Default Moderate knock with new OTS + tune

I flashed my Stratified OTS + map this afternoon, and went for a drive. I drove about 40 easy miles prior to going WOT and taking this log. The car felt great (already the best $50 I've ever spent), but I did notice some knock (and increasing BATS?) around 5k RPM in 4th. I should point out, this log is a 3rd gear WOT with a shift and pull into 4th at line 80. Ambient temp was ~88 degrees. If this knock isn't something to worry about or is normal for shifting during a pull feel free to toss this thread. Thanks.

My S-OTS+ flash tunes did the same thing, I was experiencing moderate knock while using them throughout the RPM range. If you want the tune dialed in, you really just need to get a full tune. Its honestly money well spent.

Might be your BATs. What's your high BAT flag set to? Are you hitting the AFRs you are commanding when there is no KR? You may need to revisit your MAF cal

You probably need to watch it and see if it's consistent. Try a run with lower BATs or add some E (or Meth) to your tank and see if it's still there. Was the road bumpy, hit a lane divider, etc?

I would probably set your KR decay to a quicker value, seems to be taking a long time for it to go away. You need to be able to see if it is a single event or several. Anything loose on the engine can make a lot of noise at those rpms, check for loose stuff

Good luck

Well to begin...I can't look at the tune as I do not have ATR. Yes I know that makes this difficult. There's a chance the road was bumpy. I'll take another log tomorrow and try to find another road. I'm just trying to see if this is something people have seen before. If it does persist, I'll try contacting Stratified. Otherwise I may have to swap back to the stock TMIC and run the Cobb tune again for awhile.

Def high bats. Try getting a log at night when it's cool out straight one gear pull from 2800ish rpm to redline, 3rd or 4th gear. No shifting.

Ya I'll get a 4th gear pull done tomorrow (during the day and evening). I did find this quote from a 3 year old thread in BAT's referencing.

Additionally, I doubt it's an installation error, but if it persists, I'll swap IC's again and check. Thanks.

Everything looks fine in the log except some high BAT induced knock. You can try getting gas from several different stations to see if it cures the issue. The knock is relatively mild and slightly better fuel will take care of it. Alternatively you can get one of our datalog reviews and we can adjust the tune for your fuel.

I intended on getting a custom tune eventually just not until I changed out my downpipe. I may have to do a review, if the you do believe it's gas related. Attached are two more logs. I took 3 more today about 2 minutes apart from each other (datalog 18 looked very similar to 19). There's high knock with high BAT's in the first, but next to no knock with even higher BAT's in the 2nd (this is why I'm still confused). I should add that ambient temp was ~77. Again, thanks for the help guys.

Have you checked for leaks? When you hit the throttle, you go lean, and it seems to vary some thru-out the pull. Also, at the end, it comes back to 14 or so combined with LTFTs near 10.... Maybe a small leak. I would check around your BPV and PCV plumbing....

When I talk about high BATs, I mean somewhere around 125 deg. I believe that's where the high BAT flag is set. If you cross that line, not sure how the ECU reacts.

given your setup and how things are running i'm going to say that the tune needs to be toned down. I would expect less timing given the boost pressure, or less boost given the timing. Either hardware/gas needs to change or the tune needs to be toned down IMO

The other option is noise, there was minor kr (noise) at the same rpm on log 19 where log 17 had higher knock numbers. considering the coincidence the rpm could be causing excessive rattling with a loose tmic or something of the sort causing inconsistent readings at the same rpm

The TMIC is likely loose. It's missing the nut for the post nearest the firewall, but I didn't pay it much mind since I'd never seen this behavior in the stock TMIC and the pull in 3rd didn't show knock at the same RPM (and the TMIC is still sturdy). Additionally, I don't see how this would affect BAT's at all, but then again I'm not very knowledgeable in this area. I'll source another nut.

I honestly think it's a hardware issue something is probably loose under the hood pick up a set of nuts from vatozone and tighten up the tmic and see how that goes. Try changing gas station or throwing some e85/meth in tank. Some more logs. And like someone mentioned flat smooth road.

snailD is correct - it's unlikely this is noise. It is fuel that is not good enough to support the requests in the tune. So either the fuel has to be better or tune needs an adjustment for the fuel you are running.

Screwed down the TMIC. @Lex; if you're confident this can be fixed through a touch up I'll do it. I'm on the fence about just getting the custom tune, but again, I'd prefer to wait on that.

From the looks of it this is not noise you're dealing with - it's knock and yes this can be addressed via a datalog review/flash tune update.

Just flashed and ran the first revision (I did order a datalog review). The car drives great, BAT's seem to be better, and the knock is still present. It's not as bad, but it still pops up. I should add however, that this was done on the same tank of gas. I'l be filling it up shortly and will post if anything changes.

Just posting to keep track of my progress. I just flashed and ran my 2nd revision on a fresh tank of Shell 93. Cyrus (my tuner) says he's pulled timing a bit as well as slightly lowering boost in a couple areas (again I don't have ATR so I can't see this). The knock is still present, however.

Sounds like it may be time to start looking at other culprits. ie. injector seals, other rattles, mounts, suspension, etc.

Good luck

Well if we're gonna start opening the floor to other options, in short, the car wasn't treated properly by the PO. I'm trying to correct all of his mistakes, but it's possible I've missed a few things. I've had the car for 1.5 years and 15k miles (95k on the clock). Also bear in mind, I only began seeing knock when I put on the TMIC and immediately flashed the OTS +.

Suspension: Brand new FSD's, mounts, bushings, and endlinks. I'm 80% sure it's time for some new LCA's, but again, I haven't seen this knock before.

The TMM and PMM I believe are original to the car, the RMM is the JBR 70-duro with now about 30k on it.

Injector Seals: I have no idea. Again, they are likely original to the car.

I haven't noticed any rattles, and the car drives and performs great. If the next revision yields the same, I'll swap TMIC's and go back to my previous tune to see if anything changes. Thanks.

Send the new set of logs in. We can adjust things a little further via the tune.

I sent two more logs on this revision to Cyrus on Thursday, would you like me to send them elsewhere as well?

Alright, this is my third and final revision. It's more knock than I'm really comfortable with, but it's within the spec of being <2.0. The car feels great, and performs phenomenally, and I'm still quite happy with it. As soon as I can get my downpipe in (or someone in NATOR MI has an install day), I look forward to working with @Lex; for a custom tune. Thanks everyone for the help.
