Default The Official Turbo Manifold Thread

Exhaust Manifold, Port & Polish and Intake Manifold

With threads like this it is often asked, “Which is the best?” This is difficult to answer as some consider best quality at any price, personal preference / bragging rights / street cred (popular brand), best value (quality at a good price), popularity (local Nator), cheapest price, etc. This is just a list in descending Genpu purchased popularity order. You may be able to find better deals from various websites. It is up to you to find the best price.

See MSF Wiki Glossary for any terms not understood: Glossary - Mazdaspeed Forums Mazdaspeed 3/6 Wikispeedia]MSF Wiki

Upgraded Exhaust Manifold (EM)

The stock manifold should be just fine until you go big turbo (Calvin@Cobb) as usually this manifold does not align with the BT for installation. Basically, any improvement in air flow into or out of the engine results in more performance. Improving the exhaust flow has the added benefit of more VE, which translates into better fuel consumption, less backpressure for transitioning from deceleration to acceleration and faster turbo spooling.

CP-E LTRmani

Cast 304 SS, durable, good to 700 HP, zero chance of cracking (weld-less), integrated external wastegate (can be used immediately or at a later date) (~44mm opening), optional Block Off Plate and clamp, cast merge collector spike. equal length runners, Tial waste-gate flange options
Inside Diameter (ID): 1.6”
Available from: CP-E LTRmani
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $943.95

DNP SS: SS-321

Designed to maximize the exhaust flow increasing the quickness of the turbo spool up into boost, requires no porting, one-year crack free warranty, DNP DISCONTINUED as company is no longer in business
Available from: No longer available
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $581 when was available

Full Race EFR

Robotic-TIG welded SS, equal length runners, direct bolt-on upgrade replacement designed to work with any B1 frame EFR turbo such as EFR6258 and EFR6758
Inside Diameter (ID): 1.25”
Available from: Full Race EFR
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $1,075.65 + $120 black or silver manifold coating

Full Race Pro

Robotic-TIG welded SS, equal length runners, direct bolt-on upgrade replacement designed to work with any stock or stock-frame upgrade turbocharger up to 500whp, i.e.: ATP Garrett GT28R, 30R, etc.
Inside Diameter (ID): 1.25”
Available from: Full Race Pro
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $886.88 + $120 black or silver manifold coating

Steedspeed

Note: stock flange flows less than Mazda EM
CAD designed to direct the exhaust at the turbo using the most direct tubular route possible retaining the kinetic energy in each exhaust pulse, machined on a Makino out of 1018 steel, finished with a thick ceramic coating that can stand up to 2,000 degrees, bolt-on stock replacement. Although all passages are fairly equal in length, for turbo applications, equal length is not important for making power. DISCONTINUED
Available from: No longer available
MS6 (), MS3 Gen1 (), MS3 Gen2 () $750 when was available

AFI Turbo Manifold

Stock Mazda turbo flange, T3 frame, or V-band with EWG option in either 38mvs or 44mvr
Available from: AFI Turbo Manifold
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $849 or Race $1,139

OBX Racing Sports Turbo Manifold (eBay)

Note: no guarantee to fit 99% of turbos
T-321 SS (v T-304, which is prone to cracking), lifetime warranty from manufacturing defects and cracking
Available from: OBX Racing Sports Turbo Manifold
MS6 (Not found), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $287.50

JDM (eBay from Hong Kong)

WARNING This manifold appears to be a Chinese clone of the V1 XS Power manifold, but produced with thin, 1.4mm thick, low-grade (T-409?) SS as rust was seen inside the poorly welded collector. The eBay seller made XS Power V2 claims, which seems suspect.
Available from: JDM
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $249

XS Power version one (V1) / V2

V1 on left V2 on right

*** BOTH ARE DISCONTINUED ALTHOUGH STILL FOUND ON XS POWER WEBSITE ***

Both versions were T-304 SS tubing and flanges with 3mm thick tubing- V1 had a more restrictive runner on cylinder number 4 and V2 corrected this.
Issues:
1 Early V2s had a fitment issue. The turbo location was moved 1/2 inch, which only seemed to affect MS6's when using an M2 downpipe, but this was corrected;
2 Do not use the XS Power gasket, but do use copper spray (LumberJack)
3 Reports of cracking were related to ceramic coating, using heat wrap or installing the turbo support bracket;
4 Wrong thread for EGT bung required modification; and
5 Some warped flanges that were not properly resurfaced initially.
XS Power claims a 15 HP gain, 28% better and more balanced flow
V1 and V2 available from: XS Power V2 but wait for V3, which is expected in April 2015. See: XS Power Turbo Manifold is here... Install pics & Dyno results to follow soon.
Inside Diameter (ID): V3 1.65” (42mm) expected
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $475

Treadstone

Highest grade ductile iron, coated with a high temperature paint to prevent rusting, iifetime warranty
Available from: Treadstone
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $339.15

Inside Diameter (ID): 1.38”
Available from: DOC Race
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $795

Boost Junkyz

Stock placement, options: external waste-gate, 44mm, T3 and VBand turbo inlet
Available from: Boost Junkyz

Upgraded Intake Manifold (IM)

In addition to PNP’s increasing the intake flow capacity, IM also improves the balance between the runner lengths. The OEM intake manifold (MAPerformance) has a variance of 25.23% between the runners.

JM Fabrication (JMF)

Sheet-metal Intake Manifold: 8 HP, 11 ft-lbs on K04, TIG welded from high quality 6061 T6 aluminium, CNC machined flanges and radiused inlets into each plenum bottom to improve airflow by 10-15%. Included with each manifold is all new stainless steel hardware, brass vacuum fittings, fittings to relocate your fuel pressure sensor, vacuum hose and a check valve for the EVAP line preventing you from having to destroy the OEM line. Options available are a "BRUSHED / UNPOLISHED" finish or a mirror like "POLISHED" finish. The TB elbow and inlet do not get polished. They are not visible once installed. There are additional throttle body flanges, a mount for the OEM MAP sensor, NOS bungs which are pre-drilled with a centring hole, but not tapped or drilled through the runners. That is left to the customer due to the many different nozzles on the market. Also, 1/8" NPT bungs are available for WMI, which are drilled through the runners completely. The throttle body can be installed rotated 180° from OEM for more clearance from the wire harness on the starter. Note: will NOT work with the stock top mount intercooler. Requires two to three weeks to make
Available from: JM Fab (JMF)
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $1,036.67 options: throttle body flange (stock or 75mm bore), OEM MAP mount, polished

James Barone Racing

MS6 (), MS3 Gen1 (), MS3 Gen2 ()

MAPerformance (Modern Automotive Performance) Rev3 Intake Manifold

26 HP gain, will take your core in exchange. This is included here as the stock plenum is cut open and reshaped to achieve a decreased 5.8% variance between the runners while improving the flow capacity by 7.31% to 1073 CFM.
Available from: MAPerformance (Modern Automotive Performance) Rev3 Intake Manifold
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $649.99 + options: ceramic coating $150 (black or blue), $400 (core)

Street Unit High Flow Intake Manifold with PNP option
WARNING: read http://www.mazdaspeedforum.org/forum/foru...3/#post1927730
Available from: SU
MS6 (?says all MS), MS3 Gen1 (?says all MS), MS3 Gen2 (?says all MS) $395

I have included the discontinued items (DNP, Steedspeed) as you still find them in signatures and they may be “for sale” when un-installed for selling the vehicle. Also, note the Warnings.

I could not find a link to JBR’s IMs, although several MSF members state they have installed these. Please provide these to me if you can.

Let me know if I have missed anything.

The OBX manifold is not guaranteed to fit our cars. It was just some prototype that uses a different turbo setup, and they decided to sell it. Definitely will not bolt up to about 99% of the turbos that are common for MZR.

Alos XS Power no longer sells the v1, they are currently selling a v2, with the v3 on the way, which according to people on here will be amazing.

Is the XS Power V2 still as prone to cracking / leaking due to thin metal, bad welds, fitment problems and dimpling primaries as reported by @aaronC5Z;?

@Inquisitive; you may want to add a break between exhaust and intake mani's. Your post just rolls straight from one to the other. Most people will be able to figure out the difference, it's just a suggestion.

The pictures shown below is the exact item you will receive. However, your item will be brand new and sealed in box.
I'm not 100% if the v2 is prone to cracking, I know @Turbo_Steve; (maybe wrong name?) is working very closely with them on the v3, and from what I've read it should be 100x better than any of their past ones.

Change the blue to a different color, it's very hard to read against the dark msf background. Makes my eyes hurt

RED perhaps? Or brighter BLUE

Good job compiling this info

The only issues I have seen with cracking were on manifolds that had been coated. Or the installer didn't remove the turbo support bracket and caused extra stress on the mani. V1 & v2 had 3mm thick piping which is not thin at all. The eBay knockoff / jdm parts manifold is thin tubing. Maybe people are mixing them up. I don't really think it was a problem on the v2, but when I helped with the v3 design they went even thicker to 3.2mm Pipe because the new builder said it was just a better option.

Oh, and if this is the thread you are using to put up a warning about the xs manifold, you really need to 're read it. Glowing catted down pipe after after market exhaust manifold install

Also in the thread the pictures are of the eBay knockoff manifold not an xs power. I sort of became an expert on this.

Op is pretty much using general opinion statements from someone who never had first hand knowledge with this particular part. He obviously does not know how these were built... Calling 3mm thick pipe "thin" is hillarious. That eBay jdm manifold however is 1.4mm thick pipe.
Duvin likes this.

Wow, not sure, but have I just been flamed in my own thread? If so, no wonder I have seen so many noobs in Who’s Online that were too afraid to post.

I am not denying that you may be an expert on this topic, but I have not seen where you wrote up a concise official EM thread like above. FYI - see the second image at MAZDA3 MAZDA6, Mazda Speed 3 and 6 Turbo Manifold Header 321 stainless ss TIG ported XSPower, MAZDA3 MAZDA6, XS Power Inc., which I thought was the XS’ official website.

I was quoting @aaronC5Z; and as his comments were not in this thread, I acknowledged him above. Where members have commented in this thread, I have not acknowledged, but have included a summary in the first line of the product’s description. As most members in this forum that post seem to be alpha males, I figured that they would inform me if I hadn’t quite got their point correctly.

I stand corrected, but I thought that the main problem with JDM was, as stated just above in the OBX product, JDM’s use of T-304 SS and not T-321 SS. My personal experience with cracking is more related to OEM cast EMs.

I think the main point that has been missed is the descending order of popularity by Genpu owners. Genpu owners should have gleaned the experience of the MS6 and Genwan pioneers. The main complaint that I have seen with the most popular EM by CP-E has been the price, certainly not the quality. The next most popular purchase was the now discontinued DNP, etc. XS is far down the line.

So, my challenge to you is to write a concise summary of your “expert” opinion on the products which you have personal experience or quote your source, not just a link to a thread, such as moving “thin” from XS to JDM. This is now the place for it.

Just pointing out that some of your facts are not facts. More just opinions about a brand in general.

Material thickness is way more important than grade of stainless. The thinwall manifolds like the JDM manifold don't actually have cracking welds. The weld location weakens / thins out the tubing at the weld. When those manifolds crack, the tubing actually crack right at the edge of the weld because it was weakened by the heat of welding. Thicker tubing prevents this.

XS Power V1 / V2

V1 on left V2 on right

*** BOTH ARE DISCONTINUED EVEN THOUGH STILL ON XS POWER WEBSITE***

Both versions were 304SS tubing and flanges with 3mm thick tubing- V1 Had a more restrictive runner on cylinder number 4 and v2 was implemented to correct this. Forum member StayBroke was helping xs power with test fitment of the v2 and reported no issues with the samples, when in fact there was an issue with fitment. Xs power had 60 manifolds built based off of the info from StayBroke. The turbo location was moved 1/2 inch which only seemed to affect mazdaspeed 6's when using an m2 downpipe. Many users have reported no issues with v1/v2 manifolds and have been running them for quite some time. There were only a couple issues reported with cracking but those issues were in cases where the installer either ceramic coated the manifold, used heat wrap or installed the turbo support bracket. There were issues as well with the egt bung being the wrong thread and requiring modification to add an egt sensor, as well as some warped flanges that were not properly resurfaced initially. @Turbo_Steve worked with XS power to re-design the manifold and fixed all issues that were known. V3 Manifold is to be released april 2015 See XS Power Turbo Manifold is here... Install pics & Dyno results to follow soon. for more info.
Was Available from: XS Power V1/V2
MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $475

Here we go - Please feel free to tweak the format as you see fit.

Also since xs power bought one of these "JDM" Manifolds and sent it to me to check out and therefore I have first hand knowledge, here is a proper re-write

JDM (eBay from Hong Kong)

WARNING This manifold is a Chinese clone of the v1 xs power manifold. They produced it with thin 1.4mm thick low grade stainless steel that @Turbo_Steve claims to not be 304ss because in a manifold he obtained to check out there was rust inside the poorly welded collector. Also it's most likely 409SS which would explain the rust & not 304ss as specified but further testing is needed.

Ebay seller of the Jdm manifold copied xs powers specs for the v2 as follows for this manifold which pretty much makes them meaningless ... "15 HP gain, T-304 SS, mandrel bends for K04 and BNR, improves outflow by 30%, more balanced flow from all runners, TIG Welded CNC Machine Flange, faster turbo spool. The factory turbo bracket may need to be removed for fitment." Includes gaskets which will fail and leak and 4 useless nuts and bolts that can't be used on this install. Poorly made part and not suited to long term use on a turbo application.
Available from: JDM

MS6 (Yes), MS3 Gen1 (Yes), MS3 Gen2 (Yes) $249

@shaneski;

I placed the Full Race EFR on top as that is the one that I have seen in signatures and personal profiles, but the Full Race Pro immediately follows to keep them grouped together.

@Turbo_Steve;

I like summarising, but please check me, especially on the MS6 / M2 point. I know that technically, each bullet point should start with the same grammatical syntax.

Is the XS Power gasket still a problem as reported by @LumberJack; in XS Power Turbo Manifold is here... Install pics & Dyno results to follow soon.?

I believe Lumberjack got a prototype that was warped at the relief cut and required machining to fix. The gaskets provided with the manifolds were always crap. This is why i told xs power to ditch the relief cut on the v3 and no longer include gaskets as the stock gaskets are the only ones to use on these motors anyway.

anyways, your edits above for the xs manifold and the jdm look good!

I removed the UR and Beachshoer IMs as I confirmed with the MSF members that they do not exist. @beachshoer; did some PNP work for some local Nator members. I’m just waiting for someone with a JBR IM to provide the link so that I can update the stub / placeholder.

I have added an image for the IM table because I couldn’t get any of the MSF editors to accept it native.

Thanks @cshunter; - I have added your three IDs. Hopefully, others will add the remainder. Perhaps @shaneski; knows if 1.25” applies to both Full Race EMs.

anyways, your edits above for the xs manifold and the jdm look good!
Thanks for the gasket info and for checking

If the quality and fitment improves in the XS Power V3, it could be the obvious choice for price and value. Any idea on the ID of V3?

I see that you ported your intake. Would you be willing to PNP for others – for a fee?

Tubing should be 42mm ID

I have zero interest in porting more manifolds. I am developing a bolt on manifold.

@Inquisitive;

Regarding the CP-E EM

Fitment after getting it down past the cowl portion at the bottom of the windshield is good. The part where the turbo bolts to the manifold is such a pain in the dick. Also, the nuts they provide strip easily.

Ease of install: < no such thing. If you follow there directions to the "T", you are practically taking your entire top portion of your motor apart. If you don't follow their directions, then you either have to disconnect the RMM or TMM to rock the motor forward after bending the shit out of the body molding at the bottom of the windshield to get it to slide down and onto the manifold studs. Also, if you try setting the turbo (assuming you did a turbo swap at the same time) on the front sway bar (i think) then putting the manifold in and having someone lift the turbo up it is a huge pain in the dick to thread the nuts and tighten all the nuts evenly..

As for quality and performance: both are great and provide much better flow. Also, it isn't such an eyesore to look at like the factory manifold

Here is my experience with the CP-E EM. The easiest way to install it, well there isn't an easier way, the thing is heavy as shit. After asking for knowledge from a few OGs, i learned that by removing the valve cover and loosening the pmm makes the install way easier, the manifold slides right in. The manifold to turbo bolts are a pain in the ass to install (thank god for my tiny pussy hands) i suggest cutting a wrench in half and have bandaids close by. the kozmic motorsports dump tube will not fit if you have a UR downpipe. The manifold is amazing, other than the fact that it is heavy as fuck. I hope this helps.

Is there an exhaust manifold you guys would recommend for a stock turbo car? I'm getting my gf's car back together after the exhaust valves touched the pistons, and found the original manifold had a crack in the flex section. I'd prefer to replace it with something cheap that'll maybe flow a bit better and not have a stupid crack-prone flex section.

I'd prefer something made out of cast iron. I've never seen a 304SS last on a turbo daily driver, and the 321 and 316 manifolds tend to be pricey. It looks like most of the aftermarket options are built to fit larger turbos, so I'm guessing I'd be best off with an eBay stocker?

Thanks for any help.

BUMP!!

I read most of this thread and did my research before i swapped to the corksport turbo because i figured if i had the turbo out i might as well replace that ugly stock manifold. looking over all the options i could hear my credit card screaming NO from my wallet.

then i was looking at the XSPower website and i couldn't say no. they were less than half the price of everything else.

I installed it with the turbo and it mounted right up with no issues, and really a quality product. super happy with it. if you're looking for one like i was, i would recommend them 100%
