Default For those of you that mount phone/GPS to dashboard...

I just recently picked up a new phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 4) and since it is so massive, I have decided that I want to mount it in a dock on my dash so that it's not in my pocket while I'm driving and therefore impossible to get out if I were to need it.

The MS3 dashboard is pretty flat, so I know it will be easy to mount to the dash and I was thinking about one of those sticky pads that don't have adhesive on them and are built to put a GPS mount suction cup on. For example:

Amazon.com: Bracketron UFM-210-BL Nav-Mat II Ultra Thin Dash Mount for GPS: GPS & NavigationAmazon.com: Bracketron UFM-210-BL Nav-Mat II Ultra Thin Dash Mount for GPS: GPS & Navigation

I have had one of these before in my 240SX (though not built for a GPS, I just used it to hold my phone flat on the dash) and it worked awesome. However, even though it did not use adhesive, it still left a a pretty nasty residue on the dash during the summer if I didn't take it off and clean underneath it every other day or so.

I know there are literally a metric shit ton of options for doing this, but here are my concerns/requirements that I am hoping someone can shed some light on with their personal experience.

- I don't want anything that is permanently mounted.
- I don't want anything that uses an adhesive backing (like the little GPS disks that 3M to the dash and suction cup goes on top)
- And I don't want anything that will leave a residue on the dash if left up for more than a day or two.

So yes, I know I'm being picky, but I know that there has to be other people that are just as anal about nasty residues or adhesive all over their dashboards. The phone mount will be used mostly on longer trips and to and from work, so I don't want a permanent addition to my dash as I will be taking it down fairly often most likely.

Basically I am just looking for any specific product recomendations that people have had success with on the MS3 dash specifically (I have a Gen 1) that doesn't leave a residue and has been sufficient for holding a GPS or phone up, especially on on the larger side. It seems every product on Amazon seems to leave some sort of residue even if it is non-adhesive, so I may just have to suck it up haha.

I'd be very wary of those "sticky" pads. You may have been able to clean the residue off of your 240SX, but i've seen those things cause permanent discoloration on several cars.

I use a vent clip mount for my AP. It's mounted to the right of my steering wheel. I like it a lot. The only thing that irks me about it is that it covers up the clock display on my dash.

Edit: FWIW, I was gifted one of those sticky pads close to a decade ago for Christmas. I noticed it leaving an oily residue causing discoloration after a couple months. Point i'm trying to make is that I was using it during the winter. So i'm apt to believe it's their use in general that leaves residue and not just warm climates.

The only mount I have found to work 100% of the
Airframe...Airframe...
time.

I have tried sticky pads that either stick too well (crap on the dash, shiny marks/residue) not well enough (bouncing suspension, acceleration, phone in flight) suction cups (not one of these seems to tolerate the hot/cold temp range in a sub zero climate)... It holds the iPhone 5 and 6 well (haven’t tried a 6 plus but that thing really is an iPad mini - mini)

It works in both horizontal and vertical mounts and it is easy to remove/transplant to other vehicles.

The only issue I have had is that you need to close the vent it is in front of if you are using heat, our heaters can overheat the iPhone...

Yeah, that's why I'm wary of those mats and wanted to post up and see what other people's experiences have been, especially with these cars in particular. I would be pissed to find a bunch of residue because the pad melted to the dash. Reviews on Amazon are hard to go by since most people are completely ignorant to possible damage to the car, nor do they drive the way we do.

The reason I went with the dash mount idea is because I already have my AP on the vent. Though I only have a V2 and I have an extremely low profile mount, it still blocks most of the left side of the center vent, and I'd hate to lose another vent to mount my phone as well. The Note 4 is comparable in size to the iPhone 6 Plus.

Thanks for the input so far guys.

You could possibly mount it to the windshield with a suction cup as I did my GPS:

My GPS is hardlined. I wrapped a loop with the cord once around the rearview just in case the mount should fall on a particularly hot day.

Post#10 of this thread explains how I wired it: convert dash cam cig power plug to hardwire

If you're not into splicing up the wiring to your mount (assuming your mount has special wiring) you could always splice in some sort of USB hub or extension and tuck it behind the light/headliner.

I've learned to put the suction cup on and LEAVE it. I have a second mount should I ever feel the need to use the GPS in a different vehicle. Taking it off and on compromises the suction cup pretty quickly.

I used to use one of these without any problems.
Amazon.com: Gear Beast Secure Grip Universal Air Vent Car Mount Cell Phone Holder Cradle for iPhone 6, 5, 5S, 5C, 4, 4S; Samsung Galaxy S5, S4, S3 and other Smartphones up to 5.2Amazon.com: Gear Beast Secure Grip Universal Air Vent Car Mount Cell Phone Holder Cradle for iPhone 6, 5, 5S, 5C, 4, 4S; Samsung Galaxy S5, S4, S3 and other Smartphones up to 5.2" including HTC, LG, Google Nexus, Nokia, Sony and Motorola. Easy install, no tools needed.: Computers & Accessories

But I had to sacrifice an air vent in the Texas heat...

Are you sure you don't want a permanent mount?
I feel like the sticky residue can be removed with goo gone. Similar to debadging a car.

Here's my current magnetic mount. It has been very convenient and holds fairly strong.

I use a Ram x-mount. They are really nice mounts. I have one suction cup base and another base that attaches to the headrest for filming.

If wanting to avoid residue on the dash, you're only option is to rip out the HU or do a windshield mount. Here's my recommendation:

Amazon.com: iOttie Easy One Touch 2 Car Mount Holder for iPhone 6 (4.7)/ Plus (5.5)/ 5s/ 5c/, Samsung Galaxy S5/S4/ S3/ Note 4/3, Google Nexus 5/4, LG G3- Retail Pack: Cell Phones & AccessoriesAmazon.com: iOttie Easy One Touch 2 Car Mount Holder for iPhone 6 (4.7)/ Plus (5.5)/ 5s/ 5c/, Samsung Galaxy S5/S4/ S3/ Note 4/3, Google Nexus 5/4, LG G3- Retail Pack: Cell Phones & Accessories

I ended up mirroring mine wirelessly from the center console:

Thanks for all the input guys. I am definitely going to look into putting it up at the top of the windshield like you have it @frothy;. I like that idea a lot. The mount does not have its own wiring, it works with a standard vehicle charger. I'll play around with it and see what I can come up with.

For reference, this is the mount I ordered and also my current dash set up regarding where my AP sits.

Amazon.com: RND Vehicle Charging Dock for the Samsung Note 4 (Compatible with or without a slim fit case.): Cell Phones & AccessoriesAmazon.com: RND Vehicle Charging Dock for the Samsung Note 4 (Compatible with or without a slim fit case.): Cell Phones & Accessories

I'm wondering if the suction cup with stick on the dash without any other sort of mounting to go underneath it. That would solve the whole problem haha. I was originally planning on putting it pretty much right above the hazard lights button between the two vents on the dash. Doesn't block the view of the road and it would sit just to the right of the AP.

I think I'd like to stay away from a permanent mount for now @dinoxor; only because I'm just not a huge fan of adhesives on the dash. Though I may just end up going that route in the end with one of those adhesive suction cup disk things since I'm sure 3M will be much easier to clean up than a melted sticky pad.

Thanks for the input so far guys, I'll definitely be looking into all those options.

I also agree with the windshield mount! I have my LG G2 windshield mounted and couldn't be happier, most of these mounts you can dash mount but mine also has a sticky suction cup. I use it for torque monitoring GPS etc, at least with the dash mount I can throw the car through turns without issues as it's very sturdy. I'd be willing to say it would probably hold up fine even through autocross it's so sturdy.

I use an old Garmin friction mat or suction cup mount depending on the vehicle I'm driving. My new deck in the ms6 does screen mirroring, so I'm sure that is going to be my answer for all of my vehicles soon.

I use the larger spider podium to mount my 10.1 inch tablet to my dash (or anything else I want).
No sticky residue and lots of options as far as position/location. I like the look of that CD mount as well.

Hmmm, I do like that, I might look into it. The dash mount I bought was a bust, it wouldn't keep the phone stable and even after only like 15 minutes that it was installed the adhesive was incredibly difficult to get back off my dash.

This worked for me with my speed6 as well. Kenu FTW!
