The roll is placed under control by the spring rate intensified within the range that has less impact on a ride quality, so that the vehicle height can be brought down by approx. 30 mm. Bilstein B4 Gas Heavy Duty Shocks/Struts

For most vehicles including full-size sedans, SUVs and trucks, Bilstein performance shock absorbers and struts have been designed to provide improved handling and ride control without sacrificing comfort. Fade-free performance is achieved by using high gas pressure, monotube design with a large diameter shock body. The HD Series is ideal for heavy hauling and occasional off-road use.

The Bilstein Principle
All Bilstein gas pressure struts/inserts and gas pressure shock absorbers operate on the same principle. They are manufactured with the rod pointing down into the strut tube, thereby utilizing the thicker, stouter body portion of the shock absorber to dissipate side loads. Consequently, due to the increased diameter and surface of the pressure tube, the Bilstein gas pressure strut/insert or shock is better suited to take increased side loads when compared with the conventional version.

Additional advantages, based on development strongly influenced by the motorsport industry, include greater stability, better road handling, and accurate steering. This combined with extremely high quality manufacturing and materials, means Bilsteins will last approximately four times as long as Original Equipment.

Battling Heat Build Up
Conventional shocks trap the heat within the shock body and prevent adequate dissipation, making them prone to heat build up, fade and eventual failure.

Bilstein's patented design allows the excessive heat from the oil to transfer to the outer surface of the shock body and dissipate more efficiently. The dividing piston also permits the oil to expand as heat builds, preventing aeration (foaming) and viscosity loss. This allows the shock to maintain full damping characteristics as temperatures rise.

The tube of a Bilstein gas pressure shock or strut is fabricated using a special extrusion method. This process achieves an extremely tight peak-to-valley tolerance and maintains consistent wall thickness. Bilstein's seamless monotube design provides superior tube strength while maximizing heat dissipation and shock life.

Ride Comfort and Performance Without Compromise
The piston head design allows independent tuning of the compression and rebound damping forces to provide optimum ride comfort and performance without compromise. It features fewer parts than most conventional designs. The product's simple, yet exceptionally functional digressive design contributes to the extreme durability and long life of Bilstein Shock Absorbers.

Better Built
Bilstein's shock bodies are precision formed through a unique seamless extrusion process. This provides superior strength along with high finish tolerances. The shock body is then treated with a special paint finish durable enough to withstand grueling 240-hour salt spray tests. The finished body is mated with a solid, induction-hardened steel chrome plated and polished shaft, machined valving components and highest quality seals.

A full length height adjustable suspension kit that puts sports performance first with features like a hard setting mono tube damper and linear rate race spring, and an aluminum upper mount with enhanced bush*. H&R continues its innovative design and manufacture of new suspension technologies with the introduction of their Street Performance Coil-Over Kits. Street Performance Coil-Over Kits lower an average of 1.0" to 2.5" for optimized performance and ride.

Blueprinted as coil-overs (not just a modified shock body), the H&R units are hand-assembled in Germany by H&R Speziafedern under rigid ISO 9001 and German TÜV standards. Strict attention to the function of the complete suspension system is the number one design priority.

Like the Coil-Over Suspension Kits, the Street Performance Coil-Over Kits' threaded body means that the outside of the strut or shock tubes are threaded like a bolt. KSport makes coilovers as well. Believe Swift makes springs too or were planning on it not 100% sure

Also didn't see Cobb springs on there, though they are discontinued, they make still be floating around. Would be good for a reference point if anything.

Twin Tube Internal Design - A Twin Tube internal design is utilized for increased piston stroke for improved handling and comfort during street use. Another major feature of the Twin Tube design is that is more durable in the case of damage to the actual damper body.

Ride Height Adjustable - Vehicle ride height adjustable via a threaded shock body and adjustable spring seat. The threaded sleeve is welded to the actual shock body and then Zinc coated for added protection. TEIN engineers have performed vigorous testing to ensure the best possible position and range of the spring seat to ensure the most adjustability. Pretty good list. Couple thoughts:
- B4's should not be used in the rear, per Bilstein.
- There are quite a few applications - mostly coilovers - that are not MS3 specific. Might be good to clarify which are and aren't.

Couple of clarifications/comments:

Bilstein B4s are not the "HDs" that people know as "Heavy Duty" (and in most applications actually utilize a twin-tube damper rather than monotubes like the B6s and B8s).

The B6s are what are known as "HDs".

The B8s are the Bilstein "Sports" (with the shorter shaft).


Also, Raceland Coilvers have no end-user adjustibility in either their compression or rebound circuits. They are simply height-adjustable.

@Nliiitend1: read your thread about breaking down the different coilovers and how they are made essentially... great read, definitely learned a thing or two, and have sense decided to go a different route on what my suspension setup will entail. might cost me a little more $, but overall will be a much more reliable, stable, and tested setup.

Why are the rates on the Progress and Hotchkis rsb so out of whack? Do they use a different kind of measurement? From what I've read, the stock rsb rate is 470lb/in. That means a rate of 2,030lb/in (the stiffest setting on hotchkis rear) would be a 432% increase over the stock rate? Also, does anyone know what compatibility issues there are with sway bars from the Gen1 on the Gen2?

kind of a dumb Q, but does anyone out there just get Koni Yellows for the front, and springs for the front and drop the front to even out the cars gap? I'm not opposed to doing all 4 corners, just curious. Guys do it on Subarus.

There's also Tein Stech Springs....
Drop: F: 1" / R .6"
Spring Rates: F: 2.9kg/mm, 163lb/in / R: 4.3kg/mm , 241lb/in

I bought it, not knowing it have such low spring rate on the front.. =| Oh well. installing them tomorrow and see how it goes from there.

The Racing Beat FSB for the Genpu Mazda 3 2.5 is probably the largest front bar made. I have one laying on the garage floor and will go measure it for you.

Also the Whiteline FSB is 2-way adjustable, it is what I replaced the Racing Beat bar with.

For the archives. Here's a set of pu specific H&R street performance coilovers. Model#52604
Note: Unlike making genone shocks fit with a longer bolt the lower rear shock bushing is the correct width so the stock bolt can be reused (shown). The center of the endlink bracket bolt hole on the front struts is 8.5" from the bottom of the strut body. On the oem struts the bolt hole is 6.5". The H&R use Bilstein dampers/valving. The strut and shock bodies are Stainless steel. The finish of these coilovers is impeccable. No short cuts taken in the machining processes at all. $12each Gound control rear bumpstops also shown.

Thanks for sharing. I responded in another thread but I'll post here as well. On the Gen 1 (or at least mine) the endlink bracket is the same height as OEM (from the LCA alignment bracket). Also, H&R recommends retaining the OEM rear jounce bumper to help maintain the collective spring rate. Otherwise, you are left with a 170 lb rear spring instead of ~250-290 lbs.

Also, to add to Bob's comment, total length of the front endlinks should not exceed 1.25" over OEM. Otherwise you can risk contact with the LCA. Some CO's like H&R and BC do not factor in the initial drop.

@Nliiitend1 I'm trying to decide between the HR CO's anda HR/KOni yellow set up. When I do the setup I plan to also, if not shortly after do a 17x9 +44 255/40 star specs combo and I want to ensure I have enough stiffness to cover body roll and rebound to not rub (fender rolling of course) the only thing pushing me away from the Ht CO's is no dampening, but I know it will be a little stiffer in rebound area.. What are your thoughts?

Some info on lowering your car with stock/stock style struts.

Lowering your car will change the position where the FSB endlink hole is, so you will need to have longer front endlinks. If you don't compensate for your drop, your front sway bar may be pulled up, resulting in it slapping the bottom of your car, giving you a NASTY clunk.

If you have coilovers, the drop is taken into consideration, and the position in which the endlink bolts into the strut moves down. If you have the car higher than the recommended settings, your endlinks will be too long, and you will need shorter ones.

A formula i've seen floating around on the forum is:

New front endlink length = [OEM length] + [change in ride height] - [change in strut endlink mount]
Where your change in ride height (drop) is a positive integer.

Also, with adjustable endlinks, you can only lengthen them so much, as stated by @Design,
