Default oil catch cans

i saw that the gen1s had a shitty pcv system almost requiring a catch can, do te genpus suffer from the same problem? and would they benefit a somewhat stock genpu in any way?

yes it will benefit from a OCC. the crankcase vent is routed to the intake mani so any blow-by will gunk up the intake mani and valves. Since direct injected motors don't inject into the intake mani like port injected, there is no fuel to wash off the gunk. It also vents out of the valve cover and is routed to the intake. You can put a catch can or a breather filter also.

It's basically just the catch can and two hoses. However, Matt includes a check valve with his and comes pre-assembled with hoses cut to length. It's good to support a member of the forum who is doing this for our platform.

I'm not sure if buying a can from an online site will include hoses or just the can. I do no think they come with the check valve.

I have had Matt's kit for some time, works fine, I drain it when I change my oil, mounted on the tranny, drilled hole in CS skidplate.

They have had one for a long time now. I'm sure it's not as high a priority as their FMIC is. But I don't want to assume. Go with Matt's, like I said, it's good to support the community and those select individuals who are designing parts for us.

the saikou catch cans are baffled. It makes the gases go through a media so that it condenses and catches more of the water, oil, and fuel. Most catch cans out there are not baffled. You can use a non baffled can but it just won't do as a good of a job as a baffled one. If you going to spend $80 and up on a brand name can that is not baffled .. might as just get the saikou cans from matt.

You can turn a non-baffled catch can into a baffled one by adding stainless steel wool kitchen scrubbing pads. I did it to my catch can.

how many of you arent running with catch cans and do you have any problems?

and where would you put it? between the valve cover and the intake or between the pcv and intake manifold? i was thinking between the pcv...

also if you dont run a catch can what all will happen obviously the oil gas and shit will go back into the intake but what will that cause now and down the road?

Take the lines off the motor and attach to the can. From the can to the motor. You can have a drain cock or hose so you can drain as needed.

Things that can happen vary from nothing more then nasty oil spitting out of the exhaust and getting the bumper dirty. Same with the intake manifold/piping. Worse case is you boost up, lift the head and pressurize the system and crack rings.

I have yet to install mine. My car runs fine, however, I have never taken off the intake manifold to see the possible 'damage.'

Most put it between the PCV and the intake manifold, however, Lenny just made a thread of what he emptied. His is running from the valve cover to his intake. You could essentially run both, but the most popular, and usually the most beneficial, will be to run it from the PCV.

You pointed out what will happen without one. Being we are not port injected (with fuel injectors spraying fuel into the intake manifold), we do not get the benefit of the fuel 'cleaning' up all that gunk. With the OCC, all that gunk will go into the can and air will go back into the IM, therefore, no contaminants will be going back into your IM. Over time there will be a layer a gunk build up which will decrease performance and cause an increase in detonation.

Most likely not. Remember the fuel is injected directly to the cylinders. It is a "dry" manifold.

I was actually going to start fabricating a catch can this week with filters on it as well. Going to get some aluminum tomorrow.

Check this out. Nataphen opened up some of his intake stuff after only 5000 miles. It is pretty nasty in there.
There are also some pics of what he and I have drained from our cc's.
Do you need an OCC for gen 2?

The junk doesn't get mixed back in with the fuel, it is in the air. That is the purpose of the cc, to pull it out of the air.
Otherwise all the crap gets sucked through your intake system.

Took me about 1 1/2 hrs.
You could do it in a lot less time if you have someone with tiny hands around. There is not much space up by the IM/PCV.

That's quite a bit. How do we get in touch with Matt?

His has a check valve and all hoses cut to length and pre assembled.

I'm not sure if buying a can from an online site will include hoses or just the can. I do not think they come with the check valve.

If you going to spend $80 and up on a brand name can that is not baffled .. might as just get the saikou cans from matt.

It's quality tube that doesn't disintegrate from the fluid/vapor it's carrying nor compress under vacuum. That check valve is also a lot beefier than a second $20 OEM green plastic PCV you'd have to get so you don't pressurize the can.

It was a bitch and a half of an install for me but it's worth it.

The only problems you'll have once it's installed correctly? If you don't close the drain up, you'll have a rough idle and eventually throw a P0171. Don't ask how I know.

I drained about 4oz of shit after 1700 miles in four months. Glad that's not flying through my intake manifold.

Default Oil catch can

Thanx to all, I have now read and have found Matt's website and already set him an email detailing my request.

Oh, and I have already donated some time ago. . .
