Looks like turbo is going out. Went wot and stopped at a light and my car was gushing white smoke. Pulled into parking lot and let it idle and it kept smoking. Going to put it on the lift at my friends shop tonight and check it out. Anything I should be looking for?

White smoke? I hope it's not your head gasket. It starts off as white smoke...but if you let it keep going, it should turn blue-ish if it's oil you're burning.

Quick solution: stop driving the car if possible, or drive VERY lightly, order this:
eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices

Then get a drill and a 5/64" titanium bit. Enlarge the hole in that restrictor bolt, install in turbo, and smoking should go away...unless you are the unluckiest schmuck like I am and it won't help. It's cheap to do and worth a shot.

Tip: If you go through with drilling out that bolt, go VERY slowly or the bit will poke through and drill the other side...then you will be stuck with a bolt with two .078" holes which is barely better than stock. One .078" hole is perfect oil feed for our turbo.

It was all white smoke, didn't let it idle long enough to see if it turned black. What I did notice when I popped the hood though was my heat sheild on my mani was cracked. I had my friend pick me up and I'm letting it sit for about an hour then going to his shop to investigate it. Would the bnoon bolt help at all in this situation? I just need it to last me till around january till I get the pte in. I think I will flash the stage 2 safe map as well to keep me from going wot. I am investing in a gas scooter to get around soon also for shit like this.

Yeah dude, Brad doesn't make them anymore. He doesn't even have his tools anymore (long story). Order that bolt right now. It should only take 3 days MAX to get there because that seller is in CA. Really hoping your seals aren't as fucked as mine were. Even with a .0625" hole (a little on the small side), I was getting bad smoke at idle. Fuckin ghetto. A .078" hole makes sure you won't be oil starved, but it's less than half of the flow of the factory bolt, which I don't know what the fuckin Mazda engineers were thinking, but two .095" holes is mad retarded.

Yeah I have hich hopes that the seals are still somewhat good, at least until I can get the rest of my parts for my build. I will definitely order that bolt as soon as I get to a computer, itd be the same install as the bnoon bolt correct?

It drove and sounded fine driving from the light to the gas station, just smoked whenever I stopped. I haven't done much research on the smoking turbo because mine hadn't been this bad before so idk if that's a symptom or not. My car looked like a fog machine lol.

Yeah, dude direct bolt on. Don't mind the banjo fitting it comes with. I couldn't find just a straight bolt without it. Use the crush washers, of course. One thing I noticed is that it only threads in a turn or two by hand, so it's deceiving. After it turns smoothly one turn, get a wrench on it. If it continues to turn really easily with a wrench, it is threaded correctly. It's a piece of cake.

Smoking at idle is the EXACT symptom. My car didn't smoke in part throttle...but since it was super fucked, it smoked badly at WOT. The smoke at idle was atrocious, though, and really embarrassing.

Yeah it was pretty embarrassing. Fuck me I need to get approved for this new credit card so I can finish the build. How much does this bolt help? I don't mind occasional smoke but if it smokes like that 24/7 I'm gonna be pissed lol. I'm definitely not going wot anymore though that's forsure.

I can't make any promises, man. You might get lucky like most people. Like I said, I'm one of the unluckiest guys when it comes to turbos. If your seals aren't as damaged as mine, it should completely eliminate the problem. In bnoon's thread, he said he was smoking like James Bond smoke screen style at idle and after he installed his bolt, it went away entirely, so it is definitely possible for you as well!

the bnoon bolt is a preventative measure, that's all. It won't stop smoking once it's begun. When the smoking starts, your seals are going bad, ain't no reversing it.

bnoon bolt doesn't bolt into anything but stock turbo IIRC, too.

I'm still on stock turbo. And I babied my car on the drive home, didn't shift till 3k the whole drive. Got home let it idle and after 5mins it smoked like a smoke machine. Fml. Time to try the bolt and finish getting parts.

Anyways, now onto a build related question, since I'm not going to be using the coolant lines, should I cap them or route the two together? I read something about that in another precision thread.

You cannot cap them. One of the lines goes to the EGR/coolant manifold. If you capped it off, you would be stopping coolant to part of the motor. Just buy a 3/8 barbed joiner. Problem solved

God I'm so sick of this smoke shit. I found that if I give it a little gas while at a light, it doesn't smoke, like around 1200rpms. I'm going to get atr tonight and raise my idle and hopefully that helps a little. Also going to switch to 5w40 in a week.

Oh, and actually, it turns out my turbo wasn't smoking. FUCK ME. My PCV valve died so it looks like I'm smoking from my valve seals.

You can have my stock turbo, haha.

Naw, I think my stocker is a little beat up.

I disconnected my valve cover breather and let it dump into a container on the way to and from work. I had a shit ton of oil just from 36 miles...also, I'm still burning oil. The PCV valve is completely dicked and of course fuckin Mazda doesn't stock them so I have to wait. The damage has already been done, so we'll see what a new PCV valve does. New valve seals will cost a shit load...might have to throw in the towel...

Well shit man dont give up! The bad luck will end eventually....if your turbo doesnt smoke and your willing to send it out ill take it idc if theres shaft play or it doesnt perform at its best. Im just using it to be able to get around with a safe map loaded.

Hmm and there's no way to check the seals once its off the car? Let me get back to you on the k04, I'm going to try the thicker oil/banjo bolt and see if that subdues it a little.

Got the bolt today, going to attemp to drill it out tonight. A 5/64 drill bit should make a .078" hole correct? And do I drill into the tiny hole already on the side?

Yes, you just want to enlarge the hole that is already there. Be very careful not to punch through the other side. And of course, triple check for metal shavings.

Well installed bolt. So far, no smoke upon startup, just smoke coming out cuz its cold. No smell of burning oil, will see if it smokes after driving to eat.

Bolt didn't help at all lol. Can check that off the list. Now going to try 5w40 on my oil change coming up in a couple days. I really think bumping the idle would fix it. When I'm at a light and I keep the rpms at 1500, no smoke. Without it, there's smoke. Wish atr was compatible with macs...

If you are still smoking with that much smaller of a bolt, it sounds like your seals are just as shot as mine are. 5w40 might help, but who knows. Sad times.
