Default About the pull the trigger on an MS3, but it is smoking ...

Hey all!

I am in the market for an MS3 1st gen. I just had one inspected today and I loved it, but I worry a bit because of the dreaded smoking issue.

Pretty sure it's the turbo, the mechanic saw a bit of oil that leaked. The puffs are grey to dark grey almost black and only while driving and it's intermittent.

The cars is stage 2, with a Corksport turbo. I'm surprised it's doing it even with an aftermarket one to be honest.

So I want to buy the car, but I am of course a little hesitant. What do you guys think?

Yes it's doing it on high boost, 18lbs I think. I can't tell if it's grey, black or blue-ish, because it happens while I drive and it's hard to see with the tinted windows lol.

Sounds to me like it has other issues and it's not the turbo if it's a cs turbo. Run.

Right, but I expected some small repairs initially. I doubt that this indicates the engine is dying or anything, it was just swapped 2 years ago. So I'm just trying to troubleshoot it further.

If you guys have questions to ask me, shoot. Else I could do another run with the car to look for specifics.

Was the motor rebuilt or replaced? New or used? Who's the car tuned by?

Yeap! The engine was replaced, pretty sure it was used. Tuned by an unknown garage around here. Maybe its just the tune?

Idk. Personally I wouldn't trust it. To me I'd be scared of the rings being shot or something. Especially being tuned by someone who doesn't know what the fuck they're doing.

Default About the pull the trigger on an MS3, but it is smoking ...

I understand the attachment that you get to a car you love. And you will love the MS3. Do yourself a favor and look on Autotrader for a stock one, or a low mileage one that's lightly modded. Ask for maintenance records. There's a lot of Fucktards out there that didn't research or have reliability in mind while modding. Shit, I did, and when you mod a car shit still goes wrong sometimes. I'm at 86k on a 2012 and at the top of my power range on the stock turbo. Only starts to go through oil when I was at the top of my 5k oil change intervals (have since went to 3,500), and only a little consumption. When this car is treated and modded right, with the right tune (not some garage that doesn't know this platform. Search Brentune) it will treat you right. Now start running.

Good. I spent a month of daily searching for the right Speed before deciding. The right one will come eventually.

Damn straight. It's been a month already, been through so many ups and downs... I fought hard, but I think it's about to pay off. Found a really awesome one, but far from stock (forged engine). Will update this thread with details as I get them. Having it inspected today.

Sounds good. Just be warry of built stuff as you have honestly 0 idea of what happened to it. Didn't torque to spec after build, was built with cheap internals, etc.

Just try to make sure you're getting something worth your hard earned dough

It is tempting as fuck to pull the trigger on one when you drive it and it's fast

Yeah, there's always that risk. Thanks for your input! I highly respect you guys' opinion. Hell, I was able to say no to this one, I'm still heart broken:
