Speed 3 Gen 2 tech package light mods

Hello Guys!

I'm new to the forums and a new mazdaspeed 3 enthusiast. I hope this post is in the right section.

I haven't picked up a speed 3 yet but im looking to grab one by end of summer, beginning of fall.

In the mean time ive been working a project, i used to do custom headlights on the side and ive always waned to do a custom job on Speed 3 tech package headlights. So right now i have opened a set of speed 3 technology package lights and have modded the stock projector with sharpen the cut off, as well laser etched a custom design and did a passive demon eye mod, as well as led demon eyes. To my surprise i discovered behind the triangle section of the lights cover the DRL section, there might be space to add a second projector. I shall post pics for your viewing and progress here shortly.

Yeah man idk, i used photobucket years ago and never had issues, i come back and its charging you now for storage and all sorts of shit smh, ill reupload these in a bit using the insert image feature. so just copy the URL from the pic and thats it?

The Majin M is so dope, i cant wait til i finish them, havent had much time, 7 day work weeks between 2 jobs suck!

So the above photo shows the projector cut off stock and unmodified. as you can see its a bit blurry with not much color, In the back of the projector, the reflector bowl where the hid light reflects, is dull and burned.

After opening the projector and swapping the reflector bowl with a fresh one, and a bit more tuning, i was able to get a better cut off.

I finally found a better image hosting site that allows me to adjust the picture sizes.

On to more pictures! So i opened the projector again and performed what is called the Passive Demon eye mod. basically you spray a specific portion of the inside of a projector with a color paint of your choosing, and in the day time at the right angle, it gives off the reflective property of that color through the lens!! i chose yellow!!

And i did a little bit more tweaking to the projector lens for a sharper cut off, still needs a bit more work.

Its hard to say, typically a job like this could take me a couple days to maybe even 2 weekends or so. But as i said before i work 7 days a week and 2 jobs so my time is so limited, its insane!!! like i wanna work on the lights tonight but something else came up. Either tomorrow or sunday im going to attempt to cut and fit the other projector in the DRL.

If the lights come out the way i want and all goes well, i MIGHT provide the service.

MY phone crashed earlier in the year, or i would have posted more of my work.

This is the first time ive done mazda lights so im making my way around them, opening them was a total pain cause i really didnt know where all the hidden screws were but after i found them all opening was easy, so idk ill see. If these come out great, and my time frees up i might offer a limited round of services.

Ha thanks man, that was my old baby, that car was no slouch.

It had high compression pistons, 11.1 Wiseco, BC stage 2 cams, ported and polished heads, valves and springs done, 4" intake, 3 exhaust, 3 inch custom y pipe, 560cc GTR injectors, 320 aem pump, 350z haltech with custom PNP harness, the list was endless. that car was like 340+whp 333Ft lbs Tq. that thing was a monster. Low beam projectors were Lexus non AFS projectors, custom tuned, high beams were mini H1 projectors.

Hello Fellas, back again with a few more updates.

Got a weekend off out of my 7 day work week, and spent a few hours in the garage.

Basically what i did this weekend, is cut up the DRL section to mock fit the mini H1 projector. I also removed the oem stock projector and swapped in the Modded stock projector with trimmed cutoff shield and clear lens for more light, but ill let all the pictures do the talking.

These are just rough drafts for now of how it should look.

At some point ill start on the driver side light and send updates, next step is to paint inside the H1 projectors yellow, mod the driver side projector, then aim and mount the H1 projectors to make sure they are aligned with the oem projector beam..

End goal is to run all four projectors as low beams, stay tuned!

Its a bit of work, honestly the part im gonna be stuck on is cutting the shrouds to fit over the projectors, mainly the one in the DRL section of the light. the low beam oem projector, that shouldnt be tooo hard, once the projectors are mounted in, shrouds will be cut to fit, then i can paint everything and mount halos.

But i made some big progress last night. I added the Mini H1 projectors into the DRL section of my tech package headlights and mounted them.

Next step will be cutting the shrouds to fit over the projectors.

That looks really good. Maybe I should try this myself while I save up for actual parts. I think I still have a cracked driver side headlight from when I originally bought my car so I might fuck around with it to get comfy with it so I can take the good ones apart without breaking then. Looking forward to more pics. If I end up playing around with my light I'll probably end up referencing to your post.

Projects like this arent for the faint of heart. I used to do custom headlight work on the side, so i have no problems using my dremel cutting and grinding away at these lights.

So proceed with caution! lol What you could do, is mod the Oem projectors like i did, remove the silver shroud and go with a custom one from www.Theretrofitsource.com, add some halos, paint and boom done, you can keep it flashy yet simple, the adding a second projector thing is just something i always liked doing. I love the look of Quad projector setups.

Yea I most likely wont be trying to do the second projector on my headlights. Just gonna stick to something simpler like you said. I might try the second projector on the junk headlight I got. Dremeling and grinding doesn't scare me much thankfully. I've been doing body work since I was about 14 years old so I've gotten fairly comfortable with all that type of work. Which is exactly why I wanna keep it to the junk headlight LOL. Looking at your pictures it looks like the type of thing where a mistake that isn't a big deal 99% of the time would fuck your day up royally here.

Cool, do you have Tech package lights? If you do and they are HID, those projectors can be modded for more light, that right there is worth it. Get a clear lens swap from the site i provided above, with lens spacers and tune the projectors for more light. Add a new shroud and halos, boom done!

Was pretty busy so haven't been on here in a while. I don't have the tech package so I got regular halogen bulbs I'm pretty sure. It's fine with me though. I'm in the city so I don't really need super bright headlights(It's also a meter of courtesy I guess. I hate when people have those E-bay LEDs on full blast in the middle of the city with a near 24/7 bumper to bumper traffic, especially since the roads are plenty lit anyway). I decided to stick to just trying to do the ring thing around the lens.
The right light is the original one with the regular grey/chrome ring around the lens but I had to replace the left one and ended up getting one with the bluish tinted ring around the lens. So I'm stuck trying to pick a color. My ms3 is white with the badges and all the gunmetal parts painted black(grill, mirrors, etc.), and I'm pretty sure I'm gonna stick to that scheme as long as I daily the car. So I don't know what to go for. I was thinking of doing them black also to fit the rest but idk if that would look good.

If you have the halogen version of the lights, you can do an easy Mini H1 projector swap, HID over halogen any day. i live in NYC but i still love my projector HIDS. i figure if youre gonna open the lights, go all out, do a halo ring up frontt, a custom shroud to put a halo in the rear, demon eyes etc etc. make the work of removing and opening the lights worth it.

Hopefully the next update will be all demon eyes installed, chrome stripped and ready for paint. This is just a rough draft, ignore the imperfections, they will be repaired with quick steel, sanded smoothed, and prepped for paint as well.

Excited to say im 90% complete, just assembling lights and running wires after prep work and painting. ill let the work speak for itself, picture and video heavy!!

I did clear clear primer followed by 1K Black metallic flake paint, followed by colorshfit clear coat and a final 2K clear Coat.

Hahaha thanks man, i used to do custom headlights as a side gig before i got my second job, so i have about 6 to 7 years of experience with this, although this is the first time i ever did mazda lights. Honestly, its not THAAT difficult if you do the oem projector only, do you have tech package lights? or Non Tech? im gonna button up a few things and hopefully have them closed up by mid next week.

In a way its also easy, you could do a projector swap. Swap out the non hid projector for an HID one, put an aftermarket shroud, throw a halo in the back, paint it, BAM done.

Alright Ladies and gents, i added the color chasing strips and partially put the lenses on to see how they look "closed". ill let the pics speak for themselves!

Wires in the back have been ran, just need to seal things up in the back, close headlights and swap headlight harnesses and hids on to these lights then i can install on the car, 99% done!

All Halos tested, the halos in the rear on the second set of projectors in the rear had to be removed, the wouldnt fit with the shroud on, so im just running one up front and the other in the low beam section.

Looks great! Are you planning on re-clear coating the housing or at least PPF? My oem ones yellowed/peeled after 4 years. I'd hate to go through the work you did and have the housing yellow on me

What is PPF? So the passenger side light is actually a brand new OEM in box headlight i got from a guy, he bought if from the dealership but ended up not needing it. he tried to return it but because he opened the box they wouldnt take it. i got that for $300!!!! The driver side light lens is a brand new lens from a pair i bought of a site base in china that makes headlight lenses. Both have the clear coat on them already. what i am going to do is compound them, then polish and add Lamin-X Clear covers. They go right over the headlight lens and protect it from UV damage.

They are precut to fit our cars too, so perfect fitment.

You can wet sand yours and polish them back to brand new, just add a UV based clear coat and they will look like brand new dealership lights.
