Default Oil Catch Can Recommendations

I was reading that a oil catch can is a good idea.

I have seen them priced anywhere from $100 to $300.

I was wondering if you guys could give me some recommendations?

I would like something that I could empty without having to get under the car but I dont want to break the bank.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

But not too old. Like maybe a couple months. Definitely not more than 6 months.

Bump for proper answers.

I'd been leaning toward the SSP kit myself because the catch can itself is beautiful but from some reading, it doesn't seem to be a complete kit.

FWIW I have the SSP catch can, and it's a beautiful piece; it looks great sitting on Justin's workbench. I'm hoping it works as well as it looks.

I too am in the market for an OCC. Each kit out there seems to have something I don't like. I don't like how much $$ the SSP is and the fact that you must purchase additional hardware. The corksport one is iffy, reading thru their thread it seems like they are still figuring things out with their design. I am leaning toward the MD cans, but I wish it was vented.

Those are my thoughts to the T. Nothing seems to be THE quintessential OCC kit and it's pissing me off lol. Maybe I'll just run it all custom

I thought about doing a custom one, would be the most cost effective. The only thing that gets me is the whole PCV routing system. To me it seems like a big headache, I recall viewing a thread earlier today where DJ and superxskaterx were still discussing the best way to route them. I wish there was an end all-be all solution.

That was his replacement can I believe. Not saying it's entirely corksport's fault, but between that and their new design that routes into the TIP I'm still a bit skeptical about pulling the trigger on it.

Here are my thoughts on the popular catch cans that I have dealt with.

1. Corksport - Decent price, shitty hoses, poor drain solution. Comes with an oil level sight.

2. James Barone - A little Pricey but contains excellent hardware and comes with everything you need.

3. SSP - Only for those who have high crankcase pressure or are running way over stock boost. A bit pricey, poor drain solution, needs extra hardware to complete installation.

I'm leaning towards custom for the simple fact I'll be able to run -AN line through almost the entire thing except for off the valve cover

I think we are all in the same boat right now. Lol. I'm going to play with piecing one together, using the ideas I like best about each. lol

What does ssp use over the others, that makes it better for high boost

I have a JBR OCC stage 2, installed last week at 2,500 miles. Solid construction, and everything provided for install.

Have not had long enough to see any accumilation.

Only complaint I have heard is the drain is off the side/bottom vs. bottom. So maybe it does not completely drain off, I figure as long as gunk not going onto valves = win.

I can reach a shallow cup under the drain from the top, with an SRI. About 2 inches between belly pan and drain. Only other suggestion I have, I would go with a can that is welded vs. glued.

It vents to the atmosphere and it is twice as big as most of the other catch cans.

I set it up to run to the pcv (gutted) and the crankcase breathers so blowby doesn't get into the Turbo Inlet Pipe, intercooler, or the intake manifold. It is nice not having oil dripping out of your intercooler, boost tubes, and throttle boddy.

Im running the corksport new one. I will say the tubes are fairly cheap. If you do not trim them perfectly they will continue to tear if not on the fitting correctly.

I have had it on for about 2 weeks and its already halfway filled according to the view window. I wish it had a better drain plug so it wasnt such a task to drain it. But other than that seems to be working well

Personally I can't justify spending almost double on an oil catch can because it has a vent. Does it really make that much of a difference in long term performance versus other OCC's?

Well you need to be carefull about using a vented catch can. If hooked up improperly, it can suck in unmetered air (such as hooking it up between the PCV valve and the intake manifold).

If your plan is to hook up a catch can between the PCV and Intake Manifold, any of the non vented catch cans will do you.

I thought the SSP was designed to hook up between the PCV valve and the VC vent valve?

I was going to go with Corksport, but the recent problems drove me away. I ended up getting a JBR OCC during black friday sale.

All of JBRs products are great and I never see any failures, so I'm pretty confident it will be a great OCC. The side drain really isn't that big of a deal.

It is. It is basically used by people who want to bypass the entire PCV system.

Were you burning it or draining it from your catch can?

Sent via excessive blowby gases from my racecar.

I am interested to see if anybody has any thoughts on this as well. Sure doesn't include mounting brackets, drain valve, or hoses with it though...

I ordered a Jbr occ during black friday sales. From the research I did the Corksport quality was questionable, SSP is expensive incomplete and overkill for my application. Jbr makes quality stuff so I went with it.

The Mat Damon OCC is supposed to be really good, but I E-mailed him 9 days ago and haven't heard back. Won't get my money.

I just went through his site DM | Home

and he emailed me the next day saying it was shipped and that I was being reimbursed $10 for shipping (black friday sale). I've heard he isn't good with replying to emails....

I recommend getting one before gunking up your motor. My MD has stuff in it every time I change oil. Sight glass isn't important to me I want to see the gunk in the oil pan not the can.
