2013 Ford Focus ST vs 2013 Mazdaspeed3 : Car Reviews


I don't know if anyone has seen this yet. They don't actually show the laps so who knows, could be just like the motortrend test where probst farts around the track in the MS3. THey pretty much reiterate everything we all know, ST seats are awesome, E-diff is the poop, MS3>ST. It also claims the 0 to 60 on the speed3 is 6.5 seconds?

I'd still like to see a comparo where the mazdaspeed has a RSB or slightly wider/grippier tires.

I love how they say the ms3 runs out of power after 6k rpms but fail to mention how the turbo in the st is actually smaller and while yes, it does give its torque down low, it's inefficient much sooner than the k04 in our cars.

To me the curves look pretty similar, maybe the smaller turbo spools a bit faster in the ST and the gearing is a bit longer. It would be nice to get some "in house" comparison runs, same day, same track and see what happens.

Very true, there's a guy that goes to my friend's college with a 08 gti, and when I asked him about his mods and power he told me an intake and apr tune. he said he's probably making 290hp 330tq. I told him b.s. He told me those were crank hp numbers, not wheel hp....

Both of my GTIs are more reliable than my Mazda, and none of my cars are stock, so you can do that simple math

Why would you get offended? We are talking about great hot hatches here... They all have their strengths and weaknesses but at the end they are great little cars.

The thing I don't get is how offended and butthurt MS people are about the ST. With years of development, zoom zoom booms and big turbo builds MS people should feel lucky and almost honored to have been the benchmark for Ford to make the ST. As a former First gen MS3 owner I can say the ST is a great little car, yeah it is not as fast as the MS3 on a straight but holy cow it slaps the MS3 across the face around corners.

I do agree that ST owners need to be schooled but not in an asshole way like most MS driver want to. They need to be schooled about turbo setup, ways to mod, etc...

I still find it funny how MS drivers feel the need to prove themselves to a platform that just came out. To say what? "Ha! I beat a stock car with less HP with my highly modded car. I'm the shit"

I like the ST, but like the rawness of the MS3 more.

I think the problem is all these magazine reviews seem fishy. Before the ST the MS3 was going 0 to 60 at ~6 with 1/4s around 14 flat. Now all of the sudden the ST comes out, and a half second is being added onto the MS3 times, and the ST is just so much better.

I've never driven an ST and probably have only seen 3 in my area so I have no issues with the cars or drivers. I'm sure the ST feels great when cornering, but it only pulls like 0.01 g more in some tests. 2013 Ford Focus ST First Test - Motor Trend
And suddenly the ST is like a second + faster around the same track. It seems like a load of BS to me.

Both the ST and MS3 have some compromises, but I'd rather deal with the MS3's than the StT's. If it were me and I wanted to change, I'd skip the ST all together and wait for the RS to possibly show up. If they do the RS right, I would consider selling the MS3 for it. Then again, if a new MS3 comes along, I might just have to trade in for that too.

I just love how the reviewers are baffled that a fwd can kick its tail around a corner..... uhhh yea, a ms3 could do the same if the computer controlled the fucking brakes like on the st. lol

I don't like how they put together the st, i.e. engine, turbo being small. but around corners, the computer controlled braking obviously is working wonders. Who knows what would happen if you fry that part of your ecu though...

Everyday I'm ready to be schooled my friend, it is part of growing as a person.
My ST is stock so most likely I will lose if we do a roll but I think it's a good way to have fun, meet another car enthusiast and have a good chuckle on a Friday. I have nothing to prove really.

Never been a fan of magazine reviews since I don't do 0 to 60 or try to pull Gs going around the playground in my development. If the car is fun to drive, quick and looks good then is worth driving it.

^^ that's true, you don't pull G's around baby mommas with strollers in cul de sacs, but you still need some way to compare cars that are fun to drive right?

@DVM17 I think with just a RSB, you can get the MS3 tail to swing. But yea, I'm pretty sure what happens with the torque vectoring is the inside wheel is braking, so that it acts like a pivot point (in retarded terms).
