OEM MS3 brakes = Volvo S60 brakes?

Read in some review once that the brakes in the MS3 were lifted from the Volvo S60. Does this mean then we can use some parts made for Volvos as well?

yes this is correct, in addition if you by brakes at autozone,oreily,advanced auto parts they will give you the wrong brakes as there supplier has mistakenly put the same part number for the reg mazda 3 for the speeed

I am a Volvo tech and the S60 brakes are different from the Ms3, they seem like they are XC90 or the new S80 or XC70 front brakes, but have not fully compared them. I'll try to get some pics net time i have one apart.

Thanks, that would be interesting to know. If it's S60 brakes, I wonder if the R brakes would work too.

when I coundt find the correct pads i matched some up at NAPA with volvo pads (with pics) looked same?? but they where going to have to order them and my brakes where real bad so i just got from dealer..

The brakes on my MS3 look identical to the brakes on my Buddy's Volvo S40. The S40 shares its basic platform with the Mazda 3 too.

I remember reading that they were the same as Volvo S40 brakes, which matches what Boother is saying.

If I recall Mazda used the largest brakes they could find that used the Mazda3/Volvo S40/Ford Focus platform and those were on the S40.

The S60 is a whole different platform so it makes no sense to me that they would be S60 brakes.

Since I have seen an S40 side-by-side with my car, I can say with 100% certainty that the brakes are the same.

The S60 just might use them as well though....so both might be correct, but C&D is definitely correct.

I just ordered pair of front pads from a 2007 s40. They are full oem as the mazda. Ford is part of volvo and mazda. If you look behind the pads it says fomoco(Ford Motor Company). Best part is they are full oem same as the mazdaspeed3 and they cost $58. I'm going to put it on on friday and i would let you guys know.

Also on the s40 T5 FWD the front calipers are diffrent than ms3, But i guess the pads are the same. The calipers on the s40 is the same one on the mz3.


I don't know why car and driver say the calipers are from a s40 but here is a picture of s40 T5 FWD pic

Is this the same caliper as a ms3? I don't think so. But maybe the pads are the same.

The pad material is probably NOT the same, I had an S40 2.4i and I got some nasty fade when I was braking downhill.

Here is the xc90 volvo. The calipers are same as ms3 and also the rotors are 12.5" same as ms3. I'm going to get the pads for xc90 and try them also.

i'm 95% sure is the xc90. The matrial on the pads are diffrent also. The xc90 is a heavy suv and is 300hp. They also have lots of brake dust on them.

The turbo awd version of the S40 100% uses the same caliper as the MS3. I have seen the cars side-by-side and they are identical. The other versions of the S40 use the same front caliper as the regular Mazda 3.

Here are photos of the Mazda 6 MPS (Mazdaspeed 6) front pads.

Very similar to the Volvo S70/S80 ATE calipers but not quite the same shape.

The Volvo XC90s have the same shape pads but may have mounting springs on the outer pads.

I am doing more research.....

Kevin, Well the pads for the MS6 that the guy in post 33 shows are in pad shape and part# the same as the MS3. If you look at the inboard pad (the one with the rosebud clip) at the very far top right and left of the pad. You can see that there is a small quarter circle of the metal removed. The S60 pad goes straight across, so you may need to grind that. Also if you look at how the sides of the pad taper in towards the radius at the bottom, the S60 pad does this at a different angle. Lastly the overall height is about 1/8" less, so you would have 1/8" of unswept rotor near the hub. The rosebud clip that goes into the piston is slightly different, the S60 pad may be a little loose but the clip is just to aid in installation. Now for the outboard pad, the one shown has no clip on the back. Hawk makes the pad with a clip, however Ferodo does not but if those are factory pads shown there I do not see an issue. Other than that the outer pads taper is off just like the inner. Looking at all of these pads on a table next to each other I would say that if the rosebud clips do not factor into this at all, you can make these S60 pads fit with less that 15 minutes of grinding. I do not have the Ferodo pad in stock at the moment, but I can order it. They ship from Italy so it will be a few weeks. If you want to see it for yourself, in your hands I would go to your local Kragen, Pep Boys, Autozone.... Buy a front pad for a 2002 Volvo S60 w/285mm diameter front rotors, and compare them. I am sure if they are not installed they can be returned. The reason these are slightly different is not because of the caliper, but rather the carrier that the pads ride in when the caliper is bolted on. The calipers are probably the same design as the Volvo, if not the same exact caliper. Hope this helps. Chris

So, to clarify (regarding the MS3):

The MS3 uses the same calipers/rotor size as the Volvo S40 T5 AWD (NOT the S60, and NOT the XC90 - the XC90 appears to use the same caliper as the MS3, but the rotor size is 316 mm instead of the MS3's size of 320 mm).
