Looking to Reduce BAT's-Meth Injection or FMIC?
 
Hey MSF!

Car is primarily a DD which attends around 10 track events per year. Fully bolted with CST4 tuned very conservative by Nishan.

Runs very well, throttle response is good, lag minimal, BAT's hold 15-18* from ambient IAT's and I enjoy the functionality of the hood scoop. But, when it's an 85*+ track day I'm choking back 100*+ BAT's and that's not cool...

Options considered are getting a FMIC + front bumper mod or throttle spacer + meth. Goal is to squeeze some more reliable performance for reasonable cost.

Relocating the mass of the IC and reduced BAT's are positives for front mount. Top mount has very short piping and half the weight, but it's on top of the engine...

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Relocating the mass of the IC farther in front of the front axle doesn't seem like a recipe for improved handling. I'm just guessing here, but from a CoG and polar moment perspective, I suspect that the TMIC is less detrimental than hanging the whole thing out in front of the engine and running more pipe. There are, of course other reasons to go FMIC if you're doing serious track work.

Convert your TMIC into a FMIC without blocking the airflow to the radiator, here, here, and here.

Go FMIC. Running a bigger turbo and higher boost a TMIC just won't keep up. It just doesn't have enough time to recover and once its heat soaked its game over.

I swapped in a CS TMIC to see if my COBB FMIC was causing my high ECTs. All it did was send my BATs through the roof and ECTs pretty much unchanged. Sold the CS after 1 track day.

If you want to drop some easy weight to partially offset a FMIC just drain your washer reservoir.

Current set-up has CS TMIC and Koyo rad, minor rad ducting, etc. ECT's hold solid 185-195* unless it's 90*+ ambient. Leaning towards FMIC and ditching the washer reservoir. I am concerned with possibly experiencing ECT issues from the reduced airflow/surface area. In that case, I suppose I'd add an aux heat exchanger or incorporate a Davies, Craig EWP I have on the shelf for another project...

And I've never seen the TMIC relocation to FMIC, very resourceful and cool idea.

I will double check this summer again but when i first installed the fmic on my 6, i did saw some coolant temp. problems. but to fit the thing there, i had to cut the bumper bottom air damn.
When i replaced the engine, i did more trimming around and added deflectors to recover the front air flow and force it to go thru radiators instead of moving aside...I removed 1 line of honeycomb of the bumper cover to make a free path but i think adding an underside deflector between bumper and radiator helped the most....I'm confident because it went a lot better but winter take over before i was able to test it with a very hot weather....

I also inject meth since the beginning because i don't have easy access to high octane or corn juice in my area. This alone, probably saved me few destructive LSPI knock event while overboost on my previous speed stock bottom end...
