Did some driving today in the high desert, ambient was at 97, ac on 67, coolant temps hovered around 185-195 in stop go and Highway, went through a drive through and let it sit ac off for a while, hit 212 and the fan kicked on like it was supposed to, brought temps down to 207, then turned ac on to 72 and they dropped a bit more to around 200, so far so good as temps go. Hit on some boost on the highway and it only raised temps slightly and they came back down fast after I let off the throttle.

Initial impressions are good, before with stock radiator after I hit 200 it wouldn't ever go back below it without hitting the heater, now ac running and it drops back to the 190s like a champ. Gonna see how hot the afternoon is tomorrow and try to run in over 100 ambient temps.

I still want to see one of these at half height.... if you could get the same coolant volume as stock with a thicker core down low, the rest of the space could house a FMIC.

I'd you don't mind taking out the ac system, sure that could work. Just not very well, the purpose of having a big surface area is to dissipate heat better, a thicker core won't do as well as a taller/wider one.

I don't disagree with you on the importance of surface area but the parts in play are a little more complicated, most (all) current FMIC's cool charge air at the expense of engine cooling air flow to the radiator; this is one of the main reasons I am still TMIC.

What I am suggesting is that you take a portion of the space where the stock radiator is and place an IC there, this would require a shorter (height or width) core but still likely big enough to improve on stock for both; it would give you a wider IC core in the area Mazda designed to get good air flow, the same area serviced by the electric fan, which might be manipulated to curb heat-soak, I don't believe you should have to remove the AC core for this; though I did use an AC core for a water to air cooler on my last project car.....

It could be 1/3, or 1/2 of the space and I might sound crazy but it would keep things simple, and the intake path as short as possible.

Getting this back on topic though, more cooling is good for the folks tracking these cars and corksport seems to be addressing areas where they could improve for track use... (brakes, cooling) makes me wonder what is next....

The ac core is directly in front of the radiator, it's also the same size (HxW). If you want to make a short deep intercooler it would have to go through the ac core, same goes for the radiator.

I do agree that it's a good idea, just not practical for most people. Definitely something a dedicated race car could use.

Just an fyi for anyone else looking at this. It does not fit with the GenPu Cobb FMIC kit.

Hotside pipe clearance goes from finger depth between pipe and radiator shroud to none with the other side touching the pump.

Damn, the water pump doesn't clear on the hot side? No combination of angling the piping worked to give you some space?

Its the ac compressor on the engine side and the shroud on the other. The Cobb pipe is directly touching the radiator shroud when its (where it should be) on the intake mount point. Taking it off the mount and fishing it around did not prove fruitful either.

Totally not blaming Corksport for this. Just getting info out there.
