My company manufacturers optical sensors that can measure height deviation on the order of 20 nanometers, so 1 micron is relatively easy (I would assume) for most companies these days.

@Tokay444; perhaps they are referring to surface roughness on the order of 1 micron, rather than clearance between parts. That seems a lot easier to achieve, and would not create as much of an issue with thermal expansion induced interference between parts.

Well, was told directly it was a diameteral tolorence. That's all I have to go on.

But I agree.
So either someone doesn't know what they're talking about (likely) or they've spec'd a tolorence that has no relevance to the part's performance in the real world and are simply using it for bragging rights.
