Default Official Suspension Bars and Braces Thread

Suspension bars and braces are speciality items designed for a specific purpose, such as strengthening weak end-links, reducing body roll, correcting the additional negative camber generated when a vehicle is lowered, reducing chassis flex, removing the preload on your sway bar, eliminating speed robbing under-steer, eliminating torque steer, wheel hop and steering slop, etc.

More than half of MSF members have upgraded their suspensions from the following list with nearly half of these choosing the rear sway bar with JBR being the chosen rear sway bar manufacturer nearly three out of four times. The ones following are in decreasing order.

I think Front Strut and Tower Bars belong together. If you disagree or think that others should be grouped together or moved to another group, please say so @Nliiitend1; ). Some products no longer seem to be available. If you disagree and do have a valid link (image, price, availability), please provide this.

Whiteline Rear Sway Bar Adjustable
MS6

MS3

This two hole sway bar improves cornering by allowing trimming of over-steer / understeer to improve handling balance through varying the sway bars ability to resist weight transfer via increasing or decreasing the effective arm length of the sway bars mounting position. If desired you can even set one side at the "hardest" position, thus increasing the force required to make the body roll, and set the other side at the "softest" position to achieve your desired effects. In general, a bigger front sway bar will give the car more understeer where a bigger rear bar will give the car more over-steer, greaseless Polyurethane bushings, three-year warranty

Front Strut / Tower Bars

With the majority of the strut tower being incorporated into the firewall, the argument is raised about whether this bar is needed. If purchased, ensure that it will clear the OEM (especially the Gen1) TMIC or any chosen aftermarket TMIC.

Tanabe Sustec Strut Tower Bar

If the chassis is bending, the suspension system is not being used to its full potential. This bar helps reduce chassis flex, allowing the dampers, springs, and stabilizers to show their true ability. The strut tower bar is arguably one of the least expensive upgrades that can provide a very high degree of benefit that is felt immediately after installing. Often one of the first modifications performed on a vehicle, the strut tower brace improves handling and stability of a vehicle. This one has been very popular due to its low price and high functionality. By connecting the strut towers, and creating a balance, the shocks are prevented from independently moving and causing small changes in suspension geometry.

Megan Racing Rear Toe Adjustable Control Arm

Car alignment is absolutely crucial when modifying your car. Alignment can affect every aspect of your driving experience from straight line stability, under steer, over steer, acceleration, braking and tyre wear. Although stock components allow slight alignments from the stock suspension settings, they often are not able to properly align the car after the suspension has been modified. From the factory, most cars are set to have under steer and for optimum tyre wear at stock height; under steer is often undesired from a performance standpoint and almost all performance driven applications are lowered; These Toe-Control high-strength steel alloy arms allow for fine-tuned adjustments to the rear toe in / out setting of the vehicle. Toe is crucial for the straight line stability and behaviour of a car and is said to have more of an effect than the front toe.

Give me a chance. I have a slow link and have been dropped once already requiring a reload. I seem to be missing the Progress one and have duplicated the Hotchkis, the latter of which I will correct now.

With threads like this it is often asked, “Which is the best?” This is difficult to answer as some consider best quality at any price, personal preference / bragging rights / street cred (popular brand), best value (quality at a good price), popularity (local Nator), cheapest price, etc. Like the Wiki and my other threads, this is just a list in descending Genpu purchased popularity order. I hope that helps.

It may not give you a competitive edge choosing the most popular option, but it should allow you to compete.

Agreed - I'd like to hear about how effective these solutions are for eliminating torque steer, wheel hop and under-steer.

Ah, my bad, it is just after 02:00 here. Local people here must have discovered video streaming, which is causing me to upload late at night.

I thought you were referring to not aligning the image yet, which must have been like watching paint dry...it was so slow.

Correct, I could not find the MS6 Whiteline RSB. If it exists, can you provide the link?

I run Steeda adjustable end links both front and rear. Below are pics, prices and current page links to Steeda's website.

Individual end link components can be sourced from mcmaster-carr or midwest controls (mwc typically has better prices) allowing you to assemble your own custom end links. I found that these parts will mix & match with the Steeda end links also. For example I ordered a set of rod ends from mwc (DWTM-10, $7.11each) that fit perfectly with the ball joint uppers on the rear end links- allowing more angle than the rubber bushings that the Steeda units come with.

It's also worth noting that when using the Whiteline Rear Sway Bar on the Speed6, and the tighter of the two mounting holes, both the sway bar and the lower control arm need to be modified to prevent them hitting each other. The lower corner of the sway bar needs to be removed or it hits the LCA. The LCA itself needs the opening for the end link opened up or the end link will hit. Either/both of these, if not done, will result in both knocking noises as contact is made and will limit the effectiveness of the parts.
@phate; has, I think, some pics of the LCA's with the clearenced opening for the end links? I've done the same but didn't get any pics. It's basically just extending the opening towards the front enough to clear the end link when cycling the suspension.

Oh, and fwiw, yes these are fusion parts. This was the era when ford & mazda were sharing platforms, and the fusion was essentially the same suspension as the 6. Also, looking at the pics above it appears the front ball joint ends have been slightly redesigned since I got mine over a year ago.

Also note that while they show a zerk fitting in the front ball joints in some other pics on the website, they don't actually come with one. Or they didn't use to, at least mine didn't. I called Steeda directly to ask, and they confirmed that none of the units which were boxed & ready to ship had the zerk fittings. They might now, but if that's important to you then you may want to call & ask before ordering...

I don't, but you've described it perfectly.

@Inquisitive;, any front bar made for the regular mazda 6 will fit the speed6. There's a few options out there.

Hey Liceense.

I recently installed a JBR 1.25 Tru-Torsion RSB, and a JBR 88a Duro RMM. These are my only two "suspension" products.

So far, with the 2 items i listed above, the difference in handling as actually quite substantial.

I am currently on a Freektune as well.

The items from stock to aftermarket are night and day i feel. I have a few on-ramps here in my city that do the whole loop to get on the highway. I'm actually able to take that loop alot hard and faster than stock where i felt there was a clear amount of roll, and felt the rear end would kick out. I no longer feel that. Furthermore, the torque steer is greatly reduced as well as it helped stiffen up the engine movement as well as balancing out the rear end to keep it straight and true. The 2 items working together i believe help plant the vehicle, however, it doesn't necessarily assist in prevent a great amount of wheelspin.

The installation of the RSB was incredibly easy. Took me less than 10 minutes with the back end jacked up. There's a total of 6 bolts, 2 u-joints, and the bar itself. The price is also quite nice too. Nothing that breaks the bank in any way, and i do feel it's a very beneficial tool to have installed. I don't have any other brand of RSB to test, but i had a Cobb RMM previously and to be quite honest, the Cobb RMM feels like stock, which is pretty awful. The JBR 88a duro, lots of people say that they can't even hold a conversation in the car because it's so shakey. Since having it in, before it's even gotten more than 100km on it, the car has little vibration. You can absolutely hold a conversation, but it's in no way uncomfortable in any sense of the word. If you had the RMM installed, you'd never even complain. However, you can definitely feel the mount strengthens the hold on the engine.

Thanks, I didn’t know that, which could add quite a bit, I think. @Raider; asked me to include MS6s and Genwons, but I’m really out of my depths here.

Thanks – definitely and get the correct images attached… lol, I had no idea of the volume when I started this project. When it came time to post, I easily confused myself with the image names. I am QAing each link now, but appreciate any help, including categorising.

@Inquisitive; The pic you're using currently for the Steeda rear Adj. End Link is the one I posted to compare the Steeda adjustable with the RacingBeat unit. Probably should switch that for the actual Steeda product image to avoid confusion.

Speaking of, here's the data for the RacingBeat units:

Thread starter asked me to put up some answers to questions he asked. Hope it helps.

1- Live up to the hype (corrected wheel hop, torque steer, under-steer);
The parts I have are only a corksport rear sway bar and rear chassis brace. Wheel hop is not going to go away, just have to deal with it, I think torque steer can be reduced by using heavier motor mounts all around, the rear mount just helps deal with engine lash from the torque our cars put down. When I corner hard in my car now with the bar and the brace in the rear the back end of the car seems to come around a little more willingly. I even seem to get some lift off oversteer which is pretty cool.
2- Have any negative comments (poor quality);
Fortunately no, no complaints about quality, the parts have been rock solid.
3- Installation (time required, pain);
The rear chassis brace required me to cut into the rear paneling, and cuts down on cargo room but it can be removed quite easily. The rear sway bar was easy to put in, but i recommend getting a buddy to help, the bar is very heavy if your holding it up alone for extended periods of time.
4- Offer good value (too expensive); and
I would say yes, i am going to get a good set of tires on the car next to help and see what the results will be, i kind of trashed mine this past summer
5- Would you rather have chosen an alternative?
No, I am happy with my purchase

1 live up to the hype (corrected wheel hop, torque steer, under-steer);
Right now I have a mix of JBR/Tanabe braces/bars on my car. I would have to say everything has done exactly what it promises. JBR products have always been awesome hence why I went with the RSB. As for my Tanabe products I heard good things about them but not a lot of Speed owners used them so I gave them a try.

2 have any negative comments (poor quality); Both companies make great products. 100% satisfied customer here.

3 installation (time required, pain); All the Tanabe bars/braces took less than 15 mins to install. JBR RSB took a little longer but it was because I has to fix a problem with the screws. Took about 30 mins for RSB.

4 offer good value (too expensive); All the parts are pretty much you get what you pay for. Now I found the Tanabe parts were a little cheaper than others but they are still great. JBR is JBR; enough said.

5 would you rather have chosen an alternative?
Not really I mean JBR has done great things for the Mazda community and they make high quality product. As for Tanabe they have been around the import tuner scene for a really long time so the have history/reputation to back them. Overall i think these are 2 great companies to buy from with 0 buyers remorse.

1 live up to the hype (corrected wheel hop, torque steer, under-steer);

I had significant wheelhop on the stock suspension, but that might have been due to my broken stock PMM...... It got significantly better once I replaced it with the JBR 70.

I have the GB Ground Control Coilover conversion kit. It's a really great piece. The springs are very stiff though (525/600). Once I swapped to slightly softer springs I got the best of both worlds. Wheelhop is completely gone.

Swaybars have been a pain. My JBR bar likes to knock against the bottom of the car because it has been swapped and greased so many times. Some of that is due to my own ignorance, but I'm not sold on the bar design. If I were to do it all over again, I'd get the less stiff (and less bulky) CS bar.

2 have any negative comments (poor quality)

Good quality, winter just sucks. Can't blame that on JBR.
3 installation (time required, pain);

The coilover install wasn't terrible. Shaving the paint is expected. I wish the rears were adjustable while they were on the car though.

4 offer good value (too expensive);

The GC Coilovers are definitely worth the price. Just make sure you pick the DD setup as the Aggressive coils are incredibly stiff.

5 would you rather have chosen an alternative?

I probably would have selected a smooth bar rather than the bulky JBR, just because clearance is super low down there.

I have the Corksport RSB and it made a very noticeable difference in the corners. Installation was a breeze with another set of hands. I have yet to run into any problems with it. I also put it on the stiffest setting when I installed it.

I purchased a JBR .125 RSB with his beefy billet brackets

1. The bar feels like it has helped with under-steer. My car is my DD, so I only go out to the canyon roads in Southern California once in a while, so my memory of how the stock RSB felt may be a bit fuzzy.
2. The bar and brackets are a bit bulky. It made things interesting while installing everything, but not really difficult.
3. I took about 20 minutes to install the RSB. Tightening the end-links was a pain, but that's to be expected with any RSB install.
4.Overall, I thought it was a good value. The bar has been solid and I haven't had any issues
5. At the time of purchase, CS had not revised their RSB brackets, so I went this route. If I were to choose today, I probably would have gone with the CS RSB, but I don't regret my choice at all. I bolted the thing in and set it on the stiffest setting and wouldn't really change anything.

Unless someone has bench tested the bars, that is all based on torsion and bending equations. Just meaning there will likely be some differences and you can't totally rely on those figures because the bar's shape doesn't perfectly fit those equation's assumptions.

That seems especially true of bars with multiple bends, like the rear bar on an MS6. The typical %stiffness increase in bar stiffness from diameter change wasn't even close.

This is my suspension set up on my car:
Corksport Springs
Corksport Front lower arm bar
Corksport Mid Chassis brace
JBarone RSB (the first ones that he made) w/stock endlinks.
And a Tanabe front strut tower bar.

Everything that I installed on the car made an improvement, except for the Front strut tower bar. It was a waste of money.
Don't have any torque steer to speak of, but that's because I have JBarone mounts at all 3 points, and those eliminated it (I had 'em on the car before I completed the suspension mods).
Hope this helps you all. Any questions, feel free to PM me or ask me here.

Thanks, but isn't that just 14% stiffer? I don't expect the dimensions to add double the stiffness, but comparing bars and numbers with adjustment options is a cluster of confusion with nothing straightforward. What I really don't understand is the Hotchkis numbers if the JBR numbers are correct., and back to a similar, but narrower CS bar.

Exactly what I was going to say. Corksport website says "Two endlink attachment points to change the stiffness between 114% stiffer than stock, or 180% stiffer. " The numbers you just gave @Spencer@CorkSport; would indicate it is either 14% (or 80%) stiffer, or to put it another way 114/180% of the stock stiffness.

Can the Hotchkis numbers be explained?

95% stiffer...1625lbs/in?

The lbs/in would indicate 300%, if the 479lbs/in for stock as stated by JBR is accurate. JBR indicates the rate is at 1" of travel, but that still doesn't explain the Hotchkis number completely.

probably a matter of the fact that each company ran tests themselves using whichever method they wanted. so comparing company to company is comparing apples to oranges.

as said earlier, you'd need a single test done on all bars at once to get an honest quantifiable comparison. you should get on that.

It's well established in other threads that you can't compare stiffness values across testing methods. You also can't really compare test values vs. calculated values. If everyone testing a bar also tested a stock bar, and gives their test values for both, you may be able to calculate % over stock for each and have a useful comparison. If everyone gives their stiffness in percentage of stock, and don't make mistakes like "20% vs. 120% stiffer" as we were discussing, and they actually tested a stock bar vs. their own, we again might be able to make comparisons.

Thanks much for this info. Informative and concise.

Not necessarily the most sought after item in the list but thought I'd add that Corksport does make a skid plate for both Speed 3s. I believe completely identical to each other.

Yeah, It shouldn't be up to customers when companies are making claims based on unspecified testing methods. I don't care how many different ways exist, but when there's numbers and percentages being used to sell something, it should be explained for meaning.

Thanks, I have added the CS MS3 Gen1 Skid Plate as well.

@Spencer@CorkSport; Have you discontinued the CorkSport Lower Front Brace / Front Lower Arm Brace and / or importing the Autoexe Front Lower Arm Brace?

You're welcome to use the pic to compare Steeda to RacingBeat! Not a problem!

And, THANK YOU for the effort & time you're putting into this, I hadn't realized this is one of the larger, if not the largest, category of parts available for the speeds.

It's not up to companies to make sure their competition is using the same methods to make their claims, either. You need to figure out what you think will work best for your requirements. This is part of modding.

That said, what calculations/datalogging have you run on your current suspension that makes you believe a 15-20% difference in RSB stiffness is going to drastically impact the capability of one bar over another for your needs?

tl;dr
Buy the one you think is the prettiest. You probably aren't going to be able to tell the difference on your commute.

JBR's description of rate makes no fucking sense at all.

They do make sense if you do the calculations for the bar, but it is the bar's rate, at the end link hole, holding 1 side static. Since there is a motion ratio involved, it will reduce the bar's effectiveness, and in roll you get deflection on both sides of the bar...

If you want to relate it to body roll, it is most common to express the resistance to roll in terms of lb-in/1° body roll, where it takes motion ratio and track width into account. Otherwise, just the bench rate is great, none of this "lb/in/in body roll".

I doubt many companies bench test their bars. I know Whiteline does not, they told me that on the phone.

Most of the time, you can get a good idea of how much stiffer a simple bar is by looking at the change in diameter. Whiteline has a pretty decent chart showing this, here:

If you are changing from solid to hollow, or vice versa, this chart doesn't apply. Like I said, though, it's not 100% accurate anyway. Just a decent means of estimating % change.

Same shape, design, and materials specs? lol, you know that's where they'll all start to diverge even if they are the same.

Whiteline's sway bar is solid, right? All the others are hollow and a couple at 32mm.

How do the attachment points get considered in that chart?

Wish these companies could be trusted to be accurate, and more forthcoming. It's not a big ask, but apparently "that's just part of modding" like that knucklehead poster above said. What a maroon.

They don't, but that bar stiffness % increase directly correlates to the same % increase in roll stiffness from the bar.
