Default *Only* the transmission

In the vain thought that the community may care and to update the few that I've been dealing with.. I'll tell everyone a story that may be entertaining.
__________________________________________________ _________________________

2 Saturdays ago I wound up meeting ice on a curving bridge going up hill while going slower than traffic (25) which caused me to put my bumper 2 feet over the side wall (the movies make it look so cool). Causing me to spin around denting and scratching my passenger side and rear bumper while grinding my front driver bumper. All lights and anything non-body were fine (passengers included). When we stopped spinning, we were buried nose first into the little snow we had on a hill which stopped us from rolling over. I got out, no one was hurt, no others were hit, no operational damage to the car so I figured I could drive out.. I tossed it in reverse and just ripped it out and turned it around and up the hill. Once again causing me to love all win drive.

The following weekend I'm scheduled to rip out the transmission after spending countless days getting everything together and doing research along with the help of some friends. So now I have a deadline before insurance gets it at the body shop.

Saturday Day 1) Gather the forgotten tools, jack the car up, gut anything touching the tranny up top and as much as we could below. Realizing that along the lines we weren't thinking we had to remove the driveshafts even though we were told..

Day 2) After being carted around town by my ride (had to go to the inlaw's)I got a really late start and was able to remove the driveshafts without much problem, the passenger required some muscling as the suspension fork didn't want to release the boot.. We then proceeded to finish unbolting everything below and discovered the transfer being blocked by the dp and finding the dp rusted through. After completely removing everything connected to the transfer and getting stuck with the dp being rusted we called it a night at 5AM as we were falling asleep with our hands holding the transfer.

Day 3) Just before deciding to cut the rusted exhaust out, one last attempt to unbolt it after soaking it in JB80. Removed the transfer and celebrated, now we're getting somewhere. Unbolted the last 2 bolts connecting to the tranny and starting to separate it from the engine we realize that there's no way around not having an engine hoist and all the stores are closed, there's one person with one that will service us at 9PM CST.. 1.5hrs one way North of us, in bad weather. So we take my grandpa's Cadillac Deville with a sharp left hand pull to Isle, MN in the snow and eventually get back by 1:30AM.. By 7AM we finally get the tranny past the clutch disc with the hoist, remount the engine (the TT front is a major PITA) and get the suspension back along with the tires.

Sleep 'till 8, call for a tow truck to take it and myself to the body shop for insurance, 11 rolls around and they come exited about the lack of transmission and I help him push it. Finally at the body shop and I get setup with a rental. 2 choices - Chevy Malibu.. Or bright-ass orange Dodge Caliber.. Only being in the SRT I figured it would be decent. Turns out it's tail light case is cracked and the passenger roof leaks so when I accelerate my riders get wet. Then I get to go to work until 11PM. To make it better it's got like 90HP and 4k lbs so I get great mileage.. At best 20 :/

Day 4) (today) I go to switch rentals as I found out the body damage is 8k and not being considered totaled I'll be without it until mid February. I don't want a broken gas guzzler. The rental location is moving so I go to the new one and there's no one there except renovators so I have to wait another day. Also, the insurance called wondering about the missing engine so I'll have to explain that when I can call my agent Saturday.
__________________________________________________ _______________________

I was informed that this was the tranny from hell and no one could believe the problems we had, my car also ate 8 tools made in Taiwan and we decided the MS6 hates shitty products. 1 open end wrench, 3 sockets, 2 extensions, 1 ratchet, and 1 punch.

So where's the good news? When I finally have my car back, it'll have a functional second gear synchros, a new clutch, front and rear MM, new TBE (liking the CS 80mm), new SRI, new seals, and most likely a cryo'd tranny.
__________________________________________________ _________________________

Now I have to get my rental squared and get my ass to Lowes so I can secure my tranny to ship it off.

If there's any 'Snowtans that wouldn't mind lending a lift or hoist it'd be appreciated, otherwise I'll go to Isle before I even start..

Also, we didn't think about it until we already started, but how would people like a guide for reinstalling the tranny and said above? We could've really used a guide to help us take it apart.. The manual left out some important bolts -.-

shit sounds epic son!

good effort pulling through. nothing like the abject terror of an impending deadline..

i hope to never need it, but you should absolutely do a how to. although i think someone did one recently, but it was titled 'clutch replacement', which involves dropping the tranny.. but multiple how-to's are good.

Thanks. I didn't see one, but RhoadBlock simplified the transfer and there's a rebuild so I'll try a combination of transfer/tranny/mounts combination sort thing. I'll also probably do internals while I'm at it... My wallet really hates me -.- Damn these forums and race car!

A story that was coherent, and used punctuation... WTF...lol
Yeah, sorry.. My brain decides to edit sometimes.

I was looking at that too, but haven't really been able to find solid answers on either for the differences they make. If anyone knows of a good place for comparison I'd appreciate it.

Update: I just exchanged the Caliber for a Corolla.. Still not race car, but better.. I'm humbled by the power the little people lack and am saddened by lack of shifting. Also got the straps and things needed to tie the tranny down so that's a task for tomorrow.. Time to head to work where I'll add to Rice of the Day from my travels today

Default Transmission, probably

So I'm assuming I blew my tranny, but I figured I try and see if any of y'all had any ideas. So I was driving on the highway and decided to step on the gas a little bit and all of a sudden the engine redlined like I was out of gear and then the engine died. For reference I have a 2007 mazdaspeed3 manual. It feels like I can still go through all the gears but the engine won't start back up. Is there some sort of safety feature that stops it from starting the engine when it senses a transmission problem?

Sorry about that, I shipped the transmission out and it needed all most of it's gears and synchros replaced. At the time I didn't have the money to rebuild it with any upgrades, so I bought a new one from Rosenthal Mazda at the time, they had been great for my OEM parts. I think the price was around 2500.
