Thehead's GTX3071R, fmic, cp-e exhaust mani build

Build list:
GTX3071R kit from edgeautosport
CP-E BT Turbo inlet pipe
CP-E Manifold with stock flange
CP-E Xcel SRI
Grimspeed EBC
Intercooler piping kit
Treadstone TR8 Intercooler core
bov adapter
stock bpv adapter plate
and I also needed 2 more silicone couplings.

I did have the ebay core from the diy fmic thread but didn't think it cooled efficiently so I upgraded to the Treadstone TR8 after I created this thread. I don't have any updated pics with the TR8 Core, I did have to cut half of the bumper away, but not completely off.

Intercooler installed

My turbo, bt inlet and exhaust mani came.

And this is where I'm stopped for now, about 6.5 hours in so far, the shop I'm working on it at is closed for easter so I wont be back at it til next saturday.

A few issues I have had so far:
i forgot that I have to rock the motor forward in order to get the CP-E Exhaust mani to fit otherwise that would've been in already.
my v-band gasket that goes between the downipe and turbo has turned into dust, so I'll have to source one of those.
The heater core lines were in the way for the compressor to fit properly, I was able to move them slightly but won't be able to tell if it was enough until I get the manifold in.

Update 4/10/2012
removed rmm bolt to move engine forward with a jack to get manifold in, what a bitch.. slightly persuaded with a deadblow hammer as well.

Turbo bolted to manifold and manifold bolted to block.

Things still left to do include getting a stubby wrench for that damn manifold to turbo nut on the front left side. Hook up ebc, relocate battery and install intake. I'll probably have to double check that everything is torqued to since my friend did some of it. He fucked up my v-band clamp too by loosing the original nut and replacing it with the wrong one that was slightly different thread pattern, fuuckk. Had to pick up a new one of those today. Should finish up tomorrow.

The intercooler core is 27x6x3.5, I think it should be ok, it should have plenty of flow where it is, If I notice my bats are too high it'll just give me more of a reason to run meth, hah

The gtx3071r should be here this week, It should be going on this upcoming weekend.

Are you doing the tial flanged turbo with external wastegate? I'm waiting to see how much fab work needs to happen to fit that turbo and mani.

Ugh, so I just went out driving a little bit, I was in 3rd gear under somewhat heavy acceleration 50-75% and I heard a pop and immediately lost power. I'm not really sure what happened, I thought I lost a boost tube but I glanced at it a bit and didn't hear any leaks or see anything out of the ordinary. My afr was at 9 when I limped it home backfiring, couldn't get above 35mph. Anyone know what could've happened? There was a little bit of smoke coming from the turbo area, I'm assuming it was because of the 9:1 afr.

you popped a clamp from the FMIC most likely. it happened to me.

Looks like CX Racing kit...same thing I have and the T-clamps suck balls and break easily but tighten them down really tight because I had pipes popping off a few times before I got it all tightened up.

Most likely blew a coupler. It happens when not tight enough just trying to finish up

Another thing you can do is sand the last 1-2" of pipe that goes into the coupler. Creates a lot more friction. I did that to a pipe that came loose and I haven't had a problem since (over 6k miles).

Try hairspray also. Old school trick to help make the seal.

Do it the RIGHT way and get a lip on the pipe. You can either have a bead welded all the way around or make your own pipe flaring tool. I chose to have a bead welded and mine never pop off. The t-bolt needs something to hang on to especially with a BT.

I agree a lip is always ideal, but sanding/hairspray could be a quick temp fix!

yep, you guys were right of course, my tb coupling popped off

It is still using the stock clamps, I'll have to find a new one to replace it, I'll probably have to be careful not to crack the tb housing with a tight clamp. For now I put some contact cement between the metal and the coupling and around the seal.

Also, I was monitoring my bats while cruising, they were about 110F at 65mph cruising, went down to 90-95 under 10lbs boost, at a stop it was about 125-130F, I'll have to dig through my old logs and see what I was at before

Well, at least the temps are dropping under boost, so the intercooler is working to an extent, but doesn't seem to keep up. Hot side tube is probably getting heatsoaked. Looks like you already have tig's, so not much else you can do.

Have you done coolant bypass? If not, bigger core, or start looking at wmi. I don't see why even with a small core it would be less efficient than oem tmic.

Well, got almost everything, just waiting on my tracking numbers from atp and cpe with @JP@edgeautosport.com for my turbo, exhaust mani, cpe big turbo inlet and big maf, after i get them I'll be installing it, hopefully that'll be next weekend's project.

I still have to work on getting the intercooler to work better, I'm not happy with how it's working, more than likely I'll have to sell this one and get the tr8 core. See what I can do tomorrow.

im running the cx racing fmic kit and havnt had any probs with boost temps.(3076 iwg stock mani ) obviously at idle your temps are going to raise but take off and youll notice your temps drop. to be honest the only issue i have with this fmic is that after running my car fairly hard ive seen high coolant temps. let off the throttle and they will drop back down to 219. Cruising im fine ( 180-190 ) but im thinking that the fm is starving my radiator of air when pushing through the gears at wot more than once.

I swapped out the cxracing fmic for a treadstone tr8 this weekend, temps are better and I was able to put my lower spoiler back on which probably helps a little too. I had to cut half of the crash bar out to get it to fit, heres the difference in intercoolers.

Waiting on my gtx3071 and cpe parts still, I guess ATP has a back order on wastegate actuators so who knows when that'll be in.

You know if you thought the intercooler sucked to install that CPe manifold has proven pretty difficult. Could be easier on a six though especially if you pull the wipers and firewall crap, @djuosnteisn

Some of my stuff will be here on Thursday, I'm assuming it is my CP-E stuff since its 22lbs. I think what I'm going to do is install the CP-E exhaust mani with the stock turbo and do a few Vdyno pulls to see the hp/torque increase with the k04 Since I'm sure people are interested in that.

Well good luck to you ..... When I did mine I thought..... Iwg.... Easy drop in..... I was creeping to like 26psi when I was targeting 22..... Amazing turbo though

Well, I got my turbo, exhaust mani and bt inlet today so I'll be installing it all at once rather than just the exhaust mani. pics!

I'm a little frustrated at this whole process with edgeautosport, they've been more than helpful but the names on my packages were spelled wrong, normally this wouldn't be an issue but I'm on a military base and it makes it a ridiculous pain to try and get my packages. My turbo inlet was here for a month because cp-e had the wrong name. I'm still trying to locate my bigmaf.
