo, even with the manifold ($97) and piping fab needed. Maybe when it's all said and done and I'm posting numbers people will have more interest lol.

The welder finished up the angled flange adapter today after a few revisions and test fitting. We mocked up some 3"piping do an intake and cut the maf housing flange off my mazdaspeed intake to have the welder weld in on the new intake. That should be done tomorrow. Hopefully next week we can get the down pipe fitted and welded up as well as the dump tube for the ewg. Then by the end of next week start tuning it. Can't wait for it to be done. I'm really curious to see how this turbo performs.

So things are getting close to completion. Turbo now fits great with plenty of clearance. The welder welded up the int wastegate flapper and I had some 3" aluminum piping laying around that we ended up using as an intake. We cut the maf housing off of my MS CAI and welded it onto one of the pieces as well as a section of 1" aluminum for a bypass return. I bought a 3 ft section of 1" from Grainger for $14 and it worked great.
Ron Floyd, my friend/builder (RDMotorsportz) will be out of town this weekend to meet up with some of you Nator TN guys in Nashville so we are probably looking at early next week for a start up day.
main things that still need to be done:
- modify my DP to a V-band connection. We are using 2 DPs todo this. One has a vband already and the other is the J2 DP that came off my car. Obviously we will need to add some length to the dp as well due to the top punt setup.
- water and oil lines. I bought a kit from Kinugawa so this shouldn't be much of an issue. Might need a random fitting or 2.
- make ext wastegate dump
- modify/shorten the upper hot pipe to accommodate the top mount location
Other than that, just some clean up, random small things and painting some piping. After that I'll start tuning it.

The attached pic shows the intake in black with red couplers. That will be re-done in wrinkle grey with black couplers. The IC piping will be the same.

I guess I could update this. Setup was completed near the end of March. A total of 100ish miles was put on the setup before I had a massive car fire, destroying everything. I had hardly made any progress on the tune. Was running only about 8 deg of timing max (on an e mix) and only saw a peak of 15 psi. Was very unfortunate. This turbo had massive potential on the car. It felt identical to my New CS turbo at the same boost pressure, which makes sense because they are very similar in size (TD05H-18g). The CS has a little smaller exhaust wheel and housing, but has a slightly bigger compressor side. I still have the mani, wedge plate, DP, dump tube, and turbo grill need a rebuild). We might play with it some day down the road.

I'd have to say fuel line related since I smelled the strong fuel smell in the cabin, but we'll never really know. Still need to inspect my hardline a bit more for cracks. Yes, Ron, at RD is helping me tremendously, even though I'm confident it wasn't his fault. I put a lot of wrench time on this car together with Ron and neither one of us saw anything that would have caused this. Ron was there within 10 minutes of it happening and has been there every step of the way after. all work to drop the engine in my speed6 has been free as well as some things above and beyond that.
